  • HOW TO INTRODUCE CULTURE, ART, AND MUSIC TO A TODDLER! See how our multicultural and multilingual Montessori home caters a playroom fit for developing an appreciation of art, music, and other cultures from a young age. We discuss Montessori art space ideas, Montessori art activities, Montessori music and movement, as well as the Montessori approach to cultural studies for a toddler. Regardless of whether you're a multilingual or monolingual home, or whether you incorporate all or none of the Montessori approach, cultivating an appreciation for art, music and culture at a young age is so important for our toddlers.
Our toddlers are in the sensitive period for developing these skills and knowledge. Providing them the space and activities to explore art, music, and culture further will allow them to not only create that deep appreciation from an early age, but ensure that our toddlers have these abilities to rely on as they grow.

Ahahaha the Eiffel Tower like most of my play doh creations😅
I have actually used a book i had on Van Gough but haven't found the time to najee it a matching activity. My fave art i think since i was a child and found the sunflowers and scream. I can't help but share how it makes me feel and what i think of.
I love this video has really inspired me to focus more on this side of activities.
Ahahaha you can tell your hubby is in construction based on the taj mahaal and that he seems to really like the magnatiles lol
I missed out on a lot of this growing up and when we had interest in something in school it ws always controlled to reach a passing grade we might have been able to delve deep into interests in after school classes but never in our busy scheduled school time.
Geography was my faaave subject and have had chances to use some of the language with her lol my 'volcano exploding' whilst creating is so funny to her. I think she understands that some places are faaar away now that we are getting into perspective schema but obviously not completely and that some places are cold and hot some are dry others are wet some have mountains some have desserts. Idk its hard to know when i should introduce these concepts to her but it feels like she is interested in this at the moment like she will ask me to do the 'global activity' (ghobal babies book to thank for that word) its cool i just want her to experience other areas too so will work on setting up more art based activities see if she'll enjoy matching the pics and items.

My poor Eiffel Tower 😅 I'm a painter, not a sculptor 🤪 I do think I'm going to get some modeling clay for us and see if Stella's hands are ready. Everyone is getting frustrated with the lack of buildability of play doh.
Joonyoung's ability to build never stops amazing me. He spends most of the day analyzing data of disease testing machines and troubleshooting them, so I didn't think it was close enough to be a great builder...but I guess an engineer is an engineer 😅

This is wonderful video! I love all the artwork you put on the walls, and moving the instruments was a great idea, it got me thinking that is something I should try out too! Our instruments have been collecting dust recently, I'm thinking they may need to find a new spot to be rediscovered!

I was honestly surprised by how adamant she was that the landmarks be up on her wall, so of course I had to find some beautiful photos for her 😅 The music shelf has definitely been a game changer here!

My goal for the next two months is to work on my son’s cultural studies activities which are non existent right now. Lol I’m Puerto Rican and Dominican ( Spanish speaking) and my husband is African American and Guyanese. It’s super important to us that he learns about our cultures and that of others. I have lots to do. Hahahah.
Loved the items in your storefront. I’m hoping to purchase somethings soon. Do you like the M& D Easel? I have to see where I can setup an art space. Im running out of square footage. Lol

Ahaha start small! We first focused on the cultural decorations and foods and clothes we already had. Some things we didn't even realize could be a cultural teaching opportunity until we looked at our home through her eyes and realized that so many of the everyday items we took for granted are actually pieces of our cultures that we brought into our home!
I was skeptical of the M&D easel for the price vs the much more affordable Ikea one, to be honest. I went with it for the extra large trays they have on both sides and the ability to adjust height. And I'm really glad I did. We love it! It's at the lowest height and she can reach almost to the top, so it's good height for this age and will definitely grow. The tray and storage is great because I didn't want to put yet another shelf for art supplies just yet. The cups we have for paint fit in there perfectly and don't have a chance of falling out. On the side is space to store the pain bottles when she's older but for now it's just space for wet towels when she paints. When we use crayons, there's enough space for all her colors. Same on the chalkboard side-space for lots of chalk and erasers without fear of things constantly rolling off and breaking on the floor. I knew we would do lots of color mixing and mixed media, so it made sense to get something that has the space to store those literally at hand's reach while we work!

Just loved all the videos you have made and so appreciated with all the activities. I have just got the landmark printables cards and loved the art flash cards that you have got from your local museum. Are there any alternatives flash card that you recommand for paintings like the one you introduced? Thank you so much for your videos, there are really inspiring.

Thank you so much!!!! I have found quite similar ones on Amazon as flashcards, and also some books as well. I put them into my art space section on my storefront!

What age did you begin to introduce these things?

Art and music we have been doing from birth, just in sge appropriate activities, of course. The more formal art matching and culture matching activities started around 16 months when she showed a strong interest in matching type activities.
