SCAMMED in China AGAIN but by a FOREIGNER!

  • Even though I’ve come to peace with everything that has happened, I am still very upset and hurt by this second scam. This is one of the hardest things I've ever had to overcome. It’s effected me the worst and I kept crying as I edited this video because I felt like I was in some way re-living it. But I really think this story needs to be told, even if it’s just for my friends and family. I showed my parents this video and even they were shocked. Obviously they knew vaguely what had happened but they didn’t know the extent of just how bad things were. I really hope this video is helpful and that it’s a way for me to speak up for others who haven’t yet or don’t know how too. I’m not the only one to fall victim to this and I’m sure even not the only one to be scammed by this particular foreigner. So let’s share this video and make these scams stop!

Thank you everyone for all of your support and encouragement! I was so nervous to post these videos because I know I messed up, I know I didn’t go about finding a job correctly, I know I should have quit when I wasn’t getting paid, I know I didn’t handle the situation in the most intelligent way. For that I am embarrassed and ashamed, thus I hesitated posting these videos. But I can’t change the past. It happened and it’s time to move on. I’ve accepted the fact I’ll never receive the money I’m owed and I’ve come to peace with it. I will not go to the police, I will not expose their identities, that decision is final. My life is posted all over social media and it’s fairly easy to find me. It’s not worth putting my life in danger if these people get upset and decide to come after me for revenge. I often travel by myself and I don’t want to be worried all the time that my life is in danger. And I want to keep posting content and making videos about my life journey because I think people can really benefit and learn from my experiences, whether positive or negative. My goal with this channel is always to be relatable and guess what? Nobody’s life is perfect and glamorous, even if it seems that way in videos. And I don’t film every aspect of my life, that would be boring and not useful to anyone. What I do show you has to serve a purpose or what’s the point? I didn’t make these videos so that you feel sorry for me, I made them so that people are aware of these scams and know how to recognize and avoid them. And it’s never stopped me from exploring China. In fact, I really want to keep exploring China (maybe when the weather gets warmer). It’s a place where I consistently feel inspired and in my field, that’s very important! I hope you all will continue to follow me as I explore different parts of the world and expose different cultures and people. That’s my goal! So stay tuned, this weekend I’m taking you to Singapore!

I just don't know why the foreigners don't go to the police when they are in trouble in China. If it is not your fault, the police are always more in favor of the foreigners. Even if it were you fault, the police would still be really helpful and protective.

    • @Fightyourego
      @Fightyourego 5 ปีที่แล้ว +32

@@thalyasalazar3323 I guess I'll get into details as it may help people. I'm a foreigner on a student visa, studying at a university. A language school tricked me into thinking they had a legal way for me to work part time and provided me with some through the "national security bureau for record " acquired papers (volunteer work with compensation, the papers turned out to be forged, even though you actually can get those papers legally). After I got in trouble I explained everything and the police helped me kindly, they even drove me back to my dorm room 1 hour after fixing everything and when I arrived back I shared a cigarette with them while they personally apologized for the inconvenience and warned me for future scams by schools.

Thanks Magnuss! After Clyde's threat I was too scared. I didn't want to Jeopardize my channel. Even though I knew his threat was in a way "fake", I mean he's threatening someone who has the ability to share his information for thousands of people to tune into, not very smart on his part. But his responses and sudden change of attitude really scared me. I just think he's a sociopath and I was worried if I did get him into trouble, when he was freed he would come after me or something. I just feared the worse and I didn't want to put my life in danger over such little money in the long run.

And you know I always feel that helping a foreigner is a much honorable job for them, probably because that could show how open-minded the government is.
But you should be aware that, police offices in big cities are usually more efficient.

In the past few years in China, I called police quite a lot of times: Seeing a lost child on the street, having an argument with taxi driver, smoke coming out of a parked vehicle, see someone injured on the road...and every time the police would double check with me to make sure the problem is solved before they stop contacting me.
There is always news that they would help foreigners even more. So at least every foreigner should not be afraid to call 110 for help. As long as you are not trying to fool them and make fun, it would be OK.

