Lets build Dual Exhaust Stacks from scratch and destroy the back pressure myth!

- We are back on the 59 REO Gold Comet Car Hauler project again. Since the majority vote was for the fitment of dual exhaust stacks, that's exactly what I build from scratch, using only basic DIY tools. A Y section or splitter, bends in the 3" pipes, clamps, rubber mounting brackets, heat shields and rain caps, we build all of it right here in my forest workshop.
We also discuss the controversial issue of "back pressure" and I prove that its not something you can change, no matter what you do to the exhaust system!
You don't wanna miss it!😎

I like the patina but the shiny is what the truck wants.
This is the only painted project I have been able to watch you build and that truck is gorgeous.
I don't want to do shiny either. But it's what the truck wants.
She deserves it.
Agreed. Sometimes the patina gets old and a NICE paint job is needed.
Excellent work Div ! If the sound is too much , you can make a set of baffles like a motorcycle and slip them down in the stacks. That worked for me. I like the patina as is on the truck.
Your channel is not a democracy. It is a monarchy. You are the King of your castle. Just do what you want. Don't worry about naysayers.
You really are one of the best metal working teachers on TH-cam. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Merry Christmas to you all.
Leave the cab as it is, it looks great! Thanks for the videos, my wife and I really enjoy them!
I’m 82, love your builds, all the way from Montana. Doing my last build, 1993 Ford F150.
That turned out great! And when you build a bracket, you really build a bracket. Everything looks fantastic.
As for the heat shields, if you’re going to have a decent paint job, I would polish them some. But if you are going to do a patina paint job, then you can leave them rusty.
Great job!
Great job! I especially liked how you figured out how and where to make the pie cuts. As usual, you are a magician with metal and welder.
Thank all that is holy that you shut down that back pressure BS.
Excellent work Div. no worry about back pressure. 50 years of being a mechanic drove a lot of cars with straight pipes ,had no problem whatsoever.
Nice work on the exhaust system Div. I would vote with the bare foot mechanic, shiny heat shields. Take care and have a Lekka one Boet. Merry Christmas
I would clean up the heat shield if it was me.That was a lot of work to put that all together. Great job. 👍 ✌
I think in this case if you are painting the cab, you should polish the heat shield.
Perfect! Excellent! Let Wayne polish the Stainless steel shields. Stainless doesn't rust but ads complimentary character to the yellow. Plus, after polished once choose to not ever polish again. allow it to age out with the yellow paint on wheels and cab.
Excellent builder. I very much enjoyed watching.
Lekka MAN. That is "HIGH QUALITY" forest engineering. Since your painting the cab Diff. I would shine up the stacks. 😊 "Do what makes you happy" 😊It all depends on you. So dream a little bigger, and see what you can do.
Very cool! Baffles would definitely help because you’re going to get tired of loud noise right near your ear, especially with the window down.
I have the same crooked finger. I cut the tenders on top of finger with a knife trimming brisket. Gives us character!!
I really enjoyed this! I learn so much watching your fabrication skills, and you presentation is spot-on. My vote would be for a clean-up of the heat shields; nothing extensive or perfect....
They look and sound great my friend as for the shields ,my vote is O.G.!😊
I asked my mechanic buddy if i had enough back pressure and he says it dont matter unless you got a two stroke . They run an expansion chamber that effects the rpms greatly . Dirt bikes got em . Anyway thanks brother for the video.Have a great New Year!
Great job. Another great video 👍👍
Explained things very well , slip joints would have made exhaust easy but here we are and looks great
I don't want to be a snitch, but I saw three guys skip to the end to hear what it sounded like... I watched the whole thing.. That's some great work! Cheers and merry Christmas from the Shed
snitches get stitches
@@scottcates 😆😆
As always you give a great explanation and theory to the problem that’s why we keep watching! But yeah I think you may find the torque range will change or you may notice a difference at certain rpm so yeah you talked about a few solutions for that problem too! Keep the great videos coming brother 👍😎
Wow Dif! Flippen Amazing I love it!!
Another great episode from RatRods for Africa...
The stacks look 👀 perfect.....👍😎💯🇺🇲
Embrace the rustic charm. The weathered appearance adds character and a unique aesthetic to the piece.
