The Trans-Atlantic slave trade is well-known in the West, but there was another slave trade that was far more destructive in duration and severity. This was the Arab Slave Trade.
In Pre-Islamic Arabia, slavery was well-established before the advent of Islam in the 7th century. The people were connected to intercontinental trade routes that afforded them large numbers of foreign slaves - some European, but mostly "Abash" or "Abyssinian". This resulted in large influxes of captives from around the world - Greeks, Turks, Syrians, Indians, Berbers, Persians, Copts, and Nubians.
First Arab Muslims looked to eastern and central Europe for white slaves to bring to the Middle East. But the growing military power of Europe made it difficult to expand, and resulted in a shortage of slaves. This was when Arab Muslims started looking to Africa for slaves. The Arab Slave Trade occurred across Africa, from East to West.
