  • Congratulations to 2017 Reno Air Race Unlimited Gold Winner Jay Consalvi. Back in 2010 we interviewed Jay for the "Let's Go to the Reno Air Races" video DVD where he was at PRS flying the Corsair and getting qualified to race. Jay's excitement about flying the Corsair is great and translates to all pilots that have been fortunate to fly one of their "dream" airplanes. Fast-Forward to 2016 where Jay was the top rookie and now to 2017 bringing home the win in Tiger Destefani's #7 Strega.

    My Dad was on the Wasp CV-18 at the tail end of the War AMM3C , said those Corsairs were really tough to land on the carriers, couldn’t see over the nose and really short final. Bitch to land on a carrier. Hellcat was a breeze compared to the Corsair. God bless all the Remaining WW2 vets. My dad is 95 and still going strong. His name is Chris Feil from Chicago. God Bless America.

    When I was a young Marine still pretty new to the fleet (2000) I caught guard duty for the 50th anniversary of the Korea War at Camp Pendleton CA. They had all kinds of Navy and Marine equipment and vehicles and on the last day I saw 3 F4u Corsair 's from Miramar fly in formation for all the Korean War vets and spectators. I absolutely ate it up being a Aviation buff and Navy & Marine aviation enthusiast. They sounded so beautiful and I'll never forget that experience. Thank you for the great video!

    It was about 1965 Compton, California Wilmington Blvd I was 12 years old on my way to school, and they're sitting a BIG BLACK AIRPLANE, and I mean big just like the one in the video - an F4U Corsair; it is number #1 of all warbird to me then comes to the P51 Mustang second to none.

    The corsair looks kind of goofy on the ground. But in the air she's a foxy flyer, looks totally at Home like when a seal takes to the water and is perfectly adapted. Engineering is often at its best when it mimics nature. A joy to watch tq.

    the F4U was the fastest prop plane built in WW2

    • @hughes2397
      @hughes2397 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it was. It could reach speeds up to 500 mph easily. They could maneuver just as well as they were fast. They were very durable, and could take an unbelievable amount of damage. They have always been my favorite piston fighter of all time.

      No, it isn't. The fastest fighter of WW-2 was the Messerschmit ME-163 Komet rocket fighter, with a top speed of just over 600 MPH. The highest top speed recorded for the Corsair was 445 MPH, and that was the "Dash 4" version. The Super Corsair was even faster, but, that was at low level.

    • @johnosbourn4312
      @johnosbourn4312 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      hughes2397 No, the Corsair, just like all wartime prop fighters, wasn't able to hit 500 MPH, because of the aerodynamic limitations of the prop. Instead, the highest top speed obtained by the Corsair was 470 MPH at low level, but, at high altitude, the F2G was slower than the F4U-4, and the Postwar "Dash 5" did top out around 460 to 470 MPH.

    Nice video! However, the pilot was way off on the total number of airworthy Corsairs, there's a total of 32 known flyable examples found here in the States, Britan, Canada, Austria, France, and Australia, not 19, like he said. Today, that number has increased by two: One, owned by the Flying Heritage and Combat Armor Museum, and another one owned by the Flying Heritage Collection, which raises the total to: 34.

      John, thanks for the update on this. The original interview was done many years ago so that may account for the difference in the #'s.
