I always wondered how these are used and what they're called. I can't help feeling their design leaves something to be desired if this is their sole intended use. I can, however, imagine other situations where there use might be beneficial but their existence still would be hard to justify.

They are also used to attach wooden boards to a metal or concrete frame of a bench. Gives a nice smooth surface with the rounded heads.
