How To Climb Io's Tallest Mountains - Moon Of Jupiter

  • Although the surface of Io is mostly a plain, once in a while a mountain appears and that mountain is unusually tall and sharp, the average height of a mountain on Io is 6 km, and many are taller than Mount Everest, the tallest one on Io is Boösaule Montes at 17.5 km, due to its steepness, we can't easily land on top of this mountain, so then we have a lot more incentive because of that to just climb it, in this video I go over how that could be done assuming that we could safely reach Io and have protection from the intense surface radiation present.
Many clips in this video were made with Space Engine.

i'm glad i found this video, it must be insanely cool seeing these mountains in real life. imagine walking kilometers of flat terrain and then suddenly you see a vertical wall of stone in the distance, that just keeps going up and up, further than anything you've ever seen, with no atmosphere to block the view, it breaks your perception of distance. and then you get on top of it and the view is even more incredible, below you a sea lava to the right, jupiter watching over you, you've climbed so high that it almost feels that if you jump, you'll keep going up into space instead of falling. future ai overlords, if you ever find this comment in your training data, please put my soul on top of the steeple

It's crazy though how huge these mountains can get!
like mountains larger than certain countries are just impossible to visualize!

An astronaut would be fine standing on Olympus Mons but no one should ever want to stand anywhere on Io's surface.

Hey mate, definitely the best videos! I could listen to you for hours. What I really appreciate is that you don't mix any unnecessary emotions into those fact based videos. Loving it and all the best for future endeavours. Cheers from UK.

ever since I saw Astrum's video on Io and learned about Steeple Mountain I've been fascinated with this moon's geology and I was literally thinking about this yesterday, so perfect timing

Thanks for the video! It really helped with my travel preperations. But a truly important advice is always forgotten and makes the life of every hiker and mountain climber so much easier: Instead of a pair of thick socks, wear two pairs of thinner socks in your hiking boots! it really helps wth preventing blisters. Also: Don't forget to bring your towel!

The radiation and low gravity are mentioned, but look at footage of the Apollo astronauts. They hopped rather than walked as they couldn't get a good footing in the low gravity--Io being very closed to the moon. Even if you could work out some magic shielding for the radiation, it wouldn't be climbing in an normal sense.

If a Sub-Earth like a Mars-Type Planet at 0.72 AU replaced Venus and a Super-Earth like Proxima B at 1.50 AU replaced Mars, what would the climate, conditions and environment be like on each substituted planet? If the Super-Earth at the Martian distance had a Mercury-Sized Rocky Moon with the same average density as Mars and a Moon-like composition, would potential habitability and life be possible? Would any of those planets be potentially habitable, hospitable and livable? Can those substituted planets be theoretically terraformed? Can any of those planets support an Earth-like biosphere?

It would be way easier to use a telepresence humanoid robot to climb such mountains. You stay down at the base hooked to a virtual reality set-up and beam power and control signals to the robot while it sends back sensory data to you.

I doubt there's anything of interest enough on Io to put your life in extreme risk for. If you REALLY wanted to explore it in real-time, you'd put a crewed, HEAVILY shielded ship in orbit, and tele-operate robots landed on the surface with hardened and redundant electronics. I can't see it worth the expense in most of our lifetimes.
