    I-376 / I-279 through the Ft. Pitt tunnel into Pittsburgh. Amazing overview of downtown Pittsburgh and it's emphasized by being confined in the tunnel and then...boom.

    We drove I-10 through New Orleans, on our way to California, during Mardi Gras in 1989 and I have never seen so many drunk drivers. A flatbed truck with a couch tied on the back passed us doing 55mph. Two dudes were sitting on that couch with a pony keg in between them and they were pumping that keg and drinking from the tap. Beer was flying behind them as they sped off towards downtown. Crazy times….. Your videos are great and I hope you make more.

    The I-71/75 NB into Cincinnati is my fave. I'm biased b/c I'm from there, but I never get tired of seeing the Cincy skyline as you go through what we call the "Cut in the Hill". I also like the NB I-75/I-85 in Atlanta. You are correct, the I-20 into Birmingham is newly re-opened. Here's one you might consider-- I-4 EB from downtown Orlando to Altamonte Springs. They just widened the road with some toll express lanes. Very nice, although, downtown Orlando is still a nightmare/

    I take 71/75 in northern Kentucky everyday. It does have impressive city views northbound but unfortunately the traffic is usually rough and it’s very dangerous with the tight turns. Alot of semi’s have overturned here. Personally I like 75 north through Michigan, specifically over the Mackinac bridge into to Upper Peninsula. Love the channel Mike!

    The only time I'll drive through Atlanta is in the middle of the night. I've actually driven up to NC to get on I-40 just to avoid driving through Atlanta and all that follows west bound on I-20. And I used to drive up the route of I-26 north of Asheville as they were building it. Old US 23 had some awesome views of the construction.

    NYC metro area is chock-full of scenic parkways. My personal favorites are CT-15 Merritt Parkway in Connecticut, Palisades Interstate Parkway from the GWB interchange in Fort Lee NJ to Bear Mountain in NY (and then onto US-6 across Bear Mountain) and Taconic State Parkway east of the Hudson River from NYC to Albany NY. Robert Moses loved his parkways.
    Hell, even I-87 New York State Thruway from Mario Cuomo Bridge to Albany NY provides some gorgeous scenery.

    As a frequent driver on Atlanta's Downtown Connector, I find its inclusion a bit amusing since I almost never find it that devoid of traffic, especially northbound. I do agree with I-26 crossing the Tennessee/North Carolina border; a good place to enjoy the view when not driving is the N.C. Welcome Center on the eastbound/southbound side. Another good downtown view, if you ever get out there, is I-5 northbound heading towards downtown Seattle. But the best highway view I've ever seen in North America was heading westbound on the Trans-Canada Highway from Calgary into the Canadian Rockies. I was listening to Dvorak's "New World" Symphony on a cassette at the time, and the music was a perfect match for the breathtaking view!

    Great vid Mike! Great choices! I’ve done every road on your list!
    More good choices, for various reasons:
    -City views: I-95 SB from Aventura to Miami/Brickell end.
    -City Views: Dan Ryan NB approaching Chicago
    -Scenic: I-70 Denver WB to I-15; canyons, Colorado River, Moab
    -Scenic: I-90 Missoula to Spokane; mountains, curvy sections, lake Coeur d’Alene
    -Scenic: I-84 WB from Ontario, OR to Portland; arid mountains, curvy stretches, Blue Mountain/Umatilla forest, Colombia river & Mt Hood
    -Scary: Bostons Big Dig Tunnel in a semi-truck; max clearance 13’6”, swear you’re gonna get stuck
    Could go on forever…..

    Interstate 99 from Bedford PA to State College PA has some beautiful Mountain views. Route 15 between Williamsport and the NY state line is a pretty drive as well. Interstate 81 north of 80 in Wilkes Barre/Scranton and interstate 84 heading East to the NY State line are worthy drives. Interstate 80 around the Delaware Water gap area and interstate 70 from the Maryland line north to Breezewood are great too. PA is just a beautiful place😃

    Induced demand on the Katy freeway,... as a civil engineer also that lives in Houston, what many of the critics of Katy Freeways expansion which was completed in 2008 failed to take into account is that it was built with the belief that the Houston metro ares will grow approximately at the same rate it had been growing. However, between 2010 and 2020, the US Census Bureau recorded 1.1 million new Houston area residents. That is beyond any estimates of expected growth. Opponents call it induced demand, which means traffic that was on arterial roads switch to the freeway, but that is just not what happened in Houston. There are not enough arterial roads to add 1 million new drivers/passengers onto 1 freeway. The biggest flaws of the Katy Freeway are that accurate growth estimates were not available (multiple studies were done by TXDOT and other stakeholders) and that since there was so much widening of the physical land and infrastructure, they should have allowed some type of easement or right of way for future commuter rail or other meaningful mass transit system, as Houston is the largest city in the nation without train service to its airport or region-wide light rail or regional rail services.

