      It bottomed out the suspension. It was virtually impossible to land and keep riding after a flip like that, with the suspension configuration the bikes at that time were using. It's still amazing to watch considering there was no baseline for him to practice with, no video footage for him to study or reference, and no knowledge of how the suspension should be configured for that type of stunt.

      Just remember this was the first time it'd ever been done. Many said it was impossible since it'd bottom out the suspension of the bikes at the time, potentially causing severe injury to the wrists and spine since the impact might not be softened enough with the suspension bottoming out. So this is really as good as you could expect it to look at the time, especially with no baseline to go by or practice with.

    For all of you saying that Jose Yanez was the first one to backflip a motocross, you are absolutely right..
    It was pretty incredible back then and he absolutely deserves all the credits and recognitions for all of his bike and motorcycle exploits and i'm sure he was a huge inspiration for many after..
    HOWEVER he used to practice by jumping in a river and most of his stunts was for his job at the circus.. His famous landed backflip was on a 8' tall jump that he built himself while riding a 80cc..
    So yeah.. Almost 10 years later Carey Heart was the first who brought the backflip to a 250cc + while in a competition.
    He might have not landed perfectly but still.. The dude had huge fucking balls and he forever changed freestyle motocross that day. I mean once it happened there was no going back.. Half of the riders retired not long after and the other half had to step up their game real fast.
    He also deserves 100% credit for that and I'm tired of people who's trying to take that away from him. They both deserves credit.. It's called progression it's called improvement.

  • @jbdub08

    People now don’t realize; foam pits weren’t a thing back then. So if you wanted to learn a new trick on a dirt bike, you had three choices:
    1) set up a lake jump and learn it on a bmx bike first. Then try to translate that trick to a motocross bike
    2) fuck your dirt bike up over and over jumping it into a lake instead.
    2) Just fucking go for it on dirt.
    For Carey Hart to attempt this trick was completely insane, and it revolutionized the sport of freestyle mx forever. For years, no one though these kinds of tricks could actually be done on mx bikes. And he just said, piss on it. Imma go for it.

    that backflip set in motion in the immense pressures riders faced to perform. a lot of guys like Clifford Adoptane, Dane Kinard, disappeared, that flip, stopped freestyle motorcross being just a fun expression session, and the person who first did it in competition received so much backlash and just wouldn't wrap their head around that he would of never landed it as he fell from 3 stories and landed to flat. so they pressured him. and pressured him until he broke. he had a broken collarbone in the process of being repaired, he signed up for Xgames on the night. as he went up the ramp whick was 8ft of Vert his hand slipped off the bike he had to bail and fell that same 3 stories as in Gravity Games and took it straight to his body, and it went from yeah he's gonna finally do the backflip to a Son lying on the dirt barely moving and a Father crying. and a lot of people ended up like that

    10 years later people are throwing INSANE tricks with the DOUBLE BACK, doing unthinkable tricks doing FRONTS, and even have done a triple. WTF ;P

    At the start all the presenters sounds almost staged the way they were setting this up as some massive thing. But when I saw the reactions of his peers you knew it was a big deal.

    Caleb Wyatt was the first person to successfully land a backflip on a dirt bike I met him in 2004 at the X Games..... this was the first backflip that they say was successfully landed in competition but I don't call that successfully landed

    The first ever backflip was in 1991..jose yanez...way way before fmx..but this is the golden era of fmx..which is way cooler guys on a dirtbikes and carzy tricks.

    He also invented a new trick.... I'd call it the wave catcher. He looked like a surfer waiting for the tide to come in on a surf board after he landed lol

    Wow people thought a backflip was not possible. Travis Pastrana changed all that. So when are we gonna see a triple backflip it's only a matter of time😄👍

      Travis is attempting to do a triple now..look at nirto circus' new video

    • @phatone911
      @phatone911 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Teague Atkıns someone might land it a cpl times...but....like they say in the new Nitro Circus video...you have to go so hard...so damn high.....i think that if they continue pursuing that (and God forbid this to happen) there will be several people severely hurt or worse when they start trying it on sand/dirt/padded dirt/whatever.

    • @phatone911
      @phatone911 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Teague Atkıns Also....I believe either Travis STOPPED trying or is NOT trying this trick at all. He walked away from it. Due to so many concussions and whatever else....one more serious knock and he would be a (no disrespect to anyone) vegetable or worse.
