- Welcome to this Aikido tutorial video featuring the Sensi Mohamed Elsayed. In this video, Sensi Mohamed will demonstrate the Kata-dori Men-uchi - Kokyu Nage technique.
Kata-dori Men-uchi:
Kata-dori: This refers to a shoulder grab.
Men-uchi: This indicates a strike to the head, particularly the front of the face, usually with the hand or the edge of the hand.
Kokyu Nage:
Kokyu: Translated as "breath power" or "breath timing". In Aikido, "kokyu" refers to the coordination of breath with movement and is intrinsic to the generation of power in many techniques.
Nage: This means "throw".
Putting it all together, "Kata-dori Men-uchi - Kokyu Nage" describes a scenario where the defender (nage) is dealing with an attacker (uke) who is attempting to grab their shoulder and deliver a strike to their head. The defender utilizes the principles of breath power and timing (kokyu) to execute a throw (nage).
Here's a basic breakdown of the technique:
Initial Attack: Uke initiates by stepping forward to grab the defender's shoulder (kata-dori) and prepares to strike the defender's head (men-uchi).
Blend with the Attack: As the uke moves in, nage moves to the side (irimi) or turns (tenkan) to blend with the incoming attack and avoid the men-uchi strike.
Capture the Attacker's Balance: The defender, by using kokyu principles, disrupts the attacker's posture and balance. This could involve movements like leading the attacker's arm upwards, downwards, or in a circular motion.
Throw (Nage): Once the attacker's balance is compromised, the defender uses the generated kokyu power to execute a throw, redirecting the attacker's momentum and energy to the ground.
Completion: Nage finishes the technique by ensuring that uke is safely on the ground, while they are in a stable and controlled posture, ready for any subsequent actions.
