Custom bright or shimmery neon lamp. Your choice.

  • This turned out really well. It's based on a standard clear-dome LED lamp kit from eBay, but instead of using the supplied PCB and circuitry I designed a new PCB designed to take 9 neon indicator lamps and suitable resistors.
With just the neons and resistors it makes a large neon glow lamp. But when further current limiting is introduced in either the form of a resistor or series X2 (suppression) capacitor of around 47nF or more depending on the number of neons, it makes the glow in the lamps unstable. This results in each lamp shimmering slightly as the glow moves about on the surface of the electrodes. The choice of series resistor or capacitor depends on how many neons there are in the circuit. If the current is limited too much some neons may not light.
In this instance I used nine neon lamps, each with a 220K resistor, and then added two more 220K resistors in parallel (110K total) as a main current limiting resistor to them all. If making a large array the common series resistor may get hot, so a capacitor may be preferred. If using one then I recommend adding a 1Mohm resistor across the capacitor to discharge it when the lamp is removed from the holder.
The music in the background at the beginning of the video was Blackout by Avenza.

The resistors and capacitors were arranged to look like the logs in a fireplace, with the NE-2's as the flames. Spray-painted the 'logs' brown, and installed in a dollhouse for a perfect little effect!

In regards to work hours: In the U.S., labor laws are split between the Federal and State governments. Where I live (Ohio), there is literally no end to how many hours or days a company can require one to be present or at least available to work. I am currently laid off from a company that had a work schedule set for 3 days at 12 hours and 1 day at 6 hours. Overtime (time after 40 hours) was 1.5 times the regular rate, so one could work 4 days and have three off, and still acquire 2 hours of overtime pay. Excluding the inept management, I found it to be a nice way of providing a steady income (and here in the U.S. covering health insurance costs) as well as allowing for ample time to pursue other interests. Wonderful project, btw. I am ordering some of these bulbs today.

If the camera had separate shutter and aperture controls, it might be possible (though the flicker is probably a multiple of 25 and Clive is recording the video at 30 fps - actually TH-cam says 29, but I'm guessing that's either 29.99 being calculated dynamically, or set to exactly 29.97 for NTSC compatibility). Just switching the recording to 25 fps might make the flickering less annoying.

Regarding your comments about record labels, I definitely agree. Music labels used to be significant and also had high quality standards. This was down to the fact that music production was prohibitively expensive and a label would only want to sign you if they felt they'd make a decent return. Now, it's possible to record music from your bedroom and still find an audience. So, signing up to a label doesn't seem very sensible these days, as they're just in it for the cash grab and less about making you a star - as they'll make money whether you are good or shit, because the costs are next to nothing these days. Unfortunately, there's now such a saturation of artists that I actually find it very hard to find something new *and* unique. I agree that there definitely is good music out there, but it is harder to find I think. :)

I’m a part of the furry fandom, and among furries there are a lot of musicians who make some absolutely outstanding music. It’s gotten so I hardly ever listen to commercially produced music any more. When I buy CDs, it’s the artists themselves who made, packaged, and shipped them.

I do the same thing with solder! I use a larger spool that i put a little clip on the edge of the irons cable coming out of the solder station so i can just pull it through where you squeeze the clip and i have solder sticking out i can touch with the iron only one handed, to freshen up the tip or use it to tin wires or other tiny things that i put flux onto then just touch the tinned iron tip to. i cut pieces off my larger spool so i can hold them to solder, and the little piece left over i always do the same thing, just touch it to the tip and it draws itself right onto it, your first person ive seen mention or do that..It would be awesome to see more creations of your own, have you ever thought about doing R/C projects like quadcopters or rc cars? i bet you would enjoy all the electronics stuff going on in the fpv community, also great people.

You could also make a large set of neon relaxation oscillators, using pretty much the same layout, just add a 1N4007 diode on the input, a 220n 400V capacitor as smoothing, and then use 470k resistors to the lamps, and a 100n ceramic across each neon, to make a large set of flashers. In the dark you will find they all eventually flash in near synchronisation, as the first to trigger will photoelectrically trigger the rest.
Solder I always use a tube to hold it, typically an old tube from dissolving tablets, as you can get around 50m of solder into there winding it up around a pencil, and poking a small hole in the top after removing the desiccant pack. Lasts a long time, plus you do not get it all tangled up, and it stores easily in a tool case. Plus you can have a few tubes with different thickness solders, for fine, not so fine and pretty near plumbing size solder. Does not stain the fingers as well with frequent use, so less yummy sweet lead acetate if you are eating chips with your solder.

