Rob, thank you SO much for these videos. I listened to your previous lecture (Emerson & Thoreau) and that helped me understand their writings much more. I am excited to have found this incredible resource! I really wish I had found your lectures at the beginning of my class.

Whitman may always remain somewhat controversial. Dickinson never will be. She wrote a number of magnificent and memorable poems.

It always bugged me in my school English classes that Whitman and Dickinson were taught together. Dickinson is the best poet the US ever produced and in the top 5 of the poets in the English language. She transcended the Romantic era in which she lived and wrote and could be the first "modern" poet. Whitman is just a boring windbag. What he did WAS different for the time. It just wasn't good.

I tried my whole life to stop being biased against the southern accent. I have not succeeded yet. Still can't stand it, and find it hard to trust the speaker who uses it.

"I could pee, I don't need to but I could".
Do know what my statement there and your comment have in common? Both serve no purpose in being stated, not even as a point of conversation and both are kind of one of those things that is best Kept to oneself.

Well, he does teach at a backwater called East Tennessee State University which is probably the equivalent of "13th grade".

I long for the day when people will stop lumping Em together with that mediocre hack

+Trevor LeLacheur I could be missing something, but I just think Dickinson's far smarter

I can respect that. For a long time Emily Dickinson was my favorite poet. I even have a robin tattoo because of her, but I really admire Walt Whitman too. I think they're grouped together to show contrast more than anything else, as their work could not be more different.

they do contrast, but I think people also compare the two because they share 'originality'
even in that regards I think she has it over him
her poems APPEAR less original to the casual reader since she formats them in the same hymn meter repetitively
the actual content is layered with meaning

people are usually dismissive of things they don't understand, so I concede he may be over my head

    A dreary dumb lecture.
