In short, Istanbul, compared to other cities in Turkey or Central Asia, is very vegan/vegetarian friendly. Ranging from cheap delicious street foods to higher-end restaurants, amongst which you can find Indian, Thai, Lebanese, Chinese, Italian, French, and Japanese cuisines. All in all, it is very diverse gastronomically speaking.
Enough talking now, here are my top 5 favorite vegan street foods in Istanbul, which you can practically find everywhere across the city: (Note that I didn't place them in order)
    00:00 - Crunchy vegan snack
You'd find these literally in every corner of Istanbul, at a cost of 5 TL (Turkish Lira) each. (As of July 2022). Which is about 0.3 Usd. They must be crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. If it's hard, it means it's been sitting on the cart for a long time, and you shouldn't buy it.
    01:17 - Sweet vegan snack
You have basically two types of corn on the cub. The ones boiled in water and the ones grilled on charcoal. I like both but prefer the latter. If you're looking for a rather sweet taste, go for the boiled ones. However, if you're palettes are more into the grilled and wintery taste, go for the grilled ones. Both cost around 15 TL (As of July 2022), which is around 1 Usd.
    02:17 - Meaty vegan snack
This vegan sandwich is one of my favorites. The meaty patty is primarily made of bulgur, red pepper paste, and tomato paste (along with all the special spices that go into it). A dürüm (pita sandwich) costs between 17-20 TL = 1 Usd (As of July 2022). I personally like to drink fermented black carrot juice with it (called şalgam in Turkish) which adds a nice acidic kick to the meat.
    03:52 - Hearty vegan snack
You can't get this snack anywhere in Istanbul, and in my humble opinion, few are the ones that do it correctly. If you are looking for the ultimate kumpir experience, go to "Ortaköy", a region in the European side of Istanbul, known for its "kumpir square", where you'll find most kumpir sellers in one single place! Make sure to tell them that you want it without cheese and butter if you're vegan (as I did in the video). One kumpir cost between 50-60 TL (which is the equivalent of 3-4 Usd). It is a very consistent meal.
    06:18 - Wintery vegan snack
I like it more in winter but it doesn't mean I never consume it in the summertime! It actually helps warm me up and adds this wintery cosy experience to it (with the smell and taste of burned chestnuts if you know what I mean!). 100g of grilled chestnuts (around 10 pieces) cost around 20 TL = 1.2 Usd (As of July 2022).

Careful normally and traditionally Simit are not vegan, toppings of Kumpir (also the Turkish variety of "sour cream" and not only butter and other cheeses you mentioned)

Nonetheless there are vegan simit, nice baklava, places and not to mention that the famous breakfast feasts are also vegan at some spots (it is just always so much😅). Thank you

@@Patrick.Khoury Most simit are vegan. It is composed of flour, salt, yeast, sesame, grape molasses and water. Yeast is a product of fermentation. I do not think the growth medium of yeast contain any animal products. Simit almost never contains butter unless indicated specifically. Butter is very expensive in Turkey.

@@heavenlymilano Oh it makes sense! Never crossed my mind that they use grape molasses tho..there are a few designated shops where they sell the ones with butter and maybe eggs. But yeah as you said, on the streets it's mainly vegan..

Wow I have been learning Turkish for a looonggg time. Basically I started learning 11 years ago but I took a long break... Anyways. A year ago I started learning again, this time for real and it's one of my most favourite languages in the whole world. Even tho I'm from Bulgaria (right above Turkey) I have never visited it. ALSO, I'm vegan, too! I was so glad to learn you're vegan. You don't meet every day somebody who shares the same points of view and the same passion for languages as you. 😅

In Turkey in general yes, but not in Istanbul! Istanbul is a very vegan/vegetarian friendly megalopolis!
