The HDR of the 7 has improved a lot. The sky is much more visible. Also stabilization makes quite a big difference and in general sharpness and color has improved. Think the price is too high though.

There were some instances where the slightly wider angle of the 5 was the difference between getting a shot or having my head clipped off, but those were pretty rare.

did you grade them differently? :( Looks like you graded the 5, then for the 7, you used the inbuilt grading.. Makes it an unfair comparison. The color straight out of the 7 is too saturated/contrasty. A fair comparison would have been to make them both flat/neutral, then grade them thesame. Now i would love to see that comparison.

Good video I brought my GoPro 5 less than a year ago for £299 and now we are on the latest GoPro 7 what number GoPro will we be on this time next year? Was thinking of upgrading my 5 to a 7 hence watching this video I’ll stick with the 5 for now which is still very impressive. Off subject I brought a used dji osmo gimbal with built in 4K camera from cex for £120 this is a fantastic companion along side my GoPro 5 for now

But yeah off topic! I realised the hero 7 was much clearer, after purchasing I had done some research and people were saying go pro 7 was rubbish, you showed both of them which really helped me finalise my initial decision. full disclosure, the color settings were the color settings that i usually used with each device. with the 5, i always used a flat color profile, as the gopro color on the 5 was always too saturated and off. with the 7, i did use the gopro color profile, which i think has much improved

Thanks for your effort in doing this comparison. Just got Hero 5 Black on a good sale price on Black Friday and am essentially a novice with go pro. As learning curve diminishes may simply jump to Hero 7 vs expense of a gimbal etc etc. let alone the clear colour contrast witnessed in your footage.
Making this comparison in 2021!!! Just ordered the 7... I don't understand why its so much cheaper than the 5... There's literally no comparison. The 7 blows it away. Getting this to mount on my motorcycle helmet so definitely need the stabilization.
Currently using the 5 Black, but the stability difference is amazing! Def looking at getting the 7. Colors are brighter, too. Took my 5 scuba diving in Cozumel, worked well, but I think the 7 will be even better.
I bought the 6 because it had a zoom feature, but I didn’t like that it only worked in certain modes and you had to stop recording to zoom. So I sent it back and kept my 5.
Very good comparison! 3:15, 3:38, 7:02, and 7:34 were my favorite parts! Really shows how much better the color on the 7 is compared to the 5. It's day and night
good eye. it's the blues. the blues are so right on now. (and while the blues can be fixed to a large degree in post, i'm a little colorblind, and fixing color in post is always a quagmire)
Anyone have experience with the Hero 7 in cold weather? I've heard it kills the batteries on the 7.. I have the 5 and it performs amazing in below zero weather
cold kills all batteries. i run all winter long. gopro hero3+ black, 5, 7, 8, iphone, insta360 one x - they all are susceptible to cold. it "kills" that battery but the battery life comes back if you can take out the battery and warm them up (like in your glove, for example).

Have you tried either of these with low light, such as, filming night sky or northern lights? I'm looking at bringing the 5 to Iceland in January but I'm on the fence.
I film in near darkness regularly. I detest them both. I prefer iPhone to GoPro for low light / no light conditions. Although my favorite of my cameras for low light would be my Sony a6300. But it's too big and not stabilized enough to use while running.
Hero 7's color is substantially better! I still use the 5 but am concerned about buying the 7 at the moment because I'm afraid the 8 will be out in a few months... and HOPING they might improve more on the audio.
i believe gopro has its own video editing software that it gives away for free. imovie is also free if you have a mac. for mac, i prefer final cut pro for windows, i edit on premiere pro
There’s such a massive difference colour wise, everything is much more sharper, with more true colours in the 7 so it’s a massive upgrade. I’m a little sad that I on,y recently got the 6 so can’t justify the upgrade atm.. maybe in the new year!
The vibrancy and contrast on the 7 is a lot better than the 5, but that's nothing you can't do yourself in post. The audio though, is wayyy better on the 7! I think that's the biggest selling point thus far.
Is there a reason why the hero 7 footage always seems more zoomed in? I know the stabilization crop is supposed to be ~10% but wasn't stabilization activated on both cameras? Does the hero 7 have increased stability because it crops a larger percentage of the footage? 🤔
It's not so much that it crops more, but you lose some overall image whenever you apply any stabilization. And it's a positive correlation. The more stabilized, the more cropped. I also think that the hero 7 lens is also a bit tighter.
After you film in 4k or 1080 @ 60fps, is there a restriction or edit that must be done on an imac before it can be uploaded to youtube. (is the 4k too big of a file for uploading to youtube..?) . Question coming from a novice.. :) . thanks great video.
No. TH-cam can handle it. There is some processing that happens on their end that effects final quality, but those resolutions and frame rates are supported
I found this video so I could try to decide to buy an old used 5 or just go for the new 7. I've never used a GoPro so I don't know how you set them up etc, but the comparison is hard to make sense of. People are saying the 7 looks better because there is more sky detail etc, but the exposure seems to be quite a bit lower on the 7. (almost too dark in some cases.) That doesn't necessarily mean there is more detail. I'm not sure if there is a way to adjust the exposure or if its just autoexposure.
Just a heads up. Because you ran without stabalizer on 5 and held them side by side instead of stacked. Really hard to see difference besides the audio quality. When i say hard i mean too many factors to say if its the versions or your setup. I will say besides that really good video. Thank you for the info it did help me decide to get the 7 from the audio alone. From an editor perspective a little too long on the slo mo shots. And maybe some transition shots of panoramas or scenic

Problem is it is only noticeable if you have a side by side shot. Otherwise one would never know.

still like my 5s for stationary shots. I just cant rely on my 7s not to overheat. the 5s just dont do that. ill take footage over no footage any day
a lot of my footage is shot at around 32F. overheating is never my problem.

I know this is an old clip Kafuzi but was the file size an issue? The card fills up crazy fast on 1080/60. 120fps or 4K must be huge files?

I've never used a GoPro so I don't know how you set them up etc, but the comparison is hard to make sense of. People are saying the 7 looks better because there is more sky detail etc, but the exposure seems to be quite a bit lower on the 7. (almost too dark in some cases.) That doesn't necessarily mean there is more detail. I'm not sure if there is a way to adjust the exposure or if its just autoexposure.
Or on the contrary, the 5 just seems overexposed and more blown out.
You can set a minimum shutter speed, I believe. But I think you should go by what you think looks better.

Just a heads up. Because you ran without stabalizer on 5 and held them side by side instead of stacked. Really hard to see difference besides the audio quality. When i say hard i mean too many factors to say if its the versions or your setup. I will say besides that really good video. Thank you for the info it did help me decide to get the 7 from the audio alone. From an editor perspective a little too long on the slo mo shots. And maybe some transition shots of panoramas or scenic
