I was a fireman for the CP & LE RR back in 1993. I remember the first time I walked into the Park Ops dept and met the gal, peggy. She was shocked and she certainly showed it. You see, I am disabled. I have always liked trains and steam in particular. I was shown the training film and given my employee badge and once the training was done, I was free to enjoy the evening riding the rides. I started work the next morning. There were certain things I could not do due to my disability, but firing the steam locomotives, was pretty simple for me. I worked mostly on 22. That was my Fav loco to fire. I enjoyed the job for the most part, but of course there were a few people whom I didn't get along with, but I stuck it out. I enjoyed the CP & LE RR and my time working there. Towards the end of the summer, I was given the assignment of "Gatekeeper" at one of the crossings. I manned the one near the "Gemini" rollercoaster. I also got to meet Richard Kinzel and his wife, as they both would walk the park together and get a first hand idea if people were having fun. It was a fun time and I do miss it, but the hours...whew! That would wear me out! I always slept good every night. The RR wore me out, but I wouldn't trade it in for the world! Gonna have to get back to CP this summer and visit my old stompin grounds.....

It is awesome being able to hear from someone who worked on these locomotives, Albert is one of my favorite engines and I even got to touch the locomotive. Albert also inspired a 3-D model locomotive I made named Pete. I also have had many attempts to make a custom model of the locomotive and hearing the history that it almost became a runaway locomotive just adds to the reason I love the locomotive. Thank you for sharing and I hope you do make a video on the Albert if you have not already.

I wish there were more videos of amusement park railroads, explaining the inside scoop of just how they came to be!!!! I enjoy your story!!!! is there any way I could acquire these on dvd? What ever the price may be, THANK YOU for posting these fine movies and sound tracks. Albert and Maud L. have touched my soul!!!!!!!! thank you so much! peace

My great grandpa, Gil Clemens, was an engineer on the Maud L when they launched the RR at Cedar Point. Does that name ring a bell?

Is it true at one time the engine house could be connected in both directions to the main line

  • @cple1

salamander078 No it is not true. The degree of the curve to connect to the old outbound main line would have been too sharp. The tracks did and still do run all the way through.
