None of them are Claire Torrey, but there are other live performances which feature Claire. This for me is the best live version available, second only to Claire's original studio improv performance. I love watching your gut reactions to all of Pink Floyd's great music, especially the live ones. As a PF fan for 50 years, it's really satisfying to see young people discover these timeless gems. Another great reaction by you! Glad to be a subscriber!
Truth is (IMO), Clare was never able to come close to reproducing her studio version. The one youtube video of her doing it w/Floyd live is almost painful to watch. Them using these trio of backing singers on tour was a great choice by the band...great performance.
By far the best version th-cam.com/video/sxo0OJkbaMY/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=sbrenn second best version th-cam.com/video/J3xc5H_N8ds/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=MobyDick00001 enjoy
The video of Clare performing this at Knebworth in 1990 is ok but nothing close to what she did in the studio. I like seeing different singers tackle this, they’re all a little different. I was not expecting a male vocalist doing it on Gilmour’s last tour but it was good. We all will die in our own way with our own voices
This song is about the raw emotions of transitions into leaving life, stages of dying, anger, fear, resistance and acceptance, extremely powerful indeed.
The first female vocalist is Sam Brown. You could check out some stuff from The Delicate Sound of Thunder, the live concert tour that came before this one - personally I think it has a better version of GGITS. Also, fly back in time and see them do Echoes live at Pompeii, you'll love it 😁.
The woman on the right is Durga McBroom. The first vocalist (blonde) is Sam Brown. Lorelei McBroom is the other one, I believe. Clare Torrey was the vocalist on the studio version of GGITS in '73. Remember, the Pulse show was in '94. They all sound amazing.
All of the singers had serious solo careers doing soul, R&B and jazz vocals. It took all three to deliver something worthy of Claire Torrey's original, but they did it. Wonderful reaction.
Rachel fury did the first verse on delicate sound of thunder and crushed it as well, Durga backed up that tour as well and another singer Margaret Taylor.
'Echoes' live at Pompeii is a must, it seems unbelievable it's been fifty years since that iconic performance. Dave Gilmour (guitar), Richard Wright (piano/organ), Nick Mason (drums) and Roger Waters (bass) are the lineup at Pompeii, they all performed at Pulse except Roger Waters.✌
"Echoes" Live at Gdansk" Last time played which Dave said he will not ever play again with the passing of Rick Wright ( keyboard and wrote a lot of the music)
As others have mentioned, the blonde singer is Sam Brown. Sam was a POP solo artist at the time of this concert and actually had a #1 hit in the UK. She has several albums out and is respected in the UK as a POP icon. She developed some polyps on her vocal cords that required an operation and as result lost her ability to sing! How sad is that!! She still remains optimistic and in good spirits. Class act!
So at Pompei they also closed the show with "Run Like Hell"...great performance of course but the light show, especially at the very end...just incredible !!
Its common for live concerts to have sessional artists especially if the studio album had a guest who would be unavailable. The nature of this kind of track usually allows for some variation which the audience doesnt mind, however this sort of vocal is not uncommon in certain operatic scores (which would aslo sometimes have variation). I think the original direction was express this emotion here then this emotion there in time and tune with the music.
Here's the name of the backup vocals: Sam Brown, Claudia Fontaine and Durga Mcbroom! The lead singer is Sam Brown! Stands in the middle!! Gorgeous singer's!!
Recommend Pink Floyd Pompeii live ‘72 song: One of these days. Nick Mason is the drummer that loses a drumstick that fly’s through the air . 2 beats later he has a new one in his hand. 😅
Not Clair Torrey... first up was Sam Brown, next was Durga McBroom, lastly Claudia Fontaine (R.i.P.) who was both a model and a singer. Peace, love and bellbottoms from a long- time Floyd freak in Canada.
Great concert the entire Pulse concert. This song is about accepting death and is dived in three parts during the acceptance. The voices heard was recording of certain random people working in around the studio when recording the album. Don’t forget the to react to the album Final Cut from 1982 that came out after The Wall
Pink Floyd is one of those rare bands that sounds just as good live as they do in the studio! That's a sign of master musicianship and production! Pink Floyds' production was always a step above everyone else att. Clare Torry, who did the studio version, (3 different takes, which PF took parts from all 3 for the final product), of "Great Gig in the Sky" on their "Dark Side of the Moon" album in 1973. She also sang the song live with Pink Floyd a few times in the 80s and 90s. She also performed the song with Roger Waters live a few times. Waters, a founding Pink Floyd member, and bassist from 1964 to1985, when he quit the band. He went on as a solo artist doing his own compositions as well as Pink Floyd compositions, (which were mostly his lyrics for most of those years).
He reminds me of my kid when he was 6 months old and I gave him a taste of ice cream. He looked around confused and a little scared all while giggly. The he got loud and a little angry as he demanded more. Kept looking confused and nervous smiley.
The backing singers are Sam Brown, Claudia Fontaine and Durga McBroom. Sadly, Claudia died in 2018. You've probably heard tracks like Naked in The Rain that Durga sang, and Stop from Sam. We are so lucky to have heard Sam on top form here... It was like a flame that burned brightly but for a short time.. She had vocal problems and has since had to develop other methods to express her musical creativity. Still brilliant!
I saw Pink Floyd in Memorial Stadium, Clemson, SC back in May 1994. It was the Division Bell tour. Single best concert ever. If ever you see the tribute band called Brit Floyd near by I highly recommend you go see them as it will unfortunately, be the closest version of Pink Floyd you’ll see live. I’ve seen them twice now and will be going again. I’m enjoying your reactions. You should try some Genesis. Also great live.