    • @MileageMikeTravels
      @MileageMikeTravels  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m glad you brought that up. I totally agree that when people criticize the Katy they ignore the crazy growth in Houston. Looking back even 30 years you guys have added over 4 million people to the metro. That’s incredible growth that no engineer or planner could predict.
      I did find it odd that Houston didn’t have any rail service. Is that something that they have planned or are they still just focusing on highways for now?

    • @TexMexTraveler
      @TexMexTraveler 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MileageMikeTravels Houston like a lot of Texas is still very much roads and freeways focused. We also have a fairly weak regional transportation committee (since every regional needs one per federal DOT money rules lol), its called HGAC, and it is dominated by suburbanites. In the past when the city or county took up consideration of meaningful rail services, it failed, mainly du to the build time and not being able to see the fruits of the money spent in any real time frame that is in sync with elections. And like most other places we have the NIMBY problem as well. There are currently NO plans being considered by HGAC, city of Houston or Harris County to develop and build any rail service to the airport or throughout the metro area. The 10 year funding plan has been set as of July 2022, it consists of over 30 billion just for the Houston area, but none for rail or other fast meaningful public transit.
      --- It's nice to run into another engineer, and I share you passion for freeways, logistics of public infrastructure and more.

    Hello Mileage Mike,
    I share your love of the open road, and have been on all those highways except I-10 through Houston. I agree with your #1. Even though it takes 3 hours to get from Homestead to Key West on 1, it's good to just decompress and enjoy the scenery and appreciate the engineering that built the highway.
    I was a commercial driver for four years, and made it into all of the lower 48 states. One that surprised me was southwest New York. I-86, the Southern Tier Expressway, starts at Erie, PA and heads east through Jamestown, Bath, Elmira, Corning, and Binghamton. Rolling hills and gentle curves all the way. I made that trip again last weekend, and the fall colors were impressive. To extend the beautiful drive, you could get on I-88 at Binghamton and take it up to Albany.

    Good afternoon my good friend Mike !! Another great video. Thank you so much for featuring these scenic highway rides and my favorite drive would be I-40 Asheville NC in the fall when fall is making its presence quite known Have you done a drive on the Blue Ridge parkway ? I’f not, I highly suggest you do that drive as it would be a quite scenic drive . It begins in the NC mountains and ends in upstate Virginia(western Virginia). in the Shenandoah mountains I believe. - it’s about 450 miles (give or take a few miles). October would be perfect as the fall leaves on the mountains are displaying such breathtaking scenic views. I highly recommend this drive for those reasons . Great choices in this video !! Me and my daddy are native Georgians - born & raised in the peach state and are well familiar with the horrific Atlanta traffic . The best time to go through the downtown connector would be 2 or 3 am (the middle of the night) -same holds true for 285 . Engineers have been discussing how to alleviate Atlanta traffic for years, and one of their sensible proposals was to build an outer. perimeter around 285 but that plan failed and unsure whether or not this proposal is still on the drawing board, but I feel that this proposal isn’t the solution. Excuse my lengthy comment Mike and I enjoy watching your wonderful videos so keep up the great work. and be safe. 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂👍👍👍👍

    For me, I-85 is the best highway anywhere; rarely have issues driving through the Charlotte, Triad and Triangle areas; I take 85 everyday going to work and I’d take it over I-40 anyway. I-885 east end connector might make it more congested in the near future since it’s opening this past summer.

    • @westkana
      @westkana 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In NC, I-85 is very well built, but once you go south/west of Charlotte it has incredibly heavy traffic (for a rural interstate) and lots of trucks slowing things down to a (relative) crawl. Northern South Carolina & North Georgia are especially bad with this problem where 85 goes down to just 2 lanes having to accommodate all that traffic. SC is at least expanding it (although taking forever to do so)

    • @w-josh
      @w-josh ปีที่แล้ว

      @@westkanaGeorgia has a long period of I-85 being 4 lanes in each direction from Exit 47 (Newnan, GA) to I-285, I-85 is 3+ lanes all the way from Exit 35 & I-85 is being expanded North of Atlanta just not far enough. I’ve always thought that all interstates on the east coast should be three travel lanes. The region is growing so fast, and Atlanta’s metro expands super far out.

