    You could improve the bass if you hooked the new drivers up, out of phase with the big single driver.
    Just switch the polarity from + to - so that when the big driver pushes out, the smaller drivers are pulled in, and when the big driver is pulled in, the smaller drivers are pushed out.
    Right now they are all fighting each other to compress the air inside the unit.

    • @arvis3run
      @arvis3run 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I would not suggest that cause they'll cancel each other out. What you have now is seald box. Changing polarity in this way is like plunging 2 different speakers out of phase and waiting for good results, but in realty they're gonna cancel each other out. Just look at bass driver, it needs enclosure cause there are 2 sides of speaker and without shaping the phase with box one side will cancel out the other.

  • @humboldtoregonian9400

    The speakers need to be wired up in series. By wiring them in parallel, your lowering the ohms, increasing stress on the amp, and increasing the low end filter with the lower ohms. It would work best if the side speakers had twice the impedance of the original; so that, they could be wired in parallel with the intent of replacing the original driver. I guess in the end, more research could have made your first try so much better. Thumbs up for entertainment!

    - Carefully. When you connect 3 Drivers to each other in a parallel order, the final impedance decreases radically. If you use the modified Charge 4 at high volume for longer time you can kill (burn) its amplifier. - You lost bass, because the box space decreased behind the driver when you replaced the Radiators with fixed drivers (and those also require box space).

      @@dbermont of course the phase is also important because if a speaker is out of phase (wrong connection, positive and negative is confound) it will not make bass. If on driver is connected wrong, it will move in, when the other drivers move out, so the speaker can not create pressure which is needed for bass.

    For more bass (I know bass isn't all that matters, but it's fun), you'd have to extend the ends of the enclosure and add larger passive raditors. There'd be a bit of trial and error (or maybe calculation if you're smarter than me), to get the right resonance from the larger PR. More surface area tends to mean better efficiency (or dB/W), which these portable speakers really benefit from. Hope yourself or someone else does this, I'd be really interested in the results.

  • @narendrairengbam112
    @narendrairengbam112 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow, what a creative project. I thought it would sound louder because of the 3 drivers but the bass would decrease considerably due to the lack of PRs but hey, the bass also increased considerably along with the volume. Nice. Speaker companies should start adopting this technique on their new products. Nice job.

  • @AMIGA79
    @AMIGA79 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    What i think before the soundcheck was even the result in the Soundcheck: Way more open mids, but the Bass can not completely compensate the movement from the membranes. The original passive radiators do that, but now the air pressure works against the flip-drivers and they produces air movement too. So it’s normal to get small interferences, the bass can’t work correctly. Also the overall tuning doesn’t fit any more.
    For me the Charge and also the Flip are not really good speakers. A mix if both don’t make it better. JBL has to tune the Speakers better, that should be no Problem because the hardware is ok. So if JBL would simply change the sound signature i would give them a chance. So many fans say that the bass on the JBLs is great, but it’s not. Bass and hights is all you hear, but both not well defined, not strong. The Charge looses in Mids and Stage. The Flip looses in harsh metallic hissing hights and thin bass at higher levels. So it makes no sense to mix that.
    Very interesting video and i really like and enjoy your comparisons, but pity about the time invested in this test project. ✌🏻

    It would have more bass if you hooked up the small drivers out of phase with the large one. Having them in phase creates more pressure to work against, but out of phase, the pressure should be more equal because as the top speaker retracts the outside ones expand, allowing more travel on the driver and more bass. It would be hard to get the bass as good as the passive drivers though.

    Its actually reverse thinking, it hurts a speaker more to under power it then it does overpower it..huge misconception..also this would have worked it you found a way to make the flip drivers out of phase with the main driver..but what it comes down to is not having the wattage distribution the main driver took a certain amount of wattage, and you add two more drivers to that they will be underpowered regardless of them only being 5 watts, just because you have 30watts on a unit, adding drivers doesn't give all of them 30 watts...you would need to separate the 3 drivers into 3 channels...a LCR configuration would be ideal but really just give you surround basically a little soundbar.. awesome video buddy 👍 was fun watching, your mod actually looked really great

    Also, I see everyone talking about how before it had deeper bass, and this isn’t true, it’s the same speakers but with a passive radiator, it acts as a turbo charger for the lower frequency, extending the bass frequency on the speaker, so yes it sounds better, but in reality it’s all pushing the same bass (for people who don’t know what a passive radiator is) this is why when u turn up the volume the deep seems to go away. The passive radiators are supposed to deepen the bass at lower levels say 20-30hz per say

    If Jbl replaced their prs with actual drivers, they could tune the replaced prs (now drivers) with bass and the front speakers with only mids and treble. You also must take into account that the Passive Radiators are much larger than the drivers used to replace the PRs. Also another thing to remember is is that a passive radiator moves in the opposing direction of the active driver therein. While replacing the PRs with an active set of drivers means that all cone area is moving in the same direction while it's built to have a type of amplification of air movement inside the enclosure from the PRs moving in the opposite direction. Plus all speaker were in parallel which loads the internal amplifier more than it should be which causes distortion and clipping at lower volumes than normal.

      @@PhaQ2 I never said anything like that. And I know what you said.
      I try to explain it to you with examples.
      I've got an amplifier that puts out 50w RMS at 8ohms it handles putting out 100w RMS. So at 4ohms its fine. But at 2ohms it could potentially (theoretically) put out 200w which it doesn't handle. You understood?

    • @PhaQ2
      @PhaQ2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@derSkedda I getchya, but that's why I started this with, *You're not exactly right.*
      If your amp is 50 watts R.M.S. and peaks at 100 watts. There is no amount of impedance that will suddenly make your amp output 200 watt peak.
      All you're doing is allowing the amp to output peak power, easier. Increasing the chance of amp failure.

    The bass is bad because the air pressure can't escape anywhere which is why the original one has the passive radiators
    You can fix that by placing a rectangular or round or square passive radiator on the back and/or next to the big active driver
    Also plz like this comment so DLX sees this

    The idea of putting a passive radiator in a box that size is to make the little speaker sound like a much bigger woofer. Replacing the passive radiators with even smaller speakers will never improve the bass. It will sound louder but it will not sound deeper. A lot of engineering went into designing these type of speakers to put out the biggest amount of power and low frequency information. And yes, you will blow the amp sooner or later by attaching these extra speakers thus lowering the impedance and overheating the amplifier till it fries.

    I would assume that with the modified one, though, it won't sound good since air can't get out and move. It will compress inside and not allow the speakers to move as much, right?

  • @gregorybarron2203
    @gregorybarron2203 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    What’s happening is that air pressure from the main driver is used to power the passive radiators. Now that you have the flip drivers in it, the air pressure in the cabinet is trying to woof the flip drivers but the drivers themselves are trying to woof against the main driver. So what I would do is either cut power to the flip drivers or reverse the polarities to the flip drivers.

    You might consider adding some stuffing (cotton or poly fill) to tame the standing wave inside the module. Also, adding additional drivers to the internal amp will reduce total impedance which could damage the amp.
