Fantasia & Fugue in C minor BWV 537 (1708?)
arranged by Edward Elgar, Op. 86 for orchestra (1921)
The Fantasia and Fugue in C-minor BWV 537, was originally composed for solo organ in Weimar between 1708 and 1717. The work was later orchestrated by Sir Edward Elgar who had a cordial friendship with Richard Strauss dating back to 1901. They met again in 1920, eager to heal the rift caused by the First World War. At the meeting, Elgar proposed that they should orchestrate this work by Bach. Strauss would orchestrate the Fantasia and Elgar would work on the Fugue. Elgar completed his section in the spring of 1921, but Strauss never kept his part of the agreement. Elgar proceeded to orchestrate the Fantasia as well, and the final combined orchestration was first performed in the 1922 Three Choirs Festival, being held in Gloucester; the rendition was well received.

Maybe I am biased, as an oboist, but scoring the opening Fantasia melody for solo oboe was absolute GENIUS. Always manages to hit me square in the feels!!!!
The context in which this piece was written is important . It was one of the few pieces produced by Elgar after the death of his wife Alice in 1921, and the scoring of the opening with oboes ( rather like analogous passages in the slow movement of the second symphony ) is clearly indicative of the heartbreak which Elgar suffered for years afterwards. One of my favourites, along with the "Handel in D minor" - an orchestration of a Chandos anthem - written at about the same time
Elgar having fun with Bach, brilliantly romantic orchestration.
Makes me glad Strauss didn’t hold up his part of the deal lol.
That fugue sounds likes way more fun to play than it has any right to be for any part of the orchestration! Dope recording too!
LOL I am in the process of uploading another recording of this arrangement. Thanks for the reminder. More to come!
As much as I'm curious to hear what Strauss would have done with the Fantasia, I'm super glad Elgar did his version. It's an orchestration beauty (as is the Fugue!).
This is how a fugue should be orchestrated. Elgar was so good at emphasising the lower line played by violas, cellos or French horns.
Bravo bravo bravo fantastic grandiose genial music super super super
Thank you for this. Have known and loved this transcription for years but have never seen the score. Enlightening!
Magic work!!!!
@ people complaining in the comments about this transcription: is it not enough for a piece to be fun to play? must the audience think to themself "this is the best thing i've ever heard"? who cares if it's not the best! i had a blast playing this, and listening while i wasn't playing!
Oh my God, I LOVE IT !!!! Wonderful job!!
Love this piece. Very Elgarian orchestration.

Who is going to skip such a gorgeous movement?
Cette composition illustre ce qui différencie une musique de l'âme (Bach) de celle du coeur (Elgar ).
Intéressante distinction à développer
Me encantò esta interpretaciòn.

The brahms quartet orcherstrated by Schönberg in your program ? :)
Interesting interpretation. The fugue is very Ludwigian or Mahlerian.

Where are the cannons and the handgranades?
You'll have to settle for canons and retrograde, I'm afraid.
@@sebastian-benedictflore Nice one! Took me a minute, but totally worth it.
I find it amazing that a piece for solo organ can be transcribed to a full orchestra, the organ really is a powerful instrument.

Nice
Well, I've never heard a fugue sound like that before!