Well done my brother from another mother! Those adjustable wrenches are called Crescent wrenches in the U.S. because the Crescent Tool Company is who developed them just like reciprocating saws are usually called Sawzalls and circular saws are often called Skil saws.
Brilliant stuff Diff . Have a safe and happy Christmas to you , the Boss and all the crew of mates and helpers
Patina patina patina
Awesome work dif
Well done love your mathematic equations
Alan from Australia 👍🏼👍🏼🛠🛠
Hey boet!!! Enjoyed the video as always!! That "kit" you made looks legit, what awesome craftsmanship in the brackets and hangers!! Top notch!! Hope all is well and almost forgot I really enjoyed the math section in getting the sections measured and cut so your pipe transitioned in size, GREAT WORK!!
If youre going to paint the cab, polish the stainless, yes. Excellent work brother, excellent.
Your drawings were really good and easy to understand.
Thank you!
I like your rat rod Africa t-shirt.
well done dude 😉👍
As usual excellent workmanship. Shiney is good. 😊
Nice forest engineering Diff, I loved all the brackets, clamps and the shield. Good to see barefoot Wayne as always. Merry Christmas to you and yours!!
that's some awesome fabrication Diff 👍 . top notch forest engineering 🛠 . yes , the stacks are a bit too high 😁
Likey, Likey ! The pipes look and sound good,, another fine job ❤
Superb tutorial there Div. And yhe start up sounded like a field of merlin engines👍
Awesome craftsmanship as always brother attention to details !!!! You are the king of your shop brother the final nay or yae is yours !!! That's why I enjoy your channel so much you always make your own decisions !!!!! Awesome roar on the Ole gal !!!!! She will be noticed when you take her out to shows !!!!!!! Say hi to everyone and merry Christmas yall !!!! See ya in the next adventure and as always have a lekka one brother !!!!!
Great effort Dif.
My vote for the Patina .
It is your truck, so do as you want.
Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year for 2025
All the best from Down Under Australia
We call these "Weight-saver" because you can now remove the horns and will be heard from a kilometer away! Nice job and thanks for sharing Div.
The crawler board has done more miles than the truck Diff 😂😂 great job buddy and Merry Christmas to you and your good lady 🍻🍷😁🤘🤘
Man Mr D that truck sounds good I like those stacks really good job 👍
Looking awesome Diff I like the patina look😊
Perfection.
I think the exhaust looked amazing s*** you did better then some exhaust shops do. 👍🙏
Really enjoy watching you quite educational nice when there is some theory involved not just a slap bang build man of many talents and knowledge exhausts are great.
Excellent pipework Diff, also I was astonished to see you draw up a really modern piston with short skirt and only two piston rings to explain back pressure, oh and is that the reason you made such high stacks with there being less pressure up there?
Goodness gracious! My new 5g phone doesn't do exhaust! But, it doesn't matter. Love you PS tell the wife I need some beer when the Renault is finished!
Div , that sounded wicked !
Love it I wouldn't change a thing about the exhaust stacks. I would like to see some nice amber color clearance lights on the front of the cab.
If you're painting the cab, let Wayne buff the shield. It will rust up over time. Gotta keep him happy, you he keeps laughing.
I love to watch you build stuff
Those pipes turned out great! I think shinny heat shields with holes cut so you can see the black pipes inside. You don't need a show quality paint job but a nice "workman's" paint job would look great.
Baie mooi werk👏🏻👏🏻
OG all the way keep up the good job div still watching my 7 year old said let the barefoot polish them then let nature took course with rough paint job
I think you should paint only the inside of the engine bay. Pop the hood and walla, sweet engine hidden under an old patina truck, complete with patina heat shields on the stacks. 🤠
And again a nice video, with lots of good tips. Have a merry Christmas.
Very nice.. great work. Merry Christmas from Canada
Awesome morning brother from another country 😂😂😂😂 you should have alot of frequent roller miles built up by the time you get them installed 😂😂😂😂😂
Nice job on the exhaust I wouldn't get too fussy with the paint give her the 1 day prep and paint her the next.
Love those stacks. The flappers must please “dance” up and down on idle.
