- Japan is filled with so many real life Ghibli inspirations. This beautiful forgotten dam in the countryside of Shikoku Japan makes that list with ease. By far one of the most beautiful spaces I have seen so far, and it all starts... with a drive

Can't be forgotten anymore if you found it Norm
It was worth every dam minute!
23:45 oh I am absolutely smiling. that spot is amazing and those stairs are for sure 10/10.
As a megastructure and history enthusiast, I'd love to know when that dam was built. It consists of a row of small arch dams connected by supporting towers, which is a configuration I had never seen before. Even more intriguing is that instead of being completely solid, the towers route spill water through their insides, which is a very surprising choice considering those towers are holding the pressure of all the water behind the dam. It reminds me of Victorian era dams like the Lake Vyrnwy reservoir in Wales.
I cannot see a waterfall and pools without wanting to dangle my feet in. The drive was also so nice. It's very relaxing to watch someone else navigate country roads, haha.
Great drive, I would sit there for hours watching the water.
The more you post from this trip the more I think I need to hire a personal driver 😂
Wooooooooowwwwwww. Think this might be the most beautiful trip you've taken. The woods. The truck out of nowhere. And that Dam..... I don't ever remember seeing such a pretty dam that just invites you to climb all over the places you're not supposed to climb! Thanks for taking us along on this one!
I can't understate how much this looks like a drive through here in West Virginia. Nothing like a cruise down a nice Country Road to a great fishing hole.
WV is such a beautiful state
Aw his attitude is so refreshing! It's nice to know I'm not the only one getting excited about some stairs in thr forest!
You're definitely not the only one who loves this. I used to do this, but pre internet so it would almost always be by chance
I'm smiling, my friend. Thank you, Norm...
So beautiful, thank you norm
It’s wild how picturesque that dam is, crazy!
And Norm you absolutely are that double rainbow guy freaking out over some stairs but that’s why we love watching you.
Awesome video as always Norm. You always find the most amazing and magnificent places around Japan 🇯🇵 you can feel the history through your travels.
We would 100% look at wet walls with you every chance we get! This was so picturesque! Definitely 10/10 stairs 😊
Thank you for showing me with every video why I love Japan and why I would love to visit.
Got goosebumps the second you pulled up there. The dam and the views are awesome ❤
This should be in an anime if it isn't already, it gives off a mysterious, old and serene vibe. Would be great for a fantasy or magical or historical or slice of life anime/manga/game.
25:33 that’s it, that’s the shot right there. Absolutely stunning!.
Loved the little road trip! And the dam was definitely worth a visit. SUCH a gorgeous place.
I'm adding this to my DND Campaign/World Building! It's too gorgeous to ignore!
This was phenomenal Norm..... Early LOTR vibes with a bit of Ghibli thrown in....
I live for the forest walks and agree that the stairs are a 10/10. I’d love to explore that area myself!!
Stunning place worth the drive thanks for sharing it.
So beautiful! Thanks again for another wonderful highlight to our day and sharing your travels with us!
This is so simple, and yet so beautiful!! Thanks for taking us with you, Norm!! I hope I can visit someday ☺️
YT suggested your abandoned island video (batteries) and it was fascinating, then an old abandoned school one (with the tunnel) and at some point I realized I had watched a previous one with the guy that roasts coffee that is close to the village where someone makes llfe-sized dolls... I had watched those 3 years ago.... So now I am here, after I got curious about what you are doing these days -- and this adventure did not disappoint either. Your enthusiasm and delight in the "small things" along the way is infectious and endearing. :-)
BTW, I traveled in Japan in 1981/82 solo as a woman and it was incredible and very safe.
PS Subscribed 🙂
Round here the drivers heading uphill are usually given right of way. I love these mountain drives, I've moved out of the mountains now and I miss it.
Stunning dam! And love the video!
I miss this types of adventures
amazing drive! I'm certainly not confident with driving this road 😅 so thank you for taking us with you and showing us this beautiful scenery you're so right it's just like a ghibli movie! love all your videos!!
