How to Create ATMOSPHERIC DEPTH in a Landscape Painting

  • In this video I show you how to paint a mountain landscape inspired by the mountains around the village of Glenorchy in southern New Zealand. This is a place where I used to go plein air painting a lot as the mountainous landscape is stunning.
Throughout the video I explain how to create atmospheric depth, using appropriate values and colours to make the mountain recede into the distance.

Hi. Thank you for your videos and your tuition. Thanks to you I am changing my painting style and learning how to loosen up. I like the way that you explain your colour mixes and how to do things like atmospheric perspective. It's all really useful and your calm and relaxed presentation style is also excellent. Thank you for providing this service. Please keep the videos coming, I always look forward to them.

Would be interesting to see a huge painting from you Sam with your technique. Sometimes size makes big difference especially when you are used to one size. When used to large and going back to small is complicated don't know how to put all details in such small space.

Thank you Sam you have given me confidence to leave out a bit of detail without worry. As a subscriber since the early days your video editing is excellent and seeing the palette/color mixing is very helpful. Quick question: here in the U.S we can't find Langridge oils so my yellow oxide (transparent) mixes muddy awful greens, would something like yellow ochre work?

    • @SamuelEarpArtist

Very nice Sam. I can see your journey evolving with every painting. Yellow Oxide has been hard to find. It is true that I can't find Langridge in the US. Soho stopped carrying it. But Jackson Art Supplies in England carries Langridge and the shipping has sometimes been less than regular shipping in the US. I just got Yellow Oxide today. Thanks again Sam. I love your more limited palette.
