I just test drove one today. The driving experience was actually really nice. Had plenty of pulling power on the highway. I’m not totally turned off from the range, but with 100kw charge speed it absolutely doesn’t make sense as the adventure road-tripping vehicle it's built to be. If they can increase range, 20-30 miles?, and bump charging speed to at least 150kw. And make the price competitive then this car would be seriously, seriously awesome.
And give it a glove box. Is there any reason not to have one? That's just dumb
life begins at about 220 miles of range... but you can get a used Model S for 30k with 220 miles. My issue is they deliberately undershot their own vehicle. They could have made this vehicle at least equal to a Subaru Outback. The Outback has 8.7 inches of clearance. This has 8.3. I get that they were cooperating with Toyota but why ignore the past 40 years of Subaru styling and make one more frumpy utility EV. The only way I can look at it is that this is their first attempt and they thought of this as a learning experience. The one thing that is Subaru about this car is the all wheel drive. Honestly it's pretty cool but I hope they start to do better later.
@@PeterJames143 well guess what. In May, Toyota is releasing a software update that’s going to increase range and is supposed to significantly improve charging speeds. Bjorn Nyland posted an email that he received from Toyota directly. I doubt it’ll be a game changer, but I’m really interested to see what happens.
Subaru also announced that they’re building an EV only factory for Subaru only EVs. That’s a few years away though.
I own the limited version. You can't activate S-pedal because you probably have a higher than 80% charge. Took me a while to figure that out. Just another way of preserving the battery. Subaru prides themselves on durability and longevity so preserving that battery at all costs is a solid move
how many miles till you had to get new tires?
I was surprised about one fact. I drove a loaner which was fully charged without the climate control and in clear weather. The displayed range was 280 miles. What??? Incredibly smooth, quiet and refined drive.. very stable for a SUV. Zero wobble.. very easy to drive. Feels like a regular car. Not a app. Live the 360 view
Hope they can improve range. Though this could work as a daily driver to work and back.
Just saw one today at Chicago auto show, exterior and interior is quite a masterpiece. Want to test drive it
Great video, it makes me want to test drive one myself. When you are driving a 2013 Nissan Leaf (a true daily drive vehicle even new), the Subaru’s range is fantastic!
Subaru owner for some time now. Hoping that one day this one would break the 300 mile range.
Tested one today. I have some issues but one is the most annoying. The front display view is partially blocked by the steering wheel making it very hard to see all information. I hope they will redesign the 2024 model.
or at least give us a landscape and vertical orientation
are the ventilated seats only for the touring model?
thanks for demonstrating that symmetrical all wheel drive system in the sporadic quarter inch of snow in your parking lot... 🙃
Thanks for the review. I have one on order due to arrive in March. It’s nice to see a review of the Solterra that isn’t on a course chosen by Subaru and the usual TH-cam reviewers.
Look at the Ioniq 5…way better car
A good and honest review. Thank you!
This car is the perfect daily commuter to run around and get groceries in. But with those specs at that price, I feel like it doesn't really make sense to change at this point
This review was great! I like it’s format, felt relatable. I do agree with others in the comment section, this car is interesting. However, for the current price people could get a model Y. However it has some genuine luxury features such as the ventilated seats, the rear view mirror camera, because Tesla rear visibility isn’t so great.
Model Y ride quality sucks
Man, if you ever get in an accident expect 6 different pieces needing to be replaced with those weird plastic sidings & the metal siding itself.
Only thing I can’t understand is WHY the piano black interior pieces? I thought toyota learned this mistake when they removed it from the Prius because it was such an issue with fingerprints, scratches, etc… I want to like the solterra but if I wanted a toyota, I’d go buy one. Not interested in a rebadged toyota
Solterra - what the name originally meant for Subaru - Sol = Sun, Terra = Land/ Earth.
Soltera what it means in Spanish - Single woman.
i had my Solterra delivered to me today and the seller explained that you can only activate S mode, as you call it, if the car is at a 90% or less battery charge. it’s maybe it didn’t want to work…
Lift the tray out of the storage under the center armrest for a lot of storage. I'm getting the red touring in around 3 weeks here in the Poconos, PA.