Just so awe inspiring, thank you for sharing
Yay another treat! The drive to the wet wall was cool. The wet wall was beautiful as well, located in a gorgeous area.
Thank you Norm. Also loved drive perspective, it let's us see a bit more of a larger area and your journey. But I can also understand that it will put a strain on your focus.
Absolutely fantastic. Stunning. Has a very medieval castle feel to it. 100% on my list now. Bonus weaving and winding Shikoku driving 💜✌️🐦
What a beautiful find!
Mountain roads in Japan are still my favourite roads of all 😄 always something interesting to find!
What a beautiful place, and no problems with being a bit 'goofy' when you find somewhere like this. Your excitement is infectious (in a good way)!
This is genuinely so beautiful. I wish I could go and just take pictures and film and sit and stare for a while. It makes me miss Japan so incredibly much. One day, I'll be back and I'll be able to explore it for real. Thank you so much for sharing these explorations you go on, it lightens up my day!
This was amazing!!! Thanks for sharing!
Nope, I would also be that guy (well, girl) excited about a dam and stairs and a forest .... thanks for sharing another amazing adventure!!
Always a giant load of joy when Norm uploads ^_^
Love how your GPS has a super cheerful voice. Most Australian ones sound essentially condescending by comparasin!
LOVE IT! It’s like I was just out for a lovely car ride!
I actually enjoyed this video quite a bit. The driving bit was interesting to watch. It made me feel like I was sitting in the truck with you. The view was breath taking and that Dam was gorgeous. Very Ghibli like. Also very serene. I love places like that.
I don't know which I like better the hiking trails or the pleasant drive.
One thing I know is this series of videos makes me want to visit Japan more than I already did, and I didn't think that was even possible. Thanks! Norm.❤😊
Love that dam soooo much!!!! Feels like stepping back in time....amazing and beautiful!! 😊😊😊
Yes Yes Yes, that the dynamics are moving according to your wishes, thank you !!
I love dams. I used to dream about them. That dam is very much dreamworthy.
The area is so beautiful.
Another great excursion into a remote corner of Japan most could never experience, Thank you!
Holy Ghibli damn area!!! Norm, this was a breathtaking drive the views put a smile on my face. Thank you for this adventure. 😊
You are absolutely correct. This was an awesome find. I was in awe during the drive and then blown away when we reached the dam; it was for the most part open to explore; and no people!!! You hit a hundred with this one. Thank you so much!!
This is a pretty unique looking dam in a gorgeous setting. I get the excitement. I’m really digging these little freeform videos you’ve been doing - thanks for sharing!
More to come!
Beautiful drive, beautiful walk around the dam. Made me want to explore.
That's a lovely piece of engineering. I love the spectacular features of Dams, the lakes they cause etc... awesome stuff Norm :)
Nice to see part of the drive this time, it's an interesting change of pace (not just literally). Also interesting is how, while there don't seem to be any facilities nearby, there are still residences tucked away here and there.
The dam itself is one fine piece of architecture and the surroundings are wonderful as well, so I can totally understand your excitement! The multilinguality of the keep out-sign on the top of the dam is quite striking, by the way.
fell asleep and missed the premiere, but wasn't disappointed with the views!
damn norm, you have the luck of the forest spirits in finding these spots!
the dam, feels like it's from the 1920s or earlier. Chihiro could be around the corner on her way to the bath house.....
Oh I am gently enjoying this and smiling... Beautiful place!!!
Glad you enjoyed it
You go to some of the most off the beaten path beautiful places. Thats why I always follow you. Keep it up
Totally worth the drive! Shame that the path on top of the dam was closed, that would have had gorgeous view.
The drive was somewhat terrifying but beautiful. The dam was a great find, and the only reason I can guess of is that the other visitors didn't have half the stamina that you have Norm, or they were repeat visitors, or really scared of snakes. Hence didn't walk the stairs.
What a beautiful location! I love seeing places like this.
