I'm deeply in love with the first portrait, the little girl's face is stunningly adorable! You have what in Italy is called "a beautiful hand" when it comes to doing things such as painting or drawing, sculpting and like. Kudos to you!
ich liebe das Video, wie man ein Porträt zu malen. Ich habe auch mache keine Skizzen, bevor ich mit dem Malen beginnen und deshalb habe ich wirklich genossen haben Ihre video.Chege
I would really love to know the key to "overpainting" light over dark! Whenever I try this I end up with a brown mess. I wonder if some sort of medium is used. Also who is MrPicment ! Does he have any DVD's on sale. He is obviously a very gifted artist and I hope he may share his great skills with others. Really pleased I found his uploads and now subscribe. Great work, please keep posting, many thanks...
I don't think that he did since this is a very fast painting technique. There is a little blending that will naturally happen but if you're applying gradually increasingly thicker paint (using less solvent or medium and more straight paint from the tube) this helps minimize undesirable muddiness. You may notice the tones he used do tend towards brown neutrals for most of the process and this is at least partly because of colors blending on the canvas.
@NowIAmAwake My mom is Belgian but I don´t speak AN. I hope i understand you question correctly. Yes i use terpentine for the underpainting. The underpainting should be a thin layer.
Hi I have question, did you let the first layer dry before painting with the different colors? Wouldn't the brown blend in with all the other colors ? This is the problem I have.
@MrPicment I don't know why I wrote my question in Dutch. Sorry for that. Thank you for your answer. In my lessons traditional techniques sometimes we make an underpainting with acryl, but I prefere your way. Thank you for your inspiring lessons!
Alla prima is wet-on-wet painting so, yes, it is wet at all times. If you're applying paint fat over lean, it shouldn't get muddy---the different consistencies of paint don't mix easily, although there will be a little picking up of color from different areas but this is desirable to a large extent. It helps to unify the painting.
That is amazing! :) I'm mainly a watercolourist and acrylic painter artist, but really keen to learn more on oils. I'm deaf and wondered if you could subtitle this video if ur able to?
Very beautiful but why two portrait at a time ? And it would have been very informative with a short written explanation of choice ofcolors and eventuel medium.
Hi, thanks for the sub :D For those paintings I used a noname sythetic filbert brush. But now I´m only using Eclipse and Mongoose brushes by rosemary and co. Linseed oil is a slow drying medium. I need a quick drying medium like Liquin Original, Liquin Light Gel or terpentine (don´t like the heavy smell of terpentine). No experience with linseed oil :|
@ifuckinghateyoubitch You´re on the right way. I´m sure you can! If you need some good teaching videos look for Portait Painting Duo (Dan Gerhartz and Scott Burdick) or Alla Prima Portaiture (Rose Frentzen). You can download it for 15$ each.
how can one video leave you completely impressed, amazed and cross-eyed all at once?
Magnifique!
راءع واكتر من جميل الفنان المتمكن من ادواته وفهمه واحساسه للظل و النور والزهد فى الالوان شكرا لكم ولكل الفنانين والفنانات التشكلين

Wow - I'm in awe. I am so impressed. Thanks for posting this for us lesser mortals trying to improve!
Awsome demo! Perfect example of how Oil painting is comparable to sculpture.
Thanks for posting.

Maybe using opaque oil color like cadmium yellow, blue etc will help you painting light over dark
Also, you can look up the lists of opaque and transparent oil color to help you
Very nice how you can do two at once…and so fast! 😄😜
Seriously, very nice.
What references do you use. Live models, photos that you've taken? Beautiful work!
awesome demo! what size canvas did you use? great music too!
good painting!
Mooi en leerzaam om te zien.
Ik vraag me af waarmee u de verf voor de onderschildering verdunt. Gebruikt u daarvoor terpentijn of terpentine?
@cybrid1940
As said by Leygoes it´s wet on wet. Alla Prima means that´s a one session painting.
Un réel plaisir des yeux.
How long in real time did this take? Beautiful work!
It´s a composition by Rachmaninov Vocalise op 34 n 14.

The twin portraits are a novel way of retaining attention.
amazing technique - thank you

Did you have models sit for these or were these painted from memory/imagination?
I wish I could see his palette.

@unblesseDK
In this case from photographs but they are not copies. I use them for inspiration. Expessions and colors are imaginary.
@Leygoes
Thank You:)

See, understand and practice that´s the "magic secret".

Don't worry, there's only music in this video.
It's weird. The one on the left is pretty damn good, the right one really sucks.