    Interstate 17 in Arizona is one of my personal favorites. You have to do the drive both northbound and southbound to get the full experience. Plenty of crazy drivers but little traffic on weekdays makes it an easy drive most of the time.

    IMHO, this video should be titled the top five highway drives in America's Southeast. I agree with your top pick and it's the only one I've driven on your list and would definitely make my top five. If you come out west, here would be my top five (West of the Rockies and not including national parks): 5) CA Highway 1 from Oxnard to Malibu (both day time and sunset drives are worth noting) | 4) I15 between Littlefield and St. George | 3) Highway 128 and Highway 1 from Cloverdale to Fort Bragg (wineries, redwoods, rivers and the ocean) | 2) I80 (west bound) from Oakland to San Francisco over the Bay Bridge | 1) I70 from Denver to Grand Junction (I can't believe they build a freeway here -- just amazing). If you are including national parks, then include Highway 180 from Minkler to Kings Canyon (Road's End) -- Highway 41 from Fish Camp to Yosemite Valley (the Tunnel View is something else) -- Highway 120 from Lee Vining to Yosemite Valley -- and my favorite Highway 9 from Mt. Carmel Junction to Zion National Park visitor's center.

    Give me the rural, mountain roads anytime. I know you haven't filmed out west yet, but the obvious Best of the Best is I-70 from Denver to I-15. We really enjoyed US-50 in Nevada last summer. US-48 across West Virginia is also very nice, and much of it is 4-lane.

    I've not driven all of I-26 but I like the WV Turnpike I-77. Especially the Beckley-Charleston section despite it being lowered to 60 mph. Most do 70 anyways. There's a love hate relationship with I-376 entering Pittsburgh PA. Huge traffic jams entering the tunnel but the reward is a great view of downtown Pittsburgh as soon as you exit the tunnel. But the exits to town are a nightmare. The best I've been on ever was I-70 from Denver to Glenwood Springs. You have stunning scenery entering the mountains, climb to 11,000 ft, go through the Eisenhower tunnel, more mountains descending and past Vail, and enter Glenwood Canon, an engineering marvel with the Colorado River, both directions of interstate, and railroad tracks snaking their way through a stunning narrow red walled gorge. Finally the view opens up as you get to Glenwood Springs. Third best to me might be I-24 from Nashville down to Chattanooga, TN. Very scenic and curvy sections especially towards Chattanooga

    I271 from i90 to i480 is an example of how express lanes should be built.
    US83 between Oakley and Scott City, or KS23 between Gove City and Shields, cross the Smoky Hill River. It's 15-20 miles driving from one side of the valley to the other.
    83 has the Keystone gallery, little Jerusalem badlands park, and chalk monuments.
    US14 from Pierre to Wall, SD. No gas for the first 65 miles. Lots of sunflowers and grass, then you notice a ridge off to your left. I90 runs at the base of almost a cliff, it turns from northwest to west at the 14 junction and climbs the ridge to Wall.
    There were several things I wanted to get at Wall Drug. But I could not find the rooms they were in. Yeah, I lost a few rooms inside Wall Drug.
    NE71/CO71. From the Ogallala national grassland, Toadstool geological park, and Fort Robinson near Crawford, it climbs up to pass the Belmont tunnel. After the highway 2 split and it turns south again, it starts crossing dry, rocky ridges into Scottsbluff County, where you can begin to see the monument, straight as an arrow all downhill for about 15 miles. There's the monument, a museum at the base, a small zoo, and the Wildcat Hills state recreation area, and it starts looking like a southwestern highway with long drags to the top of the next ridge. In Colorado it runs across the Pawnee national grassland.
    US17 from Ridgeland to Hardeeville, SC. The trees have grown together over the highway like a tunnel.

    i10 as a whole between san Antonio to NOLA is by far the biggest pain in the ass i have ever experienced. During my time as an industrial delivery driver in houston ive had to make the drive to NOLA and Elpaso many times, in one case ive driven the full length of i10 in texas 4 times in 2 days. as much as i loved not having to change freeways at all on those routes, the pain and suffering it causes in its streches in columbus tx (construction), beaumont tx, (construction), orange, tx/sulfur, la (construction) and baton rouge, la (construction) is just draining having to deal with heavy backups on those streches on any consistent basis.