My 3 winters in Japan, I had 4km of road to open every morning in a snowcat. Most mornings there was 50Cm - 1m of fresh snow. On the bridges I had 5cm of clearence each side in a 4.8m wide vehicle, with a moderate snowpack I regularily had 1m+ of overhand on one side. Oh 90% of the road no guard rail. The guard rail was normaly under 2m of snow if there was any.
So so so beautiful place and nature..... Take care always norm....
Totally worth it. I must travel those roads someday and find all you show us and more 😁
That's a beautiful place.
This whole video was worth it...the drive-up, and this location 🤩
You said 'hit subscribe' and I was like, 'joke's on you, I already am' and then I looked and I wasn't .... now I am! Love your videos so much! I will be there in a couple years, definitely. I can't wait! あなたのビデオわとてもゆうえきです! ありがとございます! (I hope that was right, I've only just started with Hirigana)
This area was so pretty, that when you asked if we were smiling with you, I actually started to tear up at how beautiful this area was.
Well worth it, awesome looking place!!
I came across this midway. I'm going to go back and watch from the beginning. This is gorgeous. It makes me want to visit Japan even more. BTW, would you please read the signs to let us know what we are looking at? What were those square buildings?
The dam was totally worth it! The drive was awesome, and your enthusiasm is always appreciated! 10/10
Looking forward to it!!!
Started nice and trippy with the car ride, but the dam is pretty dope - reminiscent of the wall from King Kong (2005).
Thanks for the video!
This definitely has those ghibli/anime vibes :)
Reminds me of Mordor smashed with Hobbit grass nature, this is all so wild. Thanks for sharing
Thank you Norm 👍 I think it's well worth the drive. Great video 👍.
Definitely need to go at night and walk the path at the top of the dam.
Maaaaaan this place looks absolutely amazinggggg!!!
Now that's a nice little secluded gem. Love how it's just sequestered away from everything else. Easily one of the coolest looking dams I've seen. Combine that with the great mountain roads and you've really got yourself a fantastic adventure filled with stunning scenery. Actually really surprised nobody was on top of the damn. That view is incredible!
Dam, that was purdy! Seriously want to do a roadtrip throughout Shikoku...
I'm absolutely smiling with you 😊
So beautiful! Thanks for showing this to us. The view from the top was magical. I like how there’s a small shrine at the top of the dam.
The view when you pulled up was just ... so ... dam ... amazing! (Pun fully intended).
And I think the words you were searching for (regarding that drive) were "possibly terrifying". Doing that at night has got to be its own little nightmare. Although - daytime on a motorcycle would be an absolutely adrenaline rush.
Loved it ! BTW, you are not the only one that enjoys dams
. I was at one yesterday near Montréal in Quebec , Canada.
Nice roads, reminds me of initial D anime but I think the speed limit does give you enough time to react or stop when needed. It's a nice relaxing drive compared to driving on the world's busiest highway every day.
I really enjoyed this video it was very calming and reminded me of the mountains of northern Alabama.
The site itself is beautiful but I can't help but be reminded of Dark Gathering when I saw the dam itself. I will not want to be anywhere near this place at night.
Hi Norm, It's a beautiful area at this location. Funny thing when you spoke about the roads in that area. I like in the northeast of Scotland, and most of our roads are like that. The best road is an A route. Most are B and single track, and like you said, when on them, you always meet a speed demon that scares the crap out of you. Keep up the great content.😊
I live in Wales, roads that wide would be dream. And I often meet log trucks and milk trucks on roads much narrower than that. Looks stunning there though.
Now I REALLY want to take that Keep Out path.
Wow the dam is most Impressive beautiful Architecture. I luv it 👍❤️❤️
Well worth the drive.
Every time I watch your videos, I want to go back to Japan. This whole video brought back so many wonderful memories.
Please visit Southern Nagano prefecture someday! I mean VERY south, like almost to Aichi prefecture. It's absolutely stunning down there.
loved it, totally smiling watching this.
loved it. the drive, the mountain roads, forest covered mountains & the almost secret dam. Your mountain adventures are my favourite!
Thats a damn nice dam.