Red is my choice too, helps look it’s best with the huge black cladding. The “charcoal” (or black) would help camouflage it, but I personally need something bright and cheery when two solid weeks of grey clouds hit in Nov, Dec or March. I also like how a brighter color is more viewable, safer. Best wishes for your new RED EV !!Runs what, 1/3 the cost of gas? 1/4th? Next time gas prices spike, you won’t notice much but will notice all the thirsty ones stopped at gas station filling up often. I recall noting that twenty years ago with a diesel VW that averaged nearly 50 mpg’s. Shhh, it’s a feeling of choosing smarter, wiser, with a smug little smirk creeping up the corners of the mouth that cannot be squelched. I hope to swing a red Solterra in several years. Maybe the range will be just 50/60 more by then, I’d like. Mrs and I have had multiple Subarus over the decades. They really go through the snow. I expect they’d tweak the two motor EV to be very good in deep snow as well.
$54k USD for subaru EV? Isnt the audi q4 etron around the same price?
The absolute bottom scraping Etron is $70000. This is the top Subaru Solterra, if you want the top Etron it will set you back $91000.
@@thomaspetersen3220 , I thought i saw another YT channel say $55k in the US and high $60k CAD. Oh well
How was the range in the cold? The range is terrible to begin with for a new EV. Older models have a better range. I have one on order but will probably pass bc I’d rather get another Ioniq 5 which seems like a WAY better car for the price as well as the rebates.
I have an I5…better in all categories…more comfortable and spacious in the interior too!
i pre ordered it but tried it and omg what a disapointment. will stay with our crosstrek and WRX
Message from the future.... You can buy this for $27K one year later with only 10K miles on it due to terrible resale value. At $27K it seems like a reasonable value.
Ordered one in May 2022... still waiting...
Manually adjustable steering wheel? Hmm...
Unfortunately, Subaru has chosen to eliminate people who live on the right side of the road and don't have off-street parking from owning this vehicle. This is because you would have to plug the table into the charging port on the street side where it will be exposed to traffic.
We don't all live in England......Paul
Not very good for a touring car. It takes an hour to charge on a DC supercharger. That means every 200 or fewer miles you have to stop for an hour. If you travel at highway speed like 70 mph you only get about half the range. S pedal is problematic even below 80% charge dispute what other commenters say. Overall a nice car but range and charging rate needs improvement.
I originally reserved the Solterra last February. I'm a Subaru fan and have purchased 5 Subaru's from 1999 - 2020. The Solterra would've been my 6th !!! The recall in June was an embarrassing one !! I have to give Subaru credit for all the features and benefits it offers. The vehicle is great looking inside and out !!! I was totally impressed except for 2 things. First is the driving range (only 222 miles) Second is the rapid charging time (less than an hour -56 minutes) That's too slow for me. The Subaru Solterra driving range and rapid charging time is way out in left field. Some of the major competitors are offering nearly 300 miles and rapid charging in less than 30 minutes. I decided to cancel my reservation and opted for the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited AWD, The Ioniq 5 offers 266 miles of driving range and rapid charging time of 18 minutes. I can.t be charging more often and losing a lot of time. Till Subaru can get their act together on driving range and faster rapid charging time, I might reconsider the Subaru EV !!! I'M VERY SORRY ABOUT GOING TO A COMPETITOR FOR MORE DRIVING RANGE AND FASTER RAPID CHARGING !!!!!!!
Solterra is a beautiful electric car
It is a good car, efficiënt motors, average but use able range, good warranty, snall battery pack not to much weight. It was tested in the Netherlands against the Audi q4 etron, tge Solterra was the far better car.....
Wanted to trade in my 22 wrx for this but the new tax credit law put me off. So the $100k lightning is qualified but these ~50k bz4x/Solterra/ariya etc doesn’t? Lol
I thought my model X was fugly until I saw this
LOL
No, you were right the first time, your model X is fugly.
@@Lhaffinatu it is indeed fugly, but not giant plastic over the fenders fugly
I own one and honestly wish I could give it back. The actual range is terrible. Absolutely terrible. I don’t trust this car to get me to the mountain and back and I only live an hour away. Need to de-fog? 60 miles gone in 10 minutes. Need heat? Even more. It’s for outdoorsy folks who stay within 20 miles of a charger. How outdoorsy is that?
Ioniq 5 way better in all categories
Not in reliability 😂
Maybe not ground clearance
Interesting
My first Subaru EV vehicle!! Great job Ben.
Mileage range sucks!
It's not surprising considering toyota owns a chunk of subaru.
BS your way through a review, 😂
This is a joke.
Prius
Looks more like a Toyota rav-4
Twin sister to the BZ4X from Toyota
my mach e is nicer , faster, more range, more luxury, and the same price
Toyota made subaru branded