I'd have to see the paint before polishing it... Your barefoot friend reminds me of every interesting guide in every adventure movie that's worth it's salt! 😁
This show should be called Tricky Diff and the barefoot mechanic.
Another good job Diff 👏
Flow flow and more flow!
Then again like the T💯👍
i believe the "myth"but to each their own. maybe drill a small weep/drain hole at the bottom of the stack? happy holidays and hope your health is still getting better.
Sounds great!
Great and education job again Boet👊
Great job on the exhaust for an O.G.
Nice, it sounds pretty good, needs idling down a bit tho so the flappers clank a bit on idle
Removing a bit of the counterweight side would help with making them tap down during idle.
I got a soft spot for Barefoot, but I love my Ol' GEEZER. Diffy!! What a piece of fabwork (what a piece of rat rod art). Most enjoyable ep, nice way to see out the year. Stay safe need to see many more vids in 2025 Cheers merry xmas gr8 2025 DOWNUNDER FAN!!!
Div, Absolutely love what you've done with your REO. You are a master fabricator. Pie cuts, brackets, stainless heat shields, rain flaps. How does it get any better than that? I'm also an OG but the shields really need polishing. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Diffmiester. Good job Boet. Make the stacks separate just below the shield. To get in and out of shop. Tops of stacks need a shield welding on at flappers. Because you are creating forward pressure with wind when traveling down the road. It needs a deflector. Maybe something arty. Cut a design in the heat shield. Better than holes. But it will create drag . Needs a gusset plate welding to y joint. Lekka job lekka boet. 👍👍✌️🇬🇧☃️
I think there is sufficient patina on the truck, l tend to agree with Wayne a bit of buff on the covers would be fine
Nice job looks great 👍 I love it
Awesome! Merry Christmas bro 👍
Nice exhaust Div!
Sounds awesome
Its inside under a steel roof ... be good to here it under load ... sounds amazing.. definitely drill holes in shields to cool the pipe behind it 👍👍👍👍 superb workmanship as usual
Looking good Diff, happy Christmas 🎄
Great bush engineering
Stacks are awesome, where I live we call the wrench a universal metric you guessed it USA Florida to be exact.
Real nice work Div Merry Christmas Boys
A bit of trivia. The only thing I remember from college ( I was training to be a shop teacher): Crescent is a brand name. We were instructed to call it an "Open End Adjustable Wrench". I enjoy all your videos. Did you make the clamps on your forming roll?
You could add a resonator in the bottom of your four inch stack also, it would increase velocity, be hidden as well as quieting the exhaust somewhat.
Hey, another reason to keep that laundry detergent in the shop. Use it for your bushings! I'm definitely not a diesel, or stack guy. but damn it, if you put lipstick on a pig I'd still watch. Looks good from SF div. Have a happy holiday, and happy new years to you and the family. Can't wait to see what next year brings for Rat Rods for Africa... Maybe a Datsun???? 😂❤
Paint the cab, and polish and drill holes in the exhaust stacks. It will age nicely together.
awesome looking stacks....
Yellow cab black fenders. Shine does'nt matter. Looks and sounds great.
Usually I'm not a fan of exhaust stacks, but the hydraulic controls on our rollback truck are right in front of the tailpipe and the diesel exhaust can choke you out if you're not careful. Stacks would definitely help in that case, but theres no great way to do that in my case.
Team Crooked finger club member here!! 👍😂
I think the exhaust is killer! Leave it old school, this is not a show truck!
I vote for polished. Goes with the door handles, light rings, hubcaps, etc. The rest of the truck looks to good to leave them rusty.
Great job diff
excellent job well done
I think in this case hols and polish The stacks and paint the cab she deserves it.
The only exhaust back pressure I know of is in 2 strokes (which is more of a pulse ) and diesel truck exhaust brakes 🤔
What a lot of work! But what great results. That old Reo sounds about as good as Flytrap ---- which I really like. I would argue with you about your explanation of "back pressure" but I'm afraid it would be too long of an explanation. It has to do with getting the spent gas out of that big cylinder through the little opening around the exhaust valve. Racers "polish and relieve" the ports to allow the spent gases to flow out with less "back pressure" and faster flow.
Sounds good
