Why Royal Enfield Bullet Has Always Air Cooled Engine? | Why Oil/Liquid Engine Not Given In Bullet?

  • Every time you crank up the internal combustion engine of your two-wheeler, there are countless explosions taking place inside the cylinder, which, along with the frictional forces of the various moving parts inside, generate a tremendous amount of heat. Engines convert energy produced by the burning of the fuel into mechanical energy; in our case it is into turning of the wheels. But not all the energy generated by combustion is converted into mechanical energy, the big chunk gets dissipated as heat energy. As we try to run the engine on higher revs, higher amount of heat is generated (due to friction between mechanical parts) which results in heating of the engine.

    For a smooth running of the engine as well as to maintain an optimum performance, the engine needs to be cooled down, and this where the ‘cooling technology’ comes into the picture. There are three categories we can classify engines based on the cooling method employed…
    1. Air cooled Engine
    2. Oil Cooled Engine
    3. Liquid cooled Engine
    The basic question about preference depends on the bike you choose which either comes equipped with air cooling or liquid cooling. There is also oil cooling, but it is not as efficient as liquid cooling. The liquid cooling systems are actually used for engines with higher compression ratio. When engines have a higher compression ratio and run at higher RPMs, the air cooling is not sufficient to keep the engine within normal operating temperatures; the reason why liquid cooling is used here. Yes, it does cost extra for maintenance, but overall is it something one has to bear for a longer living engine.
    But do not be under the impression that liquid cooling means a higher engine life. Any bike when cared for properly with regular servicing and fluid changes will last for a long time, no matter what. Just that the engines which do not burn a lot of fuel and run on low RPMs use air cooling because it really does not require liquid cooling to keep its operating temperature at an optimum level. The very reason why a 500cc Royal Enfield Bullet uses Air cooling whereas a Bajaj Pulsar 200NS uses liquid cooling. So it all depends on the engine and its working.

    That's very informative and also clarified why Royal Enfield doesn't upgrade their cooling game.
    But if that's the case, why is the Himalayan and Scram not recommended to be used on city roads? Why do they heat up so fast during rush hour traffic?

    Mera yeh experience raha 350 bullet ke saath bike aksar thandi ke mausam mein start karne mein dikkat deti hai ,
    Aur bahut thande ilake mein ye engine bandh bhi hota rahta hai..
    Fir bhi royal Enfield best bikes hai

    Par Danish bhai synthetic engine oil such as motul 300 v2 and iridium Spark plug ke sath bullet ka v engine en bike jaisa hi heat hota hai, aur company ka jish din bikri giri us din ye v add karna padega jaise ki classic mein fi aur disc brake with Swing arm suspension dena pada, Siddharth Lal who is owner of RE is very proudy and stubborn person as he believes in bullet sale is by its name.👍

    Additionally compression ratio is high in other bikes than RE. With High compression ratio combustion temperature is high. Also higher RPM means more fuel is burnt per minute. Friction amounts small heat.

Bullet ka compressio ration kam rakha gay hai , jaise 8.5:1 , jabki duke 200 me 11.3:1, yeah bhi heat ka bada reason hota hai.......... Rpm ke sath sath , engine me firing bhi badti rahti hai per minute , jisse sabse jyada heat badti hai .

      I think air-cooling. Not all bikes though, only Royal Enfields and Hondas. See, their max RPMs are quite low, so if there's less rubbing of surfaces, less would be the wear and tear of internal parts, and hence better longevity.
      But this is just the scientific explanation according to the video! In my view, Liquid-cooling is the best since we're gonna use our bikes mostly on city roads with traffic. Royal Enfield Himalayans and Scrams are not recommended to be used on city roads because the air-cooling won't happen unless fresh cool air hits it, which city traffic cannot provide! I'll go for at least oil-cooling. It's the perfect middle ground.