I felt the aftermath pain. I struggled in depression for a couple of weeks and felt so hopeless in this dishonest society. Still I shared my experience on social media to aware others. Although ppl will think being scammed is a total stupidity, bt i am sure sharing it is still the right thing to do!!! I really feel sorry to hear your unhappy story in China, and I want to give you words of consolation. I'm Korean living in S.Korea. There's an old ancient story goes like this: (Excuse me for my bad English.) There was an old man. An old man was sad when his horse ran away from home. He was happy when his horse came back with a female horse. He was sad when his little son broke his leg falling from the female horse. He was happy when his son was exempted from military conscription because of his leg when his country was engaged in a war. All the soldiers conscripted in the village died.

She texted her resignation. In US, As long as she let you know verbally it is enough. They owe her that month of salary work. The school should have substitute and course work already set up for potential situations like this. Poppy gave 1 month of notice which is plenty. Contract works both ways. No employer could threaten withholding a passport and no employer should hold that much power over anyone!! That already tells me a lot. Talking to Human Resource do not cost money. That is ridiculous. Yes it might be unprofessional but it is also possible that employee weren’t treated well... hence employee leaves. It works both ways.

I definitely can share ur feeling, I used to be scammed twice in the States. The first one just costed $1, I stopped further damage with the help from BOA. (Thank to google, I immediately notice it was like a scam, and with the comments of others, I know how should I end it). While the second one was way more nasty, I even can barely sleep and eat back in time. It's less than ur $5000, but still several grands, not a very small number for me, and actually money is not the point, the process was really torturing, and I even sought help from lawyers. What I did is just to try to get away from the situation, I was on the verge of collapse, I even wanted to fled back to China. I even wished to surrender all the money to be off the contract. However, the bad ones cannot be fulfilled simply, and I have no way but to seek legal aid, I could not let them think that an alien is always naive and defenseless, and are fine to be bullied. Finally I got my money back, not entirely, but thankfully the contract was gone. Poppy, take Law as your weapon, though China's justice system is... you know, don't be weak, stand up and fight back like a knight, there's nothing to be afraid of. Just like Chairman Mao's old saying, those scumbags are all "paper tiger". We are all on ur back.

Hi Poppy! Thank you for sharing this video. I work at a scam school right now in Beijing and to be honest, the red flags have been around since I arrived in August, but I was too trusting to ever do anything about it. I did not want to believe that I was working for a corrupt school because we have a partnership with a private American high school that I thought I could trust. I have learned the hard way too that foreigners can really screw you over also in these situations as well. I have had enough of my school and have put in my resignation because I thought I should do the right thing, like you. I have a week left before I leave back to the United States and my school is making it very difficult for me to get the money they owe me back and cancel my visa so that I can come back in the future to work for another school. I feel extremely defeated. I am encouraged by your video and your love for China...because right now I am just extremely frustrated and angry by the whole situation. Thank you.

    • @WheresPoppy
      @WheresPoppy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Oh no I’m very sorry to hear this! Well don’t feel bad or stupid that you never fully understood the red flags. I saw them too at the time but was just too optimistic and trusting. These people are well experienced in scamming and we obviously are not. All I can say is that things will get better and that lost money will no longer matter to you. Unfortunately there are bad people in this world but there are more good than bad. I sincerely hope you make it out of this situation okay! Best wishes to you!

There’s two sides to every story, every foreigner I’ve known who’s had problems with a school mostly brought them on by themselves, they were late, didn’t have a positive attitude towards teaching and were focused on other things. A text message isn’t a professional way to quit, it’s incredibly hard for schools to find new teachers so I’m not surprised they didn’t pay you.

Poppy, I am so impressed by your clarity, articulate presentation of the facts, and taking responsibility for the negative events, lies, financial impact, and betrayal by those posing as friends. In my view, this only enhances your credibility and makes me feel that I am watching a genuine person who has not allowed these setbacks to take hold of their life, or leave them with lasting injuries. I've travelled a great deal, buy never visited China. Now I have a trip planned to meet a Chinese friend in Shenyang in September, 2019. I'm enrolled in a 16-week Chinese 101 course at San Diego Mesa College, and I'm also watching and learning from your TH-cam content. It is a great privilege to be able to experience other cultures. Even the darker events, such as what you experienced, can help us to grow, and become stronger. Perhaps there cannot be light without darkness, or gains without losses. Thank you for sharing this very personal story, and giving back so much more of yourself. You are truly a beautiful spirit. Cheers, Joel @ectophile