    Interstate 10 is actually my favorite interstate highway

  • @MrWage
    @MrWage 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I remember the Katy freeway (I-10 in Houston) before it was widened. It was actually 3 lanes in each direction and it *badly* needed to be rebuilt. No merge lane was pretty common at entrances as well as backups from signals at cross streets just after the exit, you would seriously encounter traffic from 7 am to 7 pm every day including weekends. That being said I think it did induce some demand, but what is more egregious is how they built and manage the center HOT/Express lanes. Those lanes need to be rebuilt to have entrance/exits that completely bypass the main lanes, either by ramps or T intersections, as well as dynamic pricing to really ration the road space for buses and HOV vehicles imo (this also includes a HOV lane to/from I-610 to downtown).

    • @delorbb2298
      @delorbb2298 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like that the HOV is open in both directions at the same time. My issue, since you didn’t ask, 😂 is that the HOV lane is on the left, the fast lane, while the toll is on the right. I don’t want to drive as fast as some of those fools, so I drive on the right. But then I have to switch to left when going through the toll plaza. Talk about nerve racking.

    • @MrWage
      @MrWage 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@delorbb2298 I think the only way to fix that is to have those lanes operate like the DFW area express lanes where you must preregister your trip, no weaving near plazas needed after that.

    • @delorbb2298
      @delorbb2298 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrWage nah. They should just switch up the neon sign at the toll plazas. People who pay tolls usually want to go faster. So switch the sign on the left to say toll and the one one right to say HOV. Too often slow moving cars have to quickly switch to the left lane (fast lane) just to be in the correct lane when hitting the plaza cameras. They can easily switch up the signs as they are mechanical. Hell, they manage to change both signs to toll everyday at 11 am.

    • @MrWage
      @MrWage 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@delorbb2298 They have the signs the way they are because of the enforcement booths in the median. A preregistration system cuts down on costs though as you no longer have to pay someone to sit in the booth.

    • @delorbb2298
      @delorbb2298 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrWage There was never anyone in those booths. The toll roads, yes. But never in the HOV lanes. I stand by my comment. The HOV lane on the Katy Freeway has two lanes each, inbound and outbound. One lane for those with a toll tag and the other for those with 2+ passengers. The HOV lane is to the left (fast lane) and the toll lane is to the right.
      It should be reversed, because toll drivers almost always drive too fast. Put those idiots in the fast lane and leave the rest of us in the slower lanes. You can ride the HOV from 5am to 11am. After that, someone at Metro headquarters clicks a few keys on their computer to make both lanes toll. So it’s not like it would be difficult.
      Perhaps they think it would be hard because so many people are used to the current way. I just hate having to change lanes so that I go through the HOV side when toll people are going 80+ in that lane. I’m usually going 65, BUT THAT’S NOT FAST ENOUGH FOR THESE IDIOTS! Sorry for shouting. 😂

    I am surprised that I-20 Birmingham took honorable mention for your list.
    I was just about to blurt out I-71 / 75 through Northern Kentucky into Cincinnati, before you also gave this stretch an honorable mention. I feel as if Pittsburgh and Cincinnati are both very underrated for highway infrastructure. On that note, I would also add I-376 into Downtown Pittsburgh.
    Besides that, I am surprised that you have not driven CA 1 Pacific Coast Highway. I have driven CA 1 between Malibu and San Clemente. Beautiful drive.
    I do think that I like I-40 better than I-26, though. I have driven both often between North Carolina and Chicago.
    Others off the top of my head:
    I-95 NJ Turnpike from I-278 to GW Bridge: Industry, Newark Airport, Manhattan Skyline, etc.
    I-90 / 94 Kennedy Expressway - O'Hare to Loop: Great views of Chicago skyline, especially if you exit at Ohio - Ontario feeder ramps.
    I-278 Brooklyn - Queens Expressway - Belt Parkway Verrazano through Brooklyn Promenade
    CT 15 Merritt Parkway
    Ontario 401 - Toronto
    Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway, Lake Shore Drive, Storrow Drive, West Side Highway, etc.

Use to go down to bottom of hill and was a fairly sharp curve and that point you would see skyline. The problem was that traffic would always bog down slowing at that sharp curve. KY DOT completely removed the hill to your left that up until 2000 blocked view of skyline
