Victorinox Climber - Urban EDC with Fantastic Scissors

  • The Victorinox Climber is a great swiss army knife that would be perfect for someone looking for a serious EDC, urbanized multi-tool.
    What I love most about this tool are obviously the awesome camoflauge scales, perfect knife, and scissors. One disadvantage is the lack of a saw vs the Victorinox Huntsman.
    But if you're spending most of your time in the city, this might be the perfect EDC for you.

    The climber is my favourite EDC for the city. It's really just the Spartan with scissors and the hook included. It's great for European vacations too. The knives are handy for cutting food, opening things etc, Scissors are always great to have handy. The corkscrew and bottle opener are a must in Europe for your store bought wine and beer :-) The can opener can also get use. The awl is useful when you gain weight from stuffing yourself with sausages and cheese fondues and you need to drill a new hole in your belt :-))) I don't usually need pliers, files and handyman type tools when on vacation so the climber has pretty well everything I would use. The little eyeglass screwdrivers which are stored on the corkscrew are a handy add-on though if you wear glasses like I do .

    I bought a red climber about 25 years ago (before they put the hook on it) and have decided to put on a set of camo scales (from eBay) to give it “a new lease on life”.

    one thing about using a camo color knife in the outdoors is... if u drop it somewere... u ain't gonna find it without a bit of sniffer dogs help.

      That's my reason for not buying a camouflage print knife, but I have friends are loved ones who like it, so in the process of buying one for them, it looks like I am going to buy one for myself as well.

      Paradoxically they're ok for urban EDC, if you like camo by virtue of it's style. If you were out in the boondocks better to have red scales.

    I had a big Hercules for years and I just love it, because it has pliers, scissors and the wood saw but I also bought a Climber model in camouflage just like that. Like you, I am also partial with camou. The Climber looked so cute in camouflage. The scissors, the hook and the corkscrew are I think useful to me too. Excellent video dude! Thank you.

    The hook I've turned into a sharp pull blade by filing the inside of the hook, great for opening things with string attached plus bootlaces in an emergency !

  • @johnmoreno417
    @johnmoreno417 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've used the hook to remove circlips, pull string or wire thru holes, as a handle as stated and a general purpose snagger. I've always liked having it available.

  • @wb5mgr
    @wb5mgr 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    FYI, the multipurpose hook may just have more uses than any tool on the knife other than the two knife blades. It can be as you mentioned used for lifting hot bails off cook fires, carrying parcels tied in cordage, tightening knots or also untying them, stretching a line or bungee cord or a tarp edge taught, it pretty much can be used to join the knife to anything as an impromptu handle with a lashing. The list goes on...
    All this aside, were I a climber, I'd really miss the addition of a wood saw to cut branches and prep kindling and a metal file to repair equipment. Therefore I'd eye the ranger model even with the extra thickness which most folks overstate. I've carried all sizes of SAK's for years and I never notice them in my pocket not even my 111mm trekker. The big swisschamp and cybertool 41 are pushing the edge of the envelope but that's why they make sheaths.

    I have used a Climber for EDC the past year, to carve wood and it has seen some use that is probably a bit too hard for what it is, but, it held up.
    The tool is still solid but some tools don't open as "smoothly" anymore even after cleaning and lubricating. I can't complain though since their function is still exactly the same and they still work just as good.
    A great tool for a great price, I am happy. Very capable and it makes you realize that a lock on a knife really isn't needed for most EDC situations. (Well, to me at least.)

    • @StartUpSurvival
      @StartUpSurvival  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bas van der Meij (Ykai63) Completely agree about the lock. With Victorinoxes it's easy to find an upper limit for how hard you can use them. However, for light duty random tasks, accept no substitute!

    Knives, flashlights, and lighters should never be camo. At least not if you need to find them after you drop them. I have learned that the hard way LOL!!!

    Have you ever tried to carry a 2 gallon bucket with wire handle, i have and wish that i had a victorinox with universal hock so my hand not had been sore for an hour after. How about open one of those cans with pull tabs, sometime they can be a pain to oben to, just use the hook.

  • @NeilTheKnifeGuy
    @NeilTheKnifeGuy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Victorinox has a One Hand Trekker in camo. I think it has a main blade a saw , can opener , bottle opener, reamer , and not sure if it has a cork screw or a screwdriver but one or the other. Nice collection of SAK'S and great video.

  • @David_Downs
    @David_Downs 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    the hook was designed to be used to be a parcel carrier, mainly newspapers with those sharp plastic ties around it, you can use the hook to carry them without hurting your hand or cutting it.

    • @StartUpSurvival
      @StartUpSurvival  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I find it to be a pretty useless feature honestly. I know there's a time and a place, but that's like a one in a million thing for me.

    • @todome1
      @todome1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep and that's a fair response. I had a friend who use to use his to gut birds while hunting dove and quail in the field. I actually have no use for this tool on my Climber right now either. I can carry all the packages I order just fine. I'm a retired UPS driver lol. Kind of a bitch to get it open but at least it's there if you need it for some odd task..

  • @ShoeManReview

    I saw a documentary about Victorinox and the Parcel hook was a tool incorporated into the knife way back near 100 years ago when it was more useful for carrying stuff that was held together with string or twine.

    The martensitic stainless steel alloy used for the cutting blades is optimized for high toughness and corrosion resistance and has a composition of 15% chromium, 0.60% silicon, 0.52% carbon, 0.50% molybdenum, and 0.45% manganese and is designated X55CrMo14 or DIN 1.4110 according to Victorinox.

    so nice to see that in a hi tech world of gimmiks and inivations, that some people can still appreciate the merits of the SAK.i love them, have probably close to 30 of them. I actually have a classic in a real tree camo. My climber is the glow in the dark yellow one. In days gone by parcells were wrapped with a hemp type cordage around all four sides of the box. that hook woud be used to grab where the strings cross allowing you to carry a heavier package without the string biteing into you. This made sense for soldiers receiving care packages and may have been handy at one point and is thus called a "parcel hook". I think Can Tire has the trekker in camo, not one handed though. Nice vid man, love SAK vids. Do you know the roach clip conversion for the huntsman? lol

    • @StartUpSurvival
      @StartUpSurvival  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      RealBushMonkey hahaha roach clip conversion. That is such a BC thing to say lol. Totally on the same page. They also make great gifts. I've received a few in my life, and probably given away 5-10 as gifts to others.

    • @RealBushMonkey
      @RealBushMonkey 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      can tire had the recruit model for 6 bucks clearance. i got 9 and gave them all away. the roach clip trick could be implimented in other ways to i suppose. so glad warriors is stocking them now. I have a spartan from when i was a kid, carried for many years. It actually has faded to a chalky pink, the sides of the cork screw are worn flat from so much in and out of pocket.Its pretty beat up...what a gem! probably got it a bit over 30yrs ago and still works fine

    50th like 😎 Anyway, awesome review, gorgeous knives. I got the classic red Climber when I was 10 and I absolutely loved it. I got it for my birthday while I was on holiday near the woods in France so I could instantly use it to like 'survival' a bit. It had such a nostalgic value for me. But I lost it after a couple of years.. I am now 16 and yesterday, I bought a new one. It feels like I never lost it. Victorinox knives are just awesome.

      +Rikth Dcruze Either one is a good choice, but I wouldn't really think they're comparable. Classic is tiny. I carry one on my keychain, and I end up using it a fair bit. Mostly scissors. With full sized SAK's I find I'm unable to carry it exclusively. I really like having a locking blade on me. Amazingly useful though overall.
