"Freak on a Leash" from Korn's "Follow the Leader" album (1998).
More Korn soon. I have decided to focus a bit more on this band as the basslines are absolutely nuts at times. We don't have to like the music, but you have to agree that Fieldy IS an iconic bass player. Anyway, some of the rests sound like slaps which might be a bit confusing when you look at the tab. Compression is mainly why those mutes are so loud. Also, there's a video of Fieldy playing this, but those tabs are just showing what he is playing there. Thing is, Fieldy didn't play the exact same thing as the studio version. Luckily, there is an official bass track on TH-cam so that helped quite a bit.
Some important information that nobody is going to read.
Tuning: A-D-G-C-F
Artist: Korn
Bassist: Fieldy
Album: Follow the Leader (1998)
Song: FREAK ON A LEASH
Bass: Warwick GPS Corvette 5A Ash
When I first picked up bass I wanted to slap and play like fieldy, so this brings back so cool old memories
same
Me too. Now that I know how to slap, I do everything to not sound like Fieldy.
Same, now I realize how mid he is
@@jrjr1295 Now im more influenced by experimental and death metal personally
@@hermesbandofficial8551 he has a unique sound and does more for the sound of the band than most bassists imo. It took me awhile to appreciate his playing for what it is.
The difficult part about this song is Fieldy's slap technique. I like how you incorporated your own, sick cover!
Thanks a lot :)
There are things about Fieldy's playing that I'm not necessarily a fan of as I've gotten older, but I'm really impressed with how faithful this cover is. You always do a pretty great job of capturing the essence of the player who you are covering and we all appreciate your consistency.
Thank you so much! I gotta say, it feels like I still have to get used to this style since most of my covers have been.. well quite different I guess. It's fun though!
Just curious what you're not a fan of. I get that it's not thundercat or victor wooten. But it seems to work well with their overall sound.
Genuinely curious not trying to argue.
@@danielashby1913 It definitely does the job that it needs to for sure. It's honestly just more something that I don't enjoy playing all that much, and that has more to do with me as a player than it does Fieldy. Now that you ask me, I can't really think of anything else to say than that. He's not like incompetent or super rudimentary or anything, it's personal taste more than anything and I still like Korn as well.
@@andrelunaisatuna gotcha. Yeah I can see that for sure. Hey thanks for the reply! Curiosity cured 😁
>not necessarily fan of as I’ve gotten older
Hahahahaha mate he’s a famous multimillionaire musician while you’re a fkn bum on the internet take the air out of your tire a little bit
Damn, you nailed the tone
Thank you!!
idk how your so calm playing this, I'd be everywhere 😂
Practice!
I just tried this with a 4 string bass in this tuning! really freaky sound XD
How did you do this!? It's almost impossible for me to tune down to drop A. The lowest I can go on my 4 string bass is drop B. What strings and setup are you using?
@@sheltonprabhakar9811 I have a feeling he didn't tune his E string to A. He probably just down-tuned to D-G-C-F
@@sheltonprabhakar9811 It's possible with correcting your guitar's anchor rod, but it's not easy to play clean on 4-string bass in this tuning.
His playing style was really cool during that time. Definitely got my into playing bass.
Fuck yeah love the tone during the slapping section great job!
Thanks Marcos!
Fieldy is underrated, he's by no means the best or most creative bassist or anything but the guy is perfect for Korn's music
Agreed!
The verse is actually pretty well structured.
right? Compared to the chorus it's like two different bass players.
Very hip hop in style right. The song is quite rare bass wise that it melds many forms of bass rhythms. Non exceptionally hard but very unique tbf. Korn are quite underrated in my opinion. Though I can't believe i say this about a multi platinum selling band 😂
Just found this channel irs awesome always loved Korn, Im a vocalist recently , newbie Bass player , doagnosed w cancer last year and bass playing has made me stronger shout out to all cancer survivors and everyone stay positive
Oh jeez, I'm sorry you had to go through that. Gotta stay positive indeed :)
@@LeoBassCovers2 thank u for the lind reply, maybe one day I will also have my own bass video channel ,
Everything is possible! Just checked out your vids. Nice singing!
i never cared much for slap bass but fieldy just makes it fit so well
I definitely don’t like Fieldy technique but he definitely has an unique style. That’s something most bass players can’t achieve
Agreed. Even if it is very weird and painful to listen to at times, he is really iconic.
Solid cover.
Thank you!
this was amazing. Loved it so much. please do more Korn.
Thanks! more Korn very soon
Daaaaaaamn 😍 this was so dope Leo. Really nailed that Fieldy tone. So rad!
Thanks as always Tiffany :)
Great, as always. Thank you for your work.
My pleasure! :)
Thank you for your cover of korn. It gives me a goal to learn from on the way to study... I also look forward to more covers of korn🖤
No problem! I'm currently transcribing yet another Korn song, so no worries :)
Hell yeah, brother!!!
Amazing job, man!!
🤘😎🤘
Thanks again man!
Yes dat groove !
Sick cover!
