Rom hacks can be all over the place in terms of quality, and even content. My favorites, are obviously high quality hacks, but not just because they're more fun. My favorites specifically are:
    1) high quality fan-translations of games that never came out in English. There's a ridiculous amount of good retro-era games that never left Japan. And there's even some floating around as unlicensed games from other various countries that are fun. But you'd never get a chance to play a lot of 'em due to needing to read dialogue, or just would be less fun without the story.
    2) Rom hacks that feel like direct official sequels. Hacks that just alter the level layouts, for example. Maybe adjust graphics here and there. Stuff like Castlevania Blood Moon, Legend of Zelda Outlands, 1942 Cold Winter. Hacks where, if you didn't tell me beforehand, I'd think it was just another officially licensed Nintendo game. Kinda like how the original Japanese Mario 2 (lost levels) was almost entirely the same as the first game, with new levels, adjusted graphics here and there, and a new level hazard or two.
    3) Updates to existing games. This is kind of a catch-all for less-game-changing hacks, but still good and worth having. This section includes colored-hacks for OG Black/White Game Boy games. Adding mechanics like having proper saving and a map in the first Metroid. Enabling locked stuff, like adding the E-Reader levels to Mario 3 on GBA, or enabling 'GBA mode' for the couple GBC games that support the feature. Also some graphics hacks that make a game more enjoyable, like removing the glow around your character in that one Castlevania GBA game, adjusting the SNES GBA ports color palettes, etc.
Honorable mentions are hacks that are gimmicky as hell, but fun because of it. Like the MANY "Sonic 2 as So-and-So character" hacks. The one where you play as Yoshi is super fun, and funny enough Sonic 1 feels like a better game when you play as a slower character like Amy. There's also a Mario World SNES hack that gives you Cappy from Mario Odyssey, and it works.
I don't MIND the less-polished hacks, or the "I'm bored and dicking around" hacks. They're just the kinda thing I'd rather see in a Vinesauce video or something, not stuff I'd actually want to play.

Two thoughts. Dave is talented. Dave also screwed over fellow hackers and makes money off of intellectual property he shouldn't be making money off of. At least he was back when this video originally came out. I haven't been a part of the scene for quite a few years.

@@wardrich Well... they had to be buddies. One of Dave's hacks was The LJN Defender. There's 2 sides to every story. I don't know exactly what happened, but there was a pattern of bad behavior. Can't hate on him too hard though. We got a lot of good game translations from him over the years despite all the drama. That to me is priceless.

@thedude5295 to look at the work without the rest, there was definitely some good stuff that came out of it. I think he's still doing projects, too.

The guy uploading these isn't the dude who made these videos. It's great that he's doing it though. I forgot all about Cygnus Destroyer and hadn't seen him for years. I went to look for his channel and it's gone. I guess he quit a long time ago but just recently his channel disappeared.