Great reaction! The singers are Sam Brown, then Durga McBroom, then Claudia Fontaine (RIP). This is my favorite version of this song. Hey man, any chance you'd react to some Heart? It's a classic rock band fronted by two sisters, Ann and Nancy Wilson. They're in the hall of fame and Ann is the GOAT of female rock singers
There are different great video's of the full Pulse concert. Make some hours free to watch and give yourself an experience that will stick in your mind forever. Enjoy.
Anything from Pulse is amazing. There is an awesome version of High Hopes - David Gilmour at the Royal Albert Hall. It has an extended acoustic guitar solo at the end that is sublime.
Sam Brown , Durga Mcbroom and Claudia fontaine were the singers .....hope spelling is right .Sam is the daughter of a 50s/60s uk pop singer....called Joe Brown.
Another awesome reaction bro 👌... hoping you will get to " On The Turning Away" live from A Delicate Sound of Thunder concert before you go into other music...theres also a version of this song on their too which imo is alot better...Thanx for the reactions bro. Loving it💯🔥
The first of the three vocalist is Sam Brown, her father was a popular artist in the UK from the 1960's onwards and still performing in his 80's. Sam sung on Pink Floyd's 1994 album 'The division bell' and toured with them the same year for this concert. She was a popular session singer on many famous artists albums and she brought out a string of solo albums. Sadly Sam lost her singing voice in 2007 after developing a cyst on her vocal cords, which have never recovered properly.
Yes none of them are Claire Tory and a lot of the commenters have told you the names of each one of the three! Claire was known by Alan Parsons of the Allen Parsons Project who does a lot of music on his own somewhat similar to Pink Floyd music. He was engineering the Dark Side of the Moon album brilliantly I might add and he knew Claire Tory. The Pink Floyd band members were looking for a vocalist to vocalize over Rick Wright's musical piece for Great Gig in the sky and Alan Parsons suggested her and she did it in just two and a half takes on her own. She started out singing things like ooh baby ooh baby they didn't want that and then she decided on her own to make her voice like another instrument and bang came out with a brilliant piece on her own. She's a 5 ft tall little Irish girl which I think is really cool! A few of the commenters left website to go see the interview with her which I think you would enjoy! The original by Claire was on the spot the three vocalists were trying to sing as close to the original as they could.
Hey Silas, I see you're working your way through Pulse. You really need to hear One Of These Days, High Hopes and Money. Keep up the good work, you're doing a fine job. Continue keeping this music alive for a new generation.
The only version of this song that competes with Clare Torry is the Australian Pink Floyd (tribute band) - the female vocalists absolutely slay this vocal in that version - go check it out.
David Gilmour was playing a lap steel guitar, if you want to see him playing the ass off it, you should react to One of These Days and High Hopes both live Pulse.
If you watch THE GREAT GIG IN THE SKY from 'THE DELICATE SOUND OF THUNDER" tour, there are 3 different ladies singing this part. Claire may be one of them.
you need to watch this live at Abbey Road Studio where Rick Wright applying astronomy donime he's playing his gold Fender Stratocaster and he is not played that song in many many years
Sam Brown is an English musican her dad Joe Brown was also a musician and children’s programme presenter here in England. Fact: Sam Brown (First Lady) had a debilitating chest disease called Asthma, you would never think that. Doesn’t matter what illness you have you can do anything.
You remarked on the different styles of the three singers here. You want to check out the version from Delicate Sound of Thunder, with Rachel Fury, Durga McBroom (again) and then Margaret Taylor. They are even more contrasting. But for me, this is the best version. I could listen to Sam all night. Her precision is amazing.
You should react to the pink Floyd song COMFORTABLY NUMB Live on the PULSE concert DVD, DAVID Gilmore's guitar solo is considered to be the best one ever
Dark Side of the Moon was released in 1973. This concert took place 21 years later in 1994. Obviously Clare would have aged just like the rest of the guys. These are all relatively young women. Is this song about Death?....NO. I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. We could not tell the singer so as to avoid her making any comments that would end up in the media. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The doorman-janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Results are legendary.
I tend to agree. When I listen to the album DSOTM, the two tracks that I miss out are this one and 'Money'. All the others I love, although 'On The Run' is also almost missable to be honest, but it's a bit of a novelty to listen to occasionally. The finale to DSOTM is sensational.
Absolutely NO disrespect to Claire but I like this one better. Pink Floyd concerts are always better than studio. Highly recommend a NON band video with 8 million views on you tube. The 3 stages of death... anger ( why me), denial (not me), acceptance ( it's me). On their way to the great gig in the sky. 😎
After 50 years of listening to this song it still gets me
THIS SONG STILL BRINGS ME TO TEARS
i get goosebumps..
This song is about the raw emotions of transitions into leaving life, stages of dying, anger, fear, resistance and acceptance, extremely powerful indeed.
Sam Brown, Durga McBrooms, and Claudia Fontaine. They are backing up, but they are topshelf vocalists in their own right.
The second vocalist (Durga McBroom) is the lead singer of the group 'Blue Pearl' who had the hit called 'Naked in the rain'
The first female vocalist is Sam Brown. You could check out some stuff from The Delicate Sound of Thunder, the live concert tour that came before this one - personally I think it has a better version of GGITS. Also, fly back in time and see them do Echoes live at Pompeii, you'll love it 😁.

Their all backup singers it been a Floyd show tradition for decades.
It took 3 people to do what Clare Torrey did alone.