I did. And, like you, I don't blame China or the people there. The children were great. They were very hard working. I really blame the company and whoever they hired to comply with, and perpetrate, their insidious behavior. Clearly, this is a systemic problem amongst English/language schools, who think they can operate this way in China (and place the blame on Chinese labor law, when actually its their OWN design that is at fault). And they do this with impunity. In my case, it was non-Chinese, exploitative people (a European school with US recruitment in Cambridge, MA) who thought they could operate this way, and they used various intimidation tactics to keep you hanging...threatening to fire you if you did not work 25 hours more than agreed to/week than explicitly stated in my contract (which means, in actuality, I was working between 65-70 hours/week and being paid for 40), delaying reimbursement for your out-of-pocket/VISA expenses (they agreed to repay upon arrival), and making false promises regarding US-Chinese joint health coverage (I never got my Aetna card and had a medical emergency they did not deal with, bleeding me financially, also with promises of reimbursement). So many promises were made that made the whole 'package' so attractive initially -- all of which were false except one (they did pay my airfare to China). Other than that, it's hard to reconcile what they 'sold' me with what I actually received. So... there was a lot of advertising fraud, in US recruitment, and outright contract breaches, realized AFTER arrival in China. Given these circumstances, I have no idea why they even bothered with a contract, in the first place, since it was basically unenforceable. So I made it really easy for them. I simply left after completing the summer school (I wasn't going to disappoint my students). Some of the parents were thanking me and sending me gifts, but I told one of them I just couldn't stay. It's a nasty cycle they're in and apparently they don't mind chewing people up and spitting them out. I now see why they spend way too much time recruiting -- and that is because they cannot retain staff. Anyhow, thank you for your amazing videos, Poppy! You still got more out of China than I did. I also agree with one of the other viewers: that if you had actually been happy at the school...or if that job had worked out, you probably wouldn't have found your true calling, which is to do these videos! Take care and keep doing what you do!

I’m so sorry to hear about your experiences, and it is very true that these scams don’t fully represent China. I taught in China’s largest English training company for five years in a major city and have connections with many English schools and teachers after moving to the US. My former foreign coworkers were treated fairly and the only difference of salaries would be the tax rate for foreigners was higher. I would suggest you find a bigger size school ( do your research - branch schools in major cities , several locations in one city, means something- e.g. New Oriental, Wall Street English). And like many other viewers said, do not be afraid to go to the police station and talk about your experiences. I know they prioritize foreigners’ scams, even you can’t get your money back, you can build up a case and that might help someone else in the future.

I personally don't trust private English schools or agencies. The obvious better and hassle free choices are the local public schools and universities. when looking for job in Asian country never use agency or website, best way to get job:
    1. look for good company and go to there web page and see if they have career or job opening
    2. make a CV with photo, languages, all the different job you are open to like sales, marketing, designer, translator
    3. go to the company and hand in your CV in person because that leaves a impression
4.when you work for a company and if they want to know where will you stay, how will you get to your job and if they company try to help, it is a good job, sometimes the company try to cut it out of your salary than the job is not for you, get out and if the company is Stingy in anyway, get out
5.if you think it is to good to be true or something does not feel right, say NO, and walk out and never be afraid to go to police

Just keep in mind, be sure to talk to your employer about how you would get your WORKING visa before you start working! As a Cantonese working in LA for over ten years, I will say it is not easy to get started a career or business in a foreign country and I totally understand you. Here are my suggestions:
1, friends are friends and business is business. When working with your friends, you still need to do it in a right way like signing contracts, doing all paperwork...
2, China is highly competitive in every field and if you sound something too good to be true, be careful!
3, don’t be afraid of looking for help when you are in trouble. Most of Chinese including local police are willing to helping foreigners. China is a so called communist country but if you are an ordinary foreigner and not intentionally doing anti-government stuff, you are 100% fine. Trust me It is really not a big deal even you foreigners talking about Chinese politics or negative issues.
I know it not easy but you know there are so many people like you and me working in foreign countries so “JIA YOU “ 🤝🤝🤝

