Counting & Undefended Pieces | Climbing the Rating Ladder vs. freddi88 (1368)

  • In this continuation of the "Climbing the Rating Ladder" series I take on players of various ratings levels while pointing out typical mistakes and spots for improvement along the way (possibly my own!? :)). Here I commentate a 5+5 game against a player rated 1368 on Chess.com. My opponent keeps the central tension against the French Defense (1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5) and establishes a slight space advantage. However, with 10.d5? White miscounts the number of attackers and defenders. #Chess #ChessInstruction #ClimbingTheRatingLadder

    John, you're working wonders for lower rated players with these lessons, even if it means sacrificing a few of them over the board ;)

    As someone who never has a chance to catch John live streaming on twitch, every time I get the alert that another “climbing the rating ladder” has dropped, I take a second to pray to the chess Gods... “please let this be a long upload with multiple games...” ;) Alas, I open TH-cam and the bitter sweet realization sets in, as I’m stoked at seeing a new game, but always left wanting more... Seinfeld would be proud.

    Do you guys also sometimes get this feeling like John is one of your friends, even though you never met?
    Watching these videos every day for a extended period of time really make you feel like you somehow 'know' him.

      @@thecityofjoy I am merely stating that watching a lot of content by the same person can play this trick on your mind. It's the same with binge watching a TV series, you somehow feel connected to the characters. It's a _comment_ on how this video makes me feel. How is the _comment_ section of this video not the right forum for it? Also, this is a public space... why do you feel like you are entitled to tell others what does and does not belong here?

    It's amazing though, how alpha zero refuses to play the french defence at all after only a few hours of self training. And here we are stuck not knowing how to really crush it like alpha does, so we continue to play it...

    • @vga1232

    He played pretty well for his rating. He developed his pieces efficiently, got castled, and didn't drop any material for a while.

    • @nickjohnson8495
      @nickjohnson8495 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Played well for his rating? He’s a 1370 and completely disregarded his bishop on move 22 like he was an 800.

    • @michaelholm4572
      @michaelholm4572 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @piggypigpig Well a lot of 1300's make a lot of unnecessary pawn moves in the opening, delay castling and/or create some kind of weakness in their position before move 10. This guy at least followed good opening principles. Sure he dropped a pawn but it's possible that he sacrificed it on purpose and just overestimated his chances with Qh5.

    • @michaelholm4572
      @michaelholm4572 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nickjohnson8495 No one is immune from blunders. Everyone hangs pieces from time to time, especially in blitz. I've even seen GMs hang Queens and Rooks for nothing in the Pro Chess League and those were rapid games.

    At 8:04, isn't Qd4 for black a bit more forcing? It makes white's previous bishop "development" useless, and if he doesn't want to lose a very important pawn on b2, the bishop must return. I think it's better to give up the pawn, but then it's game over, especially with like-colored bishops. These kind of forks should always be on our radar. Then again, it's easier to see when you're not playing!

      The Greek gift - John explains it after the game, it's where you take the pawn on h7 with a bishop sacrifice, and then follow it up with bringing your knight in with check and then your queen. Here's an intro level video on the greek gift: th-cam.com/video/LY928SzKRhQ/w-d-xo.html
