Song: • September/The Joker September/The Joker - Earth, Wind & Fire - Fatboy Slim Ambient Soundtrack: • only love can conquer ... Only Love Can Conquer Hate - Ryuichi Sakamoto
This movie gets a lot of hate for supposedly being pretentious. I don’t know. It does the trick for me. I love it and this scene is one of my favorites. Good to know others share my view. I don’t know how anyone can watch this and not feel some empathy for her. I don’t love every Iñárritu film, but I usually have to pick my jaw up off the floor at some point. The most common gripe I see is the plot relies on some very low probability coincidences. I don’t mind that in this case because this movie isn’t about the plot. I can even accept it as a thought experiment that can show us something about ourselves. In a world where all these events were to occur, what would happen and what does that say about who we are and how we are? That’s what this movie is and I get it, it’s not for everybody.
this was truly one of the most masterful scenes in mainstream cinematic history. it never fails to bring tears to my eyes. there is so much fundamental humanity in chieko's silent, isolated world. the entire movie is worth watching just for the context that sets the stage for this scene.
@@stellaartois8853 ive never watched the movie and only came across this from my recommendations. coming from a person whos never seen the movie, it is quite masterful.
Best scene in the movie hands down, It really puts you in her shoes. I forgot she was deaf until she walked into the club, and I bet that's how she felt. Forgot all of her problems for a few minutes. Until she didn't understand what was going on anymore.
Gosh, I just wanted to hug her in this scene. Being too high to create boundaries when you like someone who gets together with your friend. I've been there for sure.
I can’t even describe how incredible this sequence is. It makes me just ache with nostalgia and longing for experiences that I’ve had and never had. I’m not that big a fan of the rest of the film, but this sequence alone is firmly among my favorite of all-time and I think it’ll stay that way.
Part of me wishes the entire movie was just about Chieko, I liked the setting and conflict a lot more than any of the other ones. Plus the shot of her on the swing is just one of the best shots in film history
This was so beautifully shot. One of my favorite scenes in the movie. First and second time I watched this movie I cried. I was emotional for weeks. Best piece of work and art done by Inaritu!
This was one of the best movies I saw by myself at the theater. I went to a matinee alone and smoked a bowl in my car in the parking lot. This scene was captivating with the ambient music and visuals of the city. Her story was honestly the only part I remembered from the movie for the longest time.
Mark Haze I’m entirely deaf from my left side. It’s not as hard as her journey with being ENTIRELY deaf but as someone who struggles with hearing, and feeling included, I don’t think I can overstate how much this movie was able to deliver the feeling of how isolating it can be at times.
The story of Chieko, a deaf and mute Japanese girl, is an interesting one. Few people have actually had to associate with people who are deaf and mute on a personal level. In the story we can understand that Chieko’s disability emotionally hurts her. She feels as if she is seen as a monster because she cannot speak nor hear people. In this situation Chieko has been placed in a group different from that of the majority, and because of that she is seen as being different. She isn’t given the same type of attention that those in the majority are able to get. For the most part it is understandable that she isn’t noticed as much as others. If you look at her experiences explained through the story you can infer that she is portrayed as being invisible. One prominent scene in Babel happens after Chieko takes an unknown drug and leaves the rave that she was at. You can see her walking down the streets of a highly populated metropolitan area in Japan. The scene is from her point of view, all around her is silent and it appears that she is aimlessly walking the streets of Japan. The interesting thing about this scene is that there is absolutely no sound, especially in this highly populated area. This scene portrays the idea that she is invisible, she doesn’t exist to everyone else just because of how eerie the silence was.
If it wasn't for Jennifer Hudson's acting and singing in "Dreamgirls" that year, Rinko Kikuchi would have won the Best Actress Oscar, and would have been the only Japanese female to win a major Academy Award...such a great portrayal of a deaf woman with many sides to her life, some happy some very sad and regretful, but full of hope regardless of her handicap.
I think it -may- _should_ have gone to Adriana Barraza actually (also for this film). Even though this is my favorite scene from the movie, I think Barraza did an overall better performance. You could really feel it when she’s pleading with the border patrol, “those kids will die!” I _felt_ that!
I’m Japanese and I think Jennifer Hudson deserves Oscar. Jennifer in Dream-girls was so powerful and brought a lot of tears in my eyes 😭 Her singing moved many peoples heart.
2019 first time I watched it. I didn't like it I hope I can see it again, and change my mind. The most real is the Asian girl, feel depressed for her mom, and for feel alone.
Crazy thing I havent seen mentioned in the comments is how extremely well they captured the effects/phases of taking molly/exstasy. From the early come up, to the euphoria and the eventual comedown/melancholic feeling. (Not everyone gets the downs but its pretty common) Pretty sure her seeing the guy not choose her intensified the comedown blues.
Brilliant scene. From the beautiful use of "only love can conquer hate" in the beginning to the incredible club scene with overwhelming sound and images. Iñarritu is a master.
Different times and many weren't ready for Alejandro's movies. Plus, those years were crowded with other great movies and his were more of the independent type. 2000, 2003, 2006, and 2010 (coinciding when those movies were released) were well, the 00s. Take that however you will.
Cada vez que veo ésta película (y a pesar de que no me parece la mejor de Iñárritu), me doy cuenta de que los Óscar nunca premian lo mejor del año. Rinko Kikuchi no sólo merecía estar nominada, merecía ganar por mucho.

I believe she was more heartbroken because she saw the guy kissing the other girl instead of not being able to hear anything. Nevertheless, the scene is pure gold.
@Kry Kry idk they never say why outright in the movie. Guess he just liked other girl for some reason. I think having him like her friend over her just made her feel even more alone, like "she's deaf mute like me and still got a guy, what's wrong me?".
I dont think that was it. Cheiko is very lonely… she is so lonely all she wants to feel is love and has no other way of understanding it other than the sexual encounters of a teenager. So when she sees her friend kissing the guy she was interested in, it’s more of a gut wrenching feeling of loneliness. Cheiko needs to love herself.
Does anyone know of any other films that have this same vibe/aesthetic or scenes similar to this one? This scene makes me feel nostalgic, melancholic, and bittersweet at the same time…love it