Hi Poppy, thank you so much for returning to the uncomfortable memories of scams. I began working as a teacher in China back in 2005 and fortunately, I have never been scammed. But I pay attention to any ESL teacher websites, and try to look for signs. If I may add something about scams, I tried teaching in Thailand after returning from 7 years teaching in China. Soon found out from many foreigners as well as my own experience of something called "the Thai way." Finally asking point blank a Brit as we traveled the bumpy 12 hour transit to Laos he told me that it means that the Thais are going to try to get as much money out of you as possible, but all of it will be according to Thai rules or changes that they won't make clear until it is time to pay up. If you argue, they will tell you that you are no longer in your native country and that this is the Thai way. Behold, it is exactly what they did. Not only that, they will tell you this even after they have deceived you with complete lies to get you to accept something initially. So, what I am actually saying is that I found Chinese employers to be generally honest and trustworthy about pay, but I do not recommend Thailand for work. If you do WANT to work in Thailand, then you should become a sort of advocate of Thailand, and abandon any sense of what is right or lawful in your native or developed nation, because Thailand will prey upon that with a certain pride and spite.
I am really sorry for the things that happened to you. You are probably like me and do not have parents or family who are savvy business people or internationally experienced who could prepare you for fraud abroad. I have heard about entrepreneur schools abroad, and I avoid that immediately. As you know, go with a totally legit school, and not necessarily a private tuition school. My first teaching job in China was at a small city middle school, and it was totally legit except for the fact that they assigned me to teach their "special ed" class and had never told me that unti mid semester when I continued to talk about the issues I experienced in the classroom and they told me the truth, that their parents had paid extra for them to be in the school, but that they had not really satisfied the entrance requirements, etc. I still love those teachers and staff from that school, but they told me to just play games with that class and that was really disappointing. The next job was at a university and they absolutely refused to allow me to teach one class per week at the nearby univ who personally invited me to do so, and a packed classroom each time I showed. Hindsight told me never even ask to do such a thing, as they will not give permission, but I know of no one who has ever been busted for doing it.
Lastly, for now, I just want to add two things; 1. If you did want a very legit salary to pay loan debt, then working at the big three will be a great choice: Wall Street English, English First, or Web International English. I worked for Web in Yangzhou, and then Shanghai, and it is a much higher salary than almost any private or public school in China, and they give you a housing stipend according to the area you live in, transportation allowance, flight allowance every year and a bonus every year. They have a curriculum of graduated levels, but you learn them and it is from no English background to Advanced Business English, which is not really that advanced at all. Anyone who watches this video and would like to find a place to work, with high salary and legit contracts, the big 3 are very popular for the hardworking foreigners. But it is all year round teaching with minimal vacation time. Second, I understand what you mean by saying "It's your fault if you have been cheated," but let's not have to resort to blaming the victim, as it is not only what almost ALL criminals do, but it is not even the position of the criminal justice system. You were and are a victim, in the first case of fraud and in the second, breach of contract. Remember there are attorneys in China who will represent you, as I went to one and he was willing to represent me. It is unfortunate that you feel oppressed by someone threatening you with espionage based merely upon your youtube videos. I don't know of any cases of any foreigners being arrested or tried for espionage for putting videos of China on youtube. So Poppy, please don't let such a threat stop you. It is an idle threat. You are a wonderful person, and have every right to protect yourself from crime related to contracts.

I would love to share my story to you some day, but too long to write here. October 2001, my first trip to China. An incredible trip with a terrible ending, but the beauty of China and the people lures you back. I agree with you, it is not always China's fault, you just have to learn to understand China.
On the positive side, that first trip introduced me to my wife 7 years later. Who would have known.... I'm happily married to China ❤️

Stumbled across this video and the one preceding. Labor arbitration is always a choice. Glad you persevered. I’ve lived in Asia for 7 years. Ups and downs, but China is definitely an adventure. I’ve been to labor arbitration twice. Finally have a great situation, and we are hiring too, btw. I’ll check out your other videos because I’ve got my own website too. It sounds like you videos would be quite informative, so I might share them. Best wishes.

You are doing the right thing to expose those scammers. Believe in yourself. I watch most of your video, you have nothing to be afraid of, you deserve to live in any countries you want, those scammers should leave, not you. As other people said, call the police would be the best way to solve this kinda problems in China. Chinese police take the foreigners’ cases very serious, they could deal with your case immediately once you reported.

Oh my god!!! can’t believe you went through all these shits and were still bubbly and positive in all videos when you travelled around China, not revealing a thing about it! I am Chinese btw and live not far from where you were living. Guangzhou that is. I wish you have shared this with us when it happened. There two scammers are so bloody disgusting! I totally understand your insecurity working under travel visa and I can’t really think of any better suggestion than being more careful working for people who are not legitimate themselves. But I could have helped if I knew about this earlier on. as i worked in a proper English training center before and they help all teachers to get proper visa. I don’t know the whole process, I was just a teacher assistant. but all the foreign teachers there are legally hired and paid. I feel so sorry for what happened to you! If you still have interest in coming back to China I can contact the school and my old workmates there to check out the hiring process for you. This is not a red flag I swear everything.