Thank you!
that Warwick sounds absolutely monstrous, i love it. still not tuning to A Standard to play it myself, though.
How would you play it? :o
i'd drop the first two strings to ADADG. was just joking that i saw ADGCF and thought "nope, not dealing with that right now."
@@LeoBassCovers2 I only have a 4 string, so I'd do B-E-A-D tuning and play it up a step.
approved✅
I always thought Korn deserved a better bassist. This song is a great example of how Fieldy spent more time shopping for sneakers and track suits than he did writing basslines. You nailed his tone. Scoop those mids till it sounds like a tic-tac falling down the stairs
You're the kind of person who thinks Meg White didn't contribute to the White Stripes. Fieldy's bass was a backbone for the music. It doesn't matter if it wasn't fancy. Not everyone has to constantly show off.
@@HonkeyKongLive I'm pretty sure bass is the backbone to all music, dude. If you think I am talking about him being more 'fancy', then you really don't understand anything about that backbone.
Please do “it’s on!”
Amazing as usual!!!!! Thanks for this! Your bass tone is awesome
Thanks as always! :)
That's awesome could you play right now Korn please and thank you
Hey Leo! I love ur channel, ur bass playthroughs are always so clean and accurate, I was wondering if you could learn dig by mudvayne?
*Looks at tuning.*
*Contemplates how to transpose to cheapy 4 string Ibanez.* :)
Great cover/walkthrough! Love the slappiness.
Thank you! I'm not sure if this tuning will sound any good on a 4 string..
Do ALL of them! :D Congratulation to 25k subs !
Thank you!!
the tone is too good
Thank you!
It’s so depressing to hear about Fieldy taking a hiatus break from the band but hey Brian”Head” Welch was absent from the band for almost 6 1/2 years and came back a BETTER guitarist and matured and sober
Shame he started believing in fairy tales though 😒
3:12 The easiest part in order to play
Percussive Bass!
When watching this video, the transition from finger style to slap to finger style again gave me insane whiplash
1:08 i like that part its like it changes the mood
Fieldy is an underrated bassist. His lines are simple but effective. He’s not the most underrated but def underrated. I think one of the most underrated is Chris Novelselic. His lines are very creative but he mostly gets overshadowed by the success of Fok Fighters and the death of Curt. I’d love to see you cover Lounge Act. Or anything from Bleach
The thing about Krist is he didn't write like majority of the basslines. In fact Kurt wrote both the Lounge act and Love buzz basslines, Krist himself really wasn't very creative
@@alexberube5269 I have never heard that before. Interesting
@@kryptonian5539 yeah, he can play them but Kurt and Dave wrote like everything
@@alexberube5269 well there are some killer and creative bass lines in there that no one hardly ever talks about.
@@kryptonian5539 yeah for example the clincher by Chevelle
amazing, man! I fucking love this song! well done!
Thanks Thiago!
after 3 years of playing bass i learned quickly and I was able to play like fieldy, i was very bad when i first started.
I'm about to buy a bass guitar, this man is on fire!
Awesome Cover. \m/ Can you do Got The Life by Korn?
amazing, please do more korn!
More Korn soon!
omg nice toneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee we need :D Falling Away from Me !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you!! Falling Away From Me will be up in early January :)
Nice bass line and well played
Thanks you :)
You can hear the bad brains influence
Love the videos.helps a lot with my bass playing would love to see tabs for shoots and ladders by Korn next
I'll keep it in mind, thank you!
Thanks
Shoots and Ladders is online! th-cam.com/video/u2WCzyA_Av4/w-d-xo.html
Fieldy is better than Billy Sheehan and or a Giddy Lee. Change My Mind…
Slaptastic!
man that‘s nice…
NEPENTHE - Opeth please 🤟🏽
Of harika bir şey bu cover
Çok teşekkürler!
hey bro, how did you make your bass sound like that during the chorus. Im big dumb and cant figure it out lol
It's just a lot of treble really. Once the chorus hits, I really start to strum very aggressively which you can hear back in how much treble there is.
Can I play chorus with dead herring fillet? 🤔 It would sound more meaty.. ;)
2:48
Wow I’ve Never seen that trick before.
Justin Chancellor also does it in a few songs, but with a pick.
How do you tune this on 4 string ?
You sort of... don't. You can play it a full octave higher by just using the 3 higher strings. It won't sound that great though
@LeoBassCovers2 oh I better buy a 5 string bass then ... thanks for the reply and keep these videos coming there awesome !!
No problem and thank you!
I read the important information on the description don’t worry 😅
Unacceptable..
Nothing like a Warwick cant wait to own one some day
I know this video is old but I’m wondering if you still know how you got that clicky crunchy tone like fieldys? Thanks.
You really just have to put the treble on 11/10 on both the amp and the bass itself, go easy on mids and also something like 8/10 bass. A tiiiiny little bit of drive/distortion, but really his tone is built on treble
@@LeoBassCovers2 thanks mate!
Excited to see you do KoЯn!!
