Here is how to hook up a simple Sink & Grey water drain for a kitchen set-up in an off grid cabin. Very basic and effective and easy to do yourself. Dave Whipple
Believe it or not, my grandparents in the Sandhills of Nebraska had a system just like this... not only for the kitchen sink, but also one for the bathtub. My grandmother watered her gardens with the grey water...she didn't waste a drop. They also had an outhouse... fun times in the middle of the night! Wasn't fun when it came time to dig new holes... seems it always happened when we were visiting... "oh boys... need ya to do something". :) A great DIY video Dave... thanks!
Just a note, if you plan to do a gray water drain, check your local code. Where I am, gray water has to be released below ground level. Which is as easy as digging a hole, putting in some pea gravel, and then piping into the pea gravel and covering with some dirt. Great video Dave!
Have to go pretty deep in order to get below the frost line or it would back freeze. I guess it depends on how much you're going to use it. Seems like they usually go south for the winter. A P-trap is another thing that would freeze if you're gone for a few days. Sometimes simple is the better way to go. Freezing pipes is the biggest problem with my dad's cabin. Everytime you want to leave, you have to blow out the pipes. I'm still at the five gallon bucket stage in my off grid cabin but this looks like a better way to go. Yeah no codes where I live either.
@@DK-jd8bj another option is to pour RV antifreeze down the drains to fill the p-traps if you don't have a compressor but it can get expensive depending how many drains you have.
Dave, it's great to see you back in Alaska. You have overcome a lot of challenges to make it back this year. I live with a similar grey-water system. A P-trap is invaluable for keeping the tiny flying critters (like our state bird) from buzzing up the pipe and out your sink. Even with fine mesh screening over the exit pipe, they still manage to get in there. It also keeps the gasses from flowing back up the pipe from all the sludge that forms inside the pipe over time. Stay radical, eh!
I love your cabin videos!!! Well all of them actually. I love to see the world as your travel to Alaska, I love to see how you build and do everything there! Keep the videos coming as you can!
Another great vid glad you made it, with your perfectly serviceable car with the new motor in it and now new windshield. I had a drain just like that in the Alaskan cabin on my son's place in Kenny Lake. Can't wait to get back up there. My wife says I'll need to install electric and running water if I want her to go with me.
I found a video of you driving to Alaska. I drove from Wisconsin to Alaska in the '80s and I just did it in the last year, but I went to Alberta First. Good videos. Wish I could stay up there. Lucky Man, you are.
Dave you are exactly like my uncle Joe and Uncle Joe was a jack of all trades and he could do carpentry welding mechanic job and electric job and plumbing and his day job was a Boiler Engineer that could keep the boilers running without a trip! I got Uncle Joes job after he retired and he was the best and smartest guy in The HOUSE! So I gave you a compliment like no other DAVID!
@@Bushradical From food particl es, grease/fat from dishes, dirt, hair etc. I know this from experience. There are pretty simple design set ups out there that you can build yourself.
Cabin's looking great, sir! Nice, simple grey water drain ... and nice t-shirt! Thanks for another "look over your shoulder" as you craft your Northwoods home :) God Bless
You always do a great job of showing the details step by step. A natural teacher. May I suggest that you add an extension to get water further from the cabin, keeps mosquitoes and odor down. Also puts it to good use by directing it to plants and trees, flowers etc. One year in. drought I had a hose attached to my washer (.using environmentally friendly soap) and used the water to save some of the trees and bushes. Loved getting that double benefit. So worth the effort.
Boss of the swamp had a great video on adding covered gravel pit to prevent smells from greasy water and bit of food over time. I copied it for my cabin (also off grub) and it works a treat. Plus it was simple.
I'll put a pit in for the shower house and probably the cabin but its got to wait its turn on the list...But I needed the sink right now. I'll check out that video. Thanks
Nice fix Dave. We did that to our houses in Vt as not to stress the septic more than necessary. The showers also had the same type of drain. Everything but the pooper. We put a screen on the end though, to keep the bugs out.
You have a great voice , I hope you make more videos on your adventures in Alaska, vs your how to videos. I really enjoyed your road trip video when you drove up to Alaska.
I'd like to be your next door neighbor, there in Alaska, Dave! Great videos, I'm really enjoying them and the simple ways you go about things. Low key, no stress, no mess. Very therapeutic and relaxing. I do dream of owning a cabin in Alaska, some day. Would love to do some gold prospecting up there and a lot of fishing. )))
@@Bushradical Hey Man! I just watched you build and take your well deserved shower. You've got really good carpentry skills Dave. I learned it from my grandfathers and dad, as well. When I win the lottery, I'm gonna join you up there. My wife, two sons and I, live in Clayton, NC. I hope to get the opportunity to meet you and your family some day. I think we would enjoy some "Off Grid" livin for a spell. I need to get my sons away from video games, for sure. I really enjoy your videos, my friend. Keep em coming. (I subscribed)
Dave I just bought some wooded land and have ordered a shed to use as a cabin. It’s finished to the studs so the rest is up to me. After watching this and another video of yours I’m confidant I can learn a lot from your experiences. Thanks for taking the time to produce these videos. Btw... the 5 gallon bucket idea works for me. I want to find the video where you install the wood stove.
I remember a grey water drain we had in the late 1960's that dumped out into our horse field. We didn't use any sort of eco friendly soap, but that was always the greenest spot on the property. And usually there were a few tomato plants there from seeds that got washed down the drain.
We have one at the farmhouse in Michigan that the kitchen sink drains into and it daylights out in the yard.....and yes we have tomato plants growing there too!
Tomatoes are prolific. I once saw large rows of sanitized solid human waste outside of a sewage treatment plant. In the rows were lots of very healthy looking tomato plants growing. The seeds survive digestion and sewage treatment.
Quick recommendation bro, seal the gap where that line runs out of the cabin through the wood from both sides if possible. Can't believe the cabin has come so far! Y'all are amazing.
I think I would add some pipe to move the water farther down the hill. Maybe another elbow going down to the ground and some 4” drain cover the end with some big rocks .

Awesome Dave! That was what we had in Arizona for the washing machine! We were totally amazed it was legal. Best thing was drying clothes on the line. When my Gram came to visit she said by the time she got the clothes hung they were dry! LOL some different from here in Maine...
Thanks Dave. I'll be doing one of these for sure. What about getting water into the house? I'm thinking of maybe a texas tank or something. I need to figure out a way that the water won't freeze. I'll keep looking at ideas but this one is great and easy to implement. My other thing is what to do for a foundation. I'm in zone 4 in maine and wondering if I could do concrete piers on something around 24 x 32. Maybe a bit smaller.
Consider putting an access plate in, so that when something goes amiss you can get through that insulated floor to get at 90° connection without a fuss. Nice cabin. Best

Absolutely.
Great video! I have been looking forward to seeing the Alaska cabin episodes!
Lots more to come
Fixing to start my cabin on the kenai. Great idea. Never thought of not needing a p trap
You need a p trap for sewer gas...but this kind of drain doesn't go into a septic tank or sewer
Nicely done. Cabin is really looking good!
