Being brave is not about not having fear... it's about making the choice to overcome it. He always knew deep inside that he wasn't particularly skilled or strong, yet when he was the one man standing between innocent and foe, he chose to fight. He usually failed, but at least he tried.
He even showed it to Hercules and Iolaus on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys when the crowd in "When A Man Loves A Woman" was bent on touch Serena while Herc and Iolaus defended her (meaning all three men stood up for her)!