Just gonna jot down some future suggestions
Insane
The Ringmaster
Divine
Prey For Me
Beg For Me
Honestly I could list a lot but I'll leave it at those few as to not seem demanding lol
Thanks for the suggestions! funny though, I just finished a bass cover of Floods by Pantera which you should know very well with a profile pic like that
@@LeoBassCovers2 Yooooooo let's fucking goooooo
@@LeoBassCovers2 just found your channel and you play a lot of genres and bands that I like, I'll definitely be watching your shit from here on out
Welcome!
great sound very cool articulations and feeling!!!!
Thanks a lot!
The sound you used at the chorus should be used throughout the entire song. Either way good cover!
If only.. thank you!
How did you get the same tone as Fieldy?
Lots of treble and bass, but no mids. Not using an amp but just the raw bass sound.
@@LeoBassCovers2 what setting is the treble and bass ? My bass amp is a boss katana
Perfect!😀
Thanks!!
Isso e música prós meus ouvidos kk
Wicked
Beautiful tone and badass cover!!!
Thanks a lot!
You slap game...amm...
Dude that was badass
Thanks man!
what type of amp would be good for korn bass like fieldys but not too much money
This was awesome. What gear did you use to get the tone?
Honestly, not much. It's just the raw bass tone with a lot of treble and bass. Then an amp simulator (Ampeg SVT-VR) to boost those frequencies even more.
@@LeoBassCovers2 Thank you for the reply, I appreciate it. I’m going to try out that amp sim.
I think most amp simulators will allow you to create such a tone though. you just need to be able to use A LOT of treble and bass
Korn songs really take a long time to grow on me, but they usually do. Except for Black Is The Soul, which I instantly fell in love with. Glad to see you're planning on covering more of their songs!
The best bass line ever.
Can u do wicked feat chino on bass pls
i love your t shirt!! Great song and bass line
Thanks! And agreed :)
Good job, 🤴
Thanks!
Fieldy ain't no chicken, Fieldy ain't pluckin' for nobody. SLAP SLAP SLAP
nice cover!
Thanks a lot! :)
Where's the high note in the breakdown from 2.57? You can actually hear it coming through on the record but you're just slapping the B string.
That is just noise coming from his bass because he is slapping it so hard while not really muting anything. If you listen to the official isolated bass track on youtube, you'll hear that the high note was basically unplanned and turned up due to compression
@@LeoBassCovers2 Oh yes you're right. I thought a higher string was being plucked while muted too. It really cuts through the mix.
It really does!
Más korn y otras bandas de nu metal plis
More Korn soon!
That sound 🤤
Christ: this really brings home just how awful KORN are
I appreciate this
I appreciate the comment
Fuck yeah!! Thank you so much!! Sounds great too!! Now I just gotta figure out how to transcribe this to a four string.
No problem! Good luck with that though. I guess you could technically do it an octave higher and slap the 5th fret on the E string instead of having the low A. Some parts might be a bit tricky
What keeps you from buying a 5 string pack and dipping the G string?
Where do u get the backing tracks for the korn songs
I don't, i just remove low frequencies from the song and play over it :)
@@LeoBassCovers2 how do u do that
véry good !
Thank you! :)
🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎🤎
Fieldy is such a hack lmao
Suggested video on the side: "Korn - Fieldy teaching to play the music Freak on A Leash and"
It's a shame that Fieldy doesn't actually play the exact same basslines as the original song in that video. But I did use it for reference
@@LeoBassCovers2 I just thought it was funny it being right there. You ever do metallica? Kill 'em all has some fun bass rifts on songs like No Remorse or Jump in The Fire or even Pulling Teeth which starts with a bass solo.
Korn was awful and the bass playing was at the heart of what made them so bad. Nothing against you.
Awful in what way? They differed from a lot of bands in the 90s and their mix of such genres as hip-hop, funk, punk, metal and electronic with freaky vocals sounded really weird. But they were pretty good and creative musicians so they had became very influential and gave life to new genre of music. Yeah, i understand that there are resons for disliking them, but they are definitly not awful. Do you have any objective reasons for that?
So fucking good!
Thank you!!
😍
1:28 It is so freaking hard to bend on the fifth string.
Try to do it with a finger that has the most strength, unlike an index finger. it might help
Пиздатенько, респект!
I fucking love you for this.
Thanks, Leo.
A pleasure!
Watchmaker - steven wilson plis
Хочу видеть больше кукурузы! Однозначно лайк
Damn I didn't know bass was so easy
*Les Claypool entered the chat*
is this in standard tuning?-
A standard, ADGCF
Hey what does the X on the tab means when you are slaping?
It's a muted/dead note basically. So you mute the string with your fretting hand but still slap/pluck it with the other hand.
@@LeoBassCovers2 Thank you
Got The Life next pleaseee
Rotting in Vain and Falling Away from Me are next, but that one is also on the list I think :)
@@LeoBassCovers2 can't wait man. Amazing job as usual
cant hear the bass.
How are you listening to it? I can hear it just fine with my headphones.
