OP is the LOTR of anime. Phenomenal world building
I agree, but there is the problem that building up something that big and balancing all of its moving pieces takes away a lot from the phenomenal main cast that made the first half of the story so good. The aspect that I think makes LOTR better is that a lot of the world building is relegated to additional notes and separate origin stories such as the Silmarillion, with the books continuing to focus on the members of the fellowship until the end.
Hardly. What makes LOTR the god of worldbuilding is its astonishing coherence. One piece by contrast is based on whatever the author likes for each arc. It's more flippant.
Highly recommend watching the serious arcs of Gintama. The best arcs are comparable to Marineford and chimera ant, and gintoki is goated.

Im glad youve come around on fire force. I remember bringing it up in ur power system stream and u said u had only watched a couple episodes at that point and were thinking of giving it up. The lore and power system (and arthur) is absolutely what carries the series.

Absolutely agree. Obviously the dark continent is not explored much as of yet. But the whale on which the current arc takes place has a fantastic, complex layout that is not hard to follow if you pay attention. It is highlyintecrate and all the moving parts of the succession war are connected even though they all happen in various parts of the ship.
@@Northbirdy I mean that's just one part of the manga that hasn't even been adapted into the anime yet so it's really difficult to rank the series just off that.
@@eggmon3813 What does an anime adaptation have to do with world building? You could use the exact same points I listed above for the palace invasion of the chimera ant arc aswell.
@@Northbirdy The anime adaptation part is a bit irrelevant but it’s just to show that the whale arc is only a small section of the series. But for the chimera ant arc, it didn’t have much world building? Maybe my memory is foggy, but the palace invasion had… 0 world building? Like sure they mapped out where everyone was in the palace, and it was all super intricate, that’s not world building though, that’s just having a dynamic battlefield/plot
I stopped watching HxH after around 100 episodes (during chimera arc) mostly because i was so disapointed by it's world building.
So up to the point where i stopped, it's d tier, imo.
Nothing in Pokemon resets, everything does indeed matter, but differently to some other series I guess
Death Note has quite a world-building in terms of how the different intelligence agencies work, how the world responds to the Kira phenomenon, how he changes the world, how detectives and criminals are treated, how money is spent, how men, women and Shinigami are each portrayed in their different ways... Not everything is about what's supernatural.
Death note world building is not that good, but to be fair thats what its supposed to be like. It did well in establishing certain rules id say but its just okay at best.

Haikyuu gets pretty introspective and really intense once they get to the tournament. The matches become season long ordeals. It has a twinge of Ping Pong in it in the way Voleyball is used as a vehicle for character exploration, but unlike it it still concerns itself with Volley as a central subject.

Quantity does not equal good worldbuilding. Things like pokemon and especially dragonball should lowest tier or close to that.
Even things like Naruto, which develops quite a few different areas and organizations of its world, always felt to me like it was very shallow and static.
Pokemon has quality world building too though. Never seen any better world building.

Naruto's worldbuilding is bad as fuck tbh. I mean, the countries are named after the elements, like the nations agreed upon it or something. So lazy and dumb. Naruto is all about character development imo, not really worldbuilding.

I agree that it doesn't have the best world building, but the country name thing is not a detractor.
We see in Hashirama flashback that because the "Land of (element) and the village hidden in the (element)" system worked so well for the Land of Fire and the Village hidden in the Leaves, that newly forming nations all copied that system. Once the 5 great nations copied the system and the naming scheme, it makes sense that smaller nations wanting to be on the big stage would also adopt it.
@@kenjiyst1352 so much for a "hidden" Village If other nations can copy its naming pattern in such cordination that there ARE no duplicates at all. The country name schemes feel artificial as fuck, and are 100% a detractor, but not the worst ofender. That would be the kaiju-style the so called "ninjas" fight in.

@@sadkeryasar9355 its a world of difference for anyone that read/watched both and has at least minimum regard for Fair and critical comparison. Just the name of the nations is already a world of difference, as one Piece locations have more realistic names, despite being high fantasy.

Look I love OP as much as everyone else but can we please stop pretending that Oda has planned literally every aspect of the story and that every detail makes sense when there are very clear retcons. Is his world building still top tier? Absolutely. But putting it in its own category like it’s infallible is a little disingenuous. Other series on the list deserve just as much credit as OP gets
Which one?the only anime i can think about that can rival one piece is re:zero.

There's too much cohesion in the world of OP that connects it perfectly, a lot of mysteries that are planted ahead of time and got a deserved pay offs, even AoT has like one or two of these at best. And I don't get what retcons are you on about, other than Haki being super awkwardly introduced, may be Yamato. In terms of the ground rules of the world, the interconnected nature of it - no other series (I'm talking only anime/manga) do that.
@@saitamaharuhiko8337 Haki, devil fruit awakenings, Nika in its entirety, Oden backstory, Rocks, this list goes on. Now when I say “retcon” it doesn’t mean it’s all negative, but Oda is clearly adding large new aspects of the world and its history very late into the game. People want to act like he plans every single aspect of the story when we know for a fact, he has admitted it himself, that that isn’t true. Vivi was not planned to be a princess or even an important part of the story, now she’s so important that she’s part of the D clan. I’m fine with big things being added and attempting to make up excuses for them, but at a certain point I roll my eyes by how much Oda is praised when clearly people will just gloss over how much is thrown in haphazardly.
Berserk is at least S and HxH is A IMO.

It is written like a tale for 5 year olds, you are tripping.
Part of the issue is that it is pretty old (stated in 1987) and was basically "what of Fist of The North Star but in Victorian England and with horror elements like Vampires" so was pretty derivative even at the time. Now with how much battle Shonen has progressed nothing really makes it stand put, so it seems SUPER generic apart from the setting. If part 1 and 2 didn't have the unique settings, they would be so forgettable.

I mean it's true that quantity alone doesn't make something good, but how much the author delves into the details of the world, its history, geography, politics and connections also matters. And when there are both quality and quantity then it's great worldbuilding, like in One Piece, or LotR, or literally every other fantasy that's commonly praised for its worldbuilding. I am curious to hear what stories you would say are great worldbuilding-wise though

One Piece world Building is kinda lazy to me. It’s really good but people over hype it as if it’s the staple of world building. One Piece imo is more of a grand adventure with world building elements…

Alright let me prove everything you just said wrong
1. Yonko crews did fought each other. Shanks was fighting kaido's crew during marineford, Big mom went to wano with the intention of fighting kaido etc.
2. There is fck ton of pirate history you are just blind to not see it, god valley, battle of edd war, conflict at lodestar, shanks vs mihawk,doffy's undertaking etc
3. I have no idea what you mean about the supernova
4. Kaku and lucci aren't very stong, they literally got low dif by stussy

Its not that the story is that different at world building. Would even say Super has even better one as there at least there is been hinted at the universe tournament. About everything in Dragonball(Z is not a seperate manga, so it should been seen as one) is just stumbling into the next arc. Nothing hints at a tournament, at Red Ribbon Army, Piccolo, Saiyans, Freezer, Cell or Boo beforehand.