A technique I learnt from an old textbook was to bend the legs of the neons (or other components) outwards so they staple themselves in, and that makes soldering a lot easier.
Not sure how applicable it is though, considering it might lead to potential bridging.

    • @bdf2718
      @bdf2718 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The problem is that it makes them a bugger to get out without damaging the lands. Or the components, if you want to salvage them for another project. Cheap chinesium stuff may do it, but decend builds avoid doing it.
Best way is a shim (bit of folded paper or card) to stop the component sitting hard against the board, then a foam pad on top to push the components down. You want to avoid the component sitting hard against the board for two reasons: it causes a moisture trap, and when the leads contract after soldering it strains the component package.

Neons are quite useful devices. in several ways. Over 45 years ago, I built a 'Mains Failure Warning Device' which was based upon a single neon lamp wired as an audio relaxation oscillator, generating a sort of sawtooth waveform. No other active devices were used, only a couple of capacitors and resistors. A large capacitor, charged via a bridge rectifier, provided a reservoir to run the oscillator for quite a few minutes if the supply was disconnected. - The voltage dropped to zero at one end of the oscillator, upon supply failure, leaving the neon free to strike and oscillate. - It drove a 3 or 8 Ohm loudspeaker directly, and the piercing alarm could be heard clearly, throughout the house. I've forgotten the circuit, but perhaps you might like to build a similar device in a video, Clive? It would be very interesting. Thanks in advance.

Zh in Chinese is more-or-less a J sound, so Shenzhen is pronounced "shen-jen" and Zhengzhou as "jeng-joe". X is best thought of as "hs" so Xiamen is pronounced as "hsia-men" (like a really breathy version of sha-men). Hua is hwa, so Huawei is "hwa-way". If you can get on top of those three, you'll be doing better than most!

I wonder then, if you could make a commercial success of supplying neon bulb kits? It's funny how an ancient technology has lasted so long, and could even have a new future in a novelty lamp. I'd say they would make quite a good, and effective, night-light better than LED or incandescent lamps.

The wine thing is a universal constant, the law of the jungle. You sit and drink nectar, mother's milk, THE most perfect sensory experience to have ever existed at a piss up. You buy a bottle there and then, the day after call at the supplier your waiter wrote on the back of your condom packet.
You even open a bottle in the hotel and confirm the rapture is true. Next day it's the airport and by supper you are home, delicately inserting the corkscrew, lovingly withdrawing the cork (or unscrewing the stopper), you pour your new best friend into your favourite ninja turtle mug - lovingly caress the rim with your lops - and taste the run off from a septic tank!!!!
Doesn't matter what it is, where it's from or how long it took to get it home. The disgusting taste and foul smell is in direct proportion to the quantity you bought and the price you've paid.
What you drink on holiday is best left clinging to the wall outside the nightclub, 'cause you are never going to capture that taste again not even next month when you go back

hi, i love watching some of the things you do and it inspires me to try things myself..., the exploding disconnector which "burnt a hole in your fucking ruler" was AWESOME, i wasconsistantly being told off as a child for "destroying my toys" which was just me trying to learn something new about them and how i can modify them to be better and/or more dangerous than they started out, as we all know cheap toys usually come with the benefit of hurting the tinkering child in some way at some point, which leads me to the following novel-ish comment
i have an amp I got off ali express with a single audio output, I also have some old Christmas lights... yeah... I hooked up the little led to the speaker output and it just makes the led flash wildly which is cool, is there a way to put a resistor in line with the led between the amp and the led to limit when the led lights up? the desired effect is to light up when the bass drum kicks or close to it, not looking for perfection as that would end the fun part of poking around with it, I managed to do it somewhat with a resistor but i have to turn the speaker up to the max to get it to light the led and this also re introduces my issue of the led lighting up when there is singing and not just when the bass drum kicks, can you point me in the direction of the correct rabbit hole i should be diving into so i can save some money on the experiment, i spoke to the local electronics shop who just say " here is what you want" pointing to a 40 dollar item that does what i want, this is not much fun and i can probably get the same item online cheaper anyhow lol... i wanted to play around with it and make it myself and they just don't understand what tinkering is. thanks in advance
