Hans, this is one of the best reviews of the Marantz Model 40. There is so much fluff out there from other reviews. You are thorough and practical in your approach to the review. The technical explanations are refreshing since many other reviewers are less qualified to really review such a product. Kudos and thank you!
Bought the 40n in combo with set of Focal 936s as my first serious stereo set and am very happy! ❤ Just wanted to stream music and add speakers... and have a great listening experience... couldn't be happier
I'm waiting for my 40n to arrive and will be pairing it with the Focal Aria 936s as well. I was slightly concerned the 70 wpc would not do the speakers justice. Pleasing to hear that you enjoy the combo!
@LB-fz6th no worries at all with the 70W/channel... and note that the 40n has 70W over whole frequency range (not as most just a 1Hz test tone, as most brands claim). So it will do well above 70W/ch. Enjoy your purchase!
@Osuna.. Also from reading multiple reviews, and as mentioned earlier, the 70W/channel is over the full range, not just @1Hz continuously. So will be similar to >100W equivalent ase more common measurements. Trust they will do fine with speakers requiring >80W/channel. As I am no expert here, I'd suggest an extended listening test. Good luck!
Thank you for another well done review. I appreciate your effort to put it with different levels of equipment and coverage of the details. (made in Japan!) Now I must find a video on convincing wife why we need this...
I have the basic Marantz PM6007. It is versatile and flows and is lively. I wonder if I’d notice a big difference changing up. Your comprehensive review has really whet my appetite. Thank you.
I've learned a great deal about "digital" music via watching your channel, thank you very much for the great work. During the video you mentioned that you've had your Marantz KI Lite for a while and you're still happy with it because it's a great amp. My question is as follows, how and why does an amp go bad? I'm trying to understand if I have a well built and good but old Class A/B amp, does it make sense to replace it with a new one from an electronics perspective. I know sound is important but apart from add-on benefits like built in DAC, streaming, etc, what are the technological advances offered by new amplifiers.
A good class A/B amp is a good class A/B amp. The same goes for class D. Therre is a difference in character between both types of amps. Go listen for yourself at a dealer. Whether you want the add on benefits or not, I can't say.
I also went for the silver version and I have been very happy with overall sound using a pair of KLH Model 5 loudspeakers. I have also been pretty happy with the phono input which has been a rare experience for me for a built-in. Opted for the Bluesound Node experience with Roon but everything else is solid. Looks great on a shelf.
Using one of these to power a pair of KEF LS 50 meta speakers and a subwoofer in our upstairs AV system. I was a bit concerned that the 40N might be a little short on power for these speakers , but the amp is more than up to the task. My only negative experience was getting HEOS up and running initially as the 40N would absolutely not connect to the internet via wifi; I had to drag an ethernet cable to it and hardwire it before it would connect. This is apparently a situation reported by others.
Hi Hans, I really appreciate your detailed and unbiased review. Just out of curiosity, I saw you hooked up the rel subwoofer in setup 2 via the subwoofer out on the 40n vs using the high level input. Do you believe the subwoofer sounded better using the subwoofer out instead of the high level connection. I noticed in other reviews you have used the high level connection. I’m thinking of purchasing a rel subwoofer to go with my 40n so I’m curious which connection is better. Thank you for everything you do for the hifi community.
Great review and brilliant channel Hans. I’ve bought a new pair of Wharfedale Lintons which are coming next week. My existing amp is an old Marantz PM6003. A bit low in power but quite pleasing to my ears. Do you think upgrading to the 40n would be a huge step up sonically wise? Also, would the A-S 1200 be a better match? Thanks again.
Thank you Hans. I’m wondering whether you have any preference between the Marantz model 40n and the Yamaha RN2000a that you have also reviewed. Both look like fantastic all in one solutions!
I have the Model 40n and it sounds superb with my HD6XX headphones. It sounds extremely clean and non fatigued with excellent resolution and dynamics. The head stage is very wide even with the normally narrow head stage of the HD6XX. The headphone amp in the Model 40n has a very high output impedance (320 ohms) so it will most likely only pair well with high impedance headphones. My 2021 LCD-X did not sound all that great with it.
Hans, owning a Pearl Lite too, is it worth upgrading with respecto amplifier part 40n only? Or is stereo imaging Pearl Lite still better? This with respect to your 70% imaging remark.
Excellent review as always. Question. A while ago you had the opportunity to do a review like this with the Cambridge audio evo 150. At the end of this review you say that a class D amp would have a better bass response. My question is, how do you rate this amp against the EVO?
I really enjoy your channel. You have a very informative style. I own a Marantz PM7000n which is almost 1/3 the price of the Model 40n. It is hard to determine what the major differences are? I can’t find any comparison of the 2 models to made a decision to upgrade or not. Any thoughts? Thanks again for your content!
@@Niceaux_B Thanks a million for the feedback. There are no comparison reviews online anywhere and I assume it’s because Marantz wouldn’t be too happy. Thanks again.
@@alandonoghue5415 oh Marantz would be happy, why not? The upgrade is expensive if you already have a 7000. If you have nothing the 40 is an excellent buy.
Excellent review - I'm in the process of upgrading from my Leak Stereo 130 and I have found myself stuck between the Marantz 40N and Rega Elicit .. as both are in my price bracket... I understand they are different amps and one is a network player which I like - but I am more into my vinyl / CD and my old Nakamichi tape deck.. I have a set of Lintons which I find are perfect for my needs - greetings from Ireland

I have the Marantz PM11S2 and it still sounds great even compared to most modern amps - fast weighty bass and smooth engaging mids.

Hi Hanz, great in depth review. What is your take on the 40n compared with the more expensive Yamaha rn-2000a?
I just saw your answer to someone that asked this earlier-my apologies! Unless in that time your view has evolved?
It's not changed

No, I like the high level connection best. But I had to try the low level output on the 40n and it wasn't bad at all.

No, I have no clear winner. They are different bu equally good

Thanks for the review. Any comments on the headphone amp, is it a decent all in one solution also with headphone use in mind?
I'm no headphone listener so I refrain from comment.

It was 70% of the amp in my setup 1, which is the €16k Ayre AX-5 Twenty.

It's a small upgrade. I use both on a regular basis and wouldnt spend €1k on the upgrade.

Another nice one is the Arcam SA30 (th-cam.com/video/JKUjnHcHdWE/w-d-xo.html). My favourite.
In terms of analog sound, is it the same as Model 50?
I had not the chance to do an A to B comparison but they won't be that different. The circuits are rather close.
I didn’t catch the last line - replace the cover with what, sorry?
A see through Perspex cover