All great advice. Actually, because there are so many different types of scams in China involved in all varying aspects of living life (no scam is the same as the other), one of the most important things you mentioned is that if it does happen you'll be ok, you'll learn from it, you'll move on, you mustn't let it define you or affect what you want to do or let it tarnish your experiences with one brush. It's hard not to feel embarrassed about it or annoyed that one didn't see it happening but the reality is that life scams happen to millions of people all over the world in all cultures. Scammers can be very convincing and clever at gaining trust and it's our human nature in wanting to trust and believe. The great thing is that people who have gone through it can warn and educate others - and this is most certainly what you are doing which is great. Scamming will never stop but knowledge and research is the greatest weapon to avoid them.

100% agree with you. Scammers are clever and that's why it's hard to tell when you are being scammed even if it might seem so obvious to someone else. Thanks for your support Monro!

Dear Poppy, I know it's been a while since you posted this but, Thank you so much for sharing this and the previous video. I have had very similar experience teaching and being scammed, however, not in china, but IN THE NETHERLANDS, by a foreigner who's BRITISH. It's the same kind of BS with me quitting and not getting any paycheck for the previous work done. Hearing you talk about what you went through made me feel so much less alone and less hurt -- we were trusting and just wanted to do the right thing but there are people who are not like us. Luckily as the world goes, these horrible experiences may put us back on a track that's actually right for us, like you discovering what you really love and me deciding to work in healthcare. I just wanted to tell you that you are so brave and strong going through all of this and that please keep being you, having a good heart and believing in the goodness in the world. Those people who intentionally hurt us, we are NOT LIKE THEM. Thank you so much for this video, it really encouraged me!!! Best of luck on your journey wherever you are, and don't stop doing what you love! 💜

The lack of law to protect workers in China is what enables this to happen. And why is having a TH-cam channel a threat. Again lack of transparency in the country’s judicial system would lead the kinds of veiled threats the guy made even remotely credible.
Keep up the great work on your channel Poppy. I’ll watch the ad just to support your adventures.

I'm very sorry that you had to go through to those traumatic experiences in China.... I've been living here in China for 8 years and a teacher as well and I've heard stories similar to this. The only advice I can say is do your research well , make sure that the agency has a good reputation and the school that they are sending you to work for is a reputable school too.. read you contract properly before signing anything and if in doubt don't sign anything... or don't go through agencies at all, look for direct hiring right away... going through agencies is more expensive anyways that being hired directly from a school...

I am a Chinese. I am quite curious why these foreign kids did no research of Chinese employment rules before they come here. If I go to work in U.S. with a tourism visa, I will be deported by the immigration department. The first thing to go to work abroad is to get a working visa and contract. This is the common sense. And in China we also pay income tax and social insurance. If you have any problem with your employer, go to arbitration in Department of Labor resources. You can also apply for legal aid. Follow the law here even if you westerners dont respect our Chinese laws. And last but not least, there is no free lunch in the world, be mature, kids.

It sounds like you're a friendly and trustworthy person with a cool personality, And yes I agree that it's a GOOD idea to stay away from an Internet war as there's no winners, Kinda like a nuclear war, And as far as you telling your unfortunate experiences, You did a GREAT job, Kinda like a dam that released tons of pressure in a controlled and forthright matter. And yes we all heard that experiences, positive or negative happen for a reason, Yet it leaves one wondering from time to time why ? ? And I'm happy that you haven't given up on Mankind, Cheers for you and your boyfriend, Wishing you the best ! And keep on trucking, Al

If you have a legitimate work permit in China and don't get paid for your work per contract, go to the police for assistance. Another way is to contact your consulate of the city you're staying, if there's one, or the ambassy in capital Beijing. In this way it'd alert the higher level of the Chinese government and something will be done.

FYI to everyone working in China. Quitting penalties are non enforceable in China, and everyone has the right to give 30 days notice and quit. Threaten to / contact the labour authorities in your province if your employer does not cooperate with the law. You also can call the cities government hotline, and they often have English speaking assistants who can help you.
