Danke! ... wundervoll Bruno Walter: vertraut, vital und spontan & Mildred Miller hingebungsvoll einfühlsam
Ach! What a recording! Walter's interpretation perfectly captures the changes in mood--hopefulness, disillusion, despair, grief, and finally, a solemn acceptance of life's disappointments.
And likewise, Mildred Miller's singing is everything it can be; she completely inhabits the soul of the wayfairer, who in the fourth movements, asks his lover who has forsaken him, "warum ( why?) with just the right amount of emphasis, but not too much.
Finally, the last line or so sums up the wayfarer's parting thoughts on his experience:
Alles! Alles, Lieb und Leid
Und Welt und Traum!
I have sometimes theorized that the fourth movement impliied that the wayfarer committed suicide, i.e., as a release from his despair, but I've never read anything offering this view, so perhaps I am wrong. Still, it is Mahler...
Meravigliosoooo!!!
