  • Romany Pajdak, Royal Ballet First Artist, demonstrates grand battement.
    Batterie/Battement: Movements in which the legs and feet 'beat' together quickly, usually as part of a jump. The may be performed as part of a jetés, entrechats trois, quatre, cinq, changements, grand jeté, etc. The difference between grande batterie and petite batterie [ lit. 'big' and 'small' batterie] depends upon the amount of elevation the dancer needs to jump to perform the 'beating'.
    i) Petits battements / battements tendus: extensions of the leg in which the working foot does not leave the ground, used to practise stretching the foot to a fully pointed position
    ii) Grands battements: high extensions of the whole leg, which is raised into the air and brought down again while keeping the rest of the body still.

    Doing it in a swimming pool helps me do it better. The resistance improves your muscle strength.

      That's exactly what I did a lot on holiday this month 😭 The water gives enough support for you to hold your leg up even if you don't have enough strength for it normally

    hey everyone,
    has someone got any tips to hold your leg in the air, at more than 90 degree angle?
    thank u

    • @wspitswinston8866
      @wspitswinston8866 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it's not balance, it's flexibility. the more flexible you get, the longer you will be able to hold it at more than 90 degrees. (ps ik you wrote your comment 8 years ago and i hope you got it!)

    • @meganepelletier853
      @meganepelletier853 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Flexibility is involved, but unless you feel a stretch at 90°, it is more often than not an issue of strength. People can stretch or kick far higher than they can hold unless they're already strong enough to reach full range of motion.
      To reach higher than 90° one usually needs to work on psoas (front/side), hamstring and glutes (back) strength. A lot of people tend to use their quads to lift their leg, but as strong as this muscle is, it is not the best to lift above hip level. Excessive use of quads also leads to bulking which many dancers, especially in classical ballet, try to avoid.
      Making sure you're engaging your core and other stabilizing muscles properly can also help. When you're not engaging these muscles, the muscles you're using to lift your legs will work to stabilize you instead, which decreases yoyr range of motion.

      @@meganepelletier853 Do you have any tips on how to get used to involving the hamstrings? I'm around maybe 100 degress in grand battements (if I have a good day) and around 80 in developpé, and I'm trying to practice them with ankle weights, but don'T know which weights are the best. You also mentioned, that it can lead to bulking. I don't really know what you mean by that, but I feel like my thighs are really wide from the side, especially the line at the front is really bent from the side. Maybe you cn imagine what I mean. Is this the bulking you mean?

      Basically, there’s different types of epaulement. Epaulement is the placement of the head. There’s looking outside, then there’s looking inside.
