    FYI OLD MECHANICS TRICK on holding small pins, springs and balls in place during assembly.
    COAT THEM WITH JUST ENOUGH HEAVY GREASE TO KEEP THEM FROM MOVING OR FALLING OUT.
    The grease will melt away after a minute of operation due to pressure or heat.
    On "DIS" Assembly always disassemble on a large bath towel or beach towel, this keeps the small
    parts from rolling, sliding or bouncing of the table into the WTF regions of time and space.

    Thanks man! I know seeing a video like this can really give people the confidence to preform this repair. Likewise, it is assuring to know the parts really one cost a few bucks on these transaxles.

    You have the best delivery, so calm and easy-going. If it was me, I would have spent hours editing out bouts of cursing, tools throwing and, of course, crying. I like how honest you are about what you don't know too. But, at the same time, I always get the sense you'll figure it out and then show how you did it. That's not always the case on TH-cam. I agree with the poster who said you'd make an excellent teacher. Most watchable and informative videos I've seen on TH-cam. Really appreciate the effort. Now it's time to tackle my own.

    My JD L111 with T40 transaxle had the same problem as yours. Not difficult to drop the transmission and troubleshoot but getting parts took some calls to locate... First I called Tuff Torq (the OEM) and they said apologetically that JD would no longer permit them to sell direct to JD mower owners and that I needed to call JD parts support to find a local dealer. What a joke. As I feared, JD said the transaxle is "not user serviceable" and the only option is to replace with a new ($800+) unit. So...I went to the Tuff Torq website, set up an online account, located the needed parts (no catalog info for the T40 but plenty for the K46 version which is largely compatible), and placed my order! Bingo! Don't ask, don't tell. Just do it. I ordered the differential gear kit ($27.01), sealing cap ($3.59), filter ($10.72), and Tuff Tech hydraulic oil 3 liters ($29.93) and I'm back in business. Thanks for your great video!

    My latest and last ever John Deere has 100 hours on it. Mower deck bearing, 3 carburetors, charging diode pack, fuel line for (alcohol in gas), and now I am doing the hydro drive. I got a lemon for sure but I really appreciate your video. I bought a Yardman to do my lawn while JD gets fixed. Oh yeah, tires are always flat too. Keep the fix a flat in them just to use the piece of junk.

    Well done, good clear explanation. This video is a little over five years old. Have your neighbor check his Craftsman transmission. I have bought & picked up 5 Craftsman & they all had transmission issues. Cannot roll. Unfortunately none of them had a simple frozen brake or lever, linkage issue. They were all between 5 to 10 years old. I enjoy your channel.
    Stay well, Joe Z

    Excellent video,
    I am looking at a John Deere to play with and from what I've heard these Transaxle problems are why they get junked.
    The Deere I am looking at is up at the Dump. I might just use the engine on another tractor build in the future as I am currently putting together a Murry Yard Pro to Drive around town. Where I live is a Tiny Town and all I have to do is add Taillights and a horn to be Legal.
    I have people asking me to Fix things like small engines and appliances Bicycles wrecked vehicles all the time.
    We don't have a regular shop that does this kind of work here so it gives me something to do and it helps people here out.
    I guess you could say I am retired but someone always has something that they need help with.
    I enjoyed watching your video and I think you did great job putting this together. I'm sure other people will find it very
    Useful too.
    Thank You for posting this!

    I am confused regarding the oil. On video part 1, at 7:13 you indicate that tuff tuorq recommends 5w15 synthetic oil. On this video at 17:33 you mention you think it is 10w50 synthetic oil. Which is their recommendation?

    • @Barnehy1
      @Barnehy1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As per Tuff-Torq, the K46 Trans takes Synthetic 5w50. I use Castrol synthetic 5w50. I get it at my local parts store. Doublewide says that John Deere recommends 10w30. I dont know about what JD says. I just know what Tuff-Torq says.

    Very informative. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I've spent endless hours watching your videos as well as some others on small engine repair because I'm reinventing myself at 65 just to stay vital as well as starting a repair business of my own in Massachusetts. Is there a good single source for specs on small engines i.e. torque data, compression readings and valve settings etc.? Also where is a good source for parts? Thanks again for what you do.

    Thanks for the wonderful video, I have the same gearbox in our lawn mower, that started making strange noises just before starting up, I broke down the gears and could not find anything, except that behind the two springs (in this video time 5:28) there is no bullet, I got 2 bullets, and lo and behold, the machine is running, but upside down, when I push the pedal forward, it runs backwards, and when I press the pedal backward, it runs forward. No ball is shown on your video, do you need a ball in there? Can this also hang together with the direction of rotation? I have no other explanation for that.

    • @tallokie67
      @tallokie67 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I made the same mistake too. If the forward/reverse is backwards when your done you put the wedge upside down. Apparently some go together with the fat side up and some, like mine, go fat side down. There's mention of it in the parts schematic too.

    my troy built garden way just quit right in the middle of mowing today, I tried to engage the forward knob but it wont engage feels real spongy does not want to go into gear, is this maybe the same problem as you are doing here? its about 10 years old, what causes the hydrostatic trans to go out,

  • @andrecampbell691

    Over heating these hydro transaxles by towing heavy rollers or by not keeping it clean around the cooling fan will really shorten its life, or by using the wrong oil like JD do.

    Hi everyone. I’m currently tinkering around with this transmission and am wondering if there’s anyway to test the pump and motor? My don’t seem bad but my lawn mower would stop moving after about an hour until it cooled down again.. No visual damage. Pistons still tight in housing..

    Hey can you help me troubleshoot my mower? Its a mid engine 12.5 craftsman with a peerless hydro transmission model 2000. My issue is it drives fine in reverse but will barely move forward or not at all. I dont know if the issue is in the transaxle or the pump. Do you know if the gear that connects to the transaxle just spins or also moves in and out. If it only spins can I assume the issue is in the transaxle?

      Not true.
      This Tuff Torque K46 is about $800 on Amazon as of now.
      If you catch things early just new 5w/50 Synthetic oil & clean filter is enough.
      Wait too long to Service it needs parts.

    Dude just to clarify a pump is a pump a motor runs on electricity and an engine runs on internal combustion you can't run an electric motor while submerged in any kind of liquid cause it will short circuit

      Not true friend. Every fuel pump today is mounted and immersed in the fuel. They are of course electric.
