If I'm not mistaken, this song is about the breakup of ELO...even the album cover shows the split...such a difficult time and yet Jeff Lynne was still able to create songs that years later are as meaningful as they were when I first heard them. Jeff Lynne is a genius and in my opinion, he has not received the recognition he deserves.

I agree. This shows that ELO isn’t just good at making orchestral pop/rock songs but, can make amazing songs from different genres. This is easily the best song on the album.

This is the Electric Light Orchestra's equivalent of the Beatles' "The Long and Winding Road." He helped start the band in the first place to continue where they left off with musical advancement with pop/rock and orchestral, anyway. Plus, he helped to revive George Harrison's career, and they, with Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, and Roy Orbison started the Traveling Wilburys after ELO broke up. Yet, Lynne revived ELO twice, the first one unsuccessfully at the beginning of the 2000s and the second, more successfully in recent years.
A beautiful song, with heart felt lyrics. The album stayed under the radar of many fans, but this song is right up there with the best Jeff Lynne ever wrote. Between 1.06 - 1.15 the song is so so sad, enough to bring tears every time I hear it. And that sax solo near the end is fantastic (and I'm not even a sax fan). The whole thing is a wonderful piece of music.

I am just now discovering this album. I have a strange nostalgia when I hear music from 1986 and I find a lot of my favorites in that year and to find ELO has this album from 86~ Electric Light Orchestra~BALANCE OF POWER! I just keep finding gold!
This is easily in my top 10 Elo songs even though there are so many amazing ones! The sax solo and the outro vocals are what really stand out to me in this song!! Everything is so well placed in ELO songs, both vocally and instrumentally.
I remember watching Donnie Sutherland on a music show in Australia. I think it was Sounds. I think that was the name. So long ago. 1986. He announced ELO are back as a three piece band. Boy did I get excited. Couldn't wait to get the album. I was like a kid in a candy shop. Such memories. Wow !
I saw an interview from early 2000s and Jeff Lynne said that his particular contract with the record label stipulated that he write 3 albums. He didn't say in what space of time but I can only imagine it would've been an unreasonable space of time, considering its a contract with a record label. The music industry has allot of talented fantastic artists, but the record labels burn them out hard and fast, and for that I look upon the artists with appreciation but also sympathy.

If ELO never reformed, Balance of Power would be a great send off for this band. It sounds like a band that’s ready to part ways. But it’s not a breakup out of anger. Just a mutual understanding that it’s time to end. But I’m glad that they eventually did get back together
In 2001, 15 years after 'Balance of Power,' ELO released a new album, 'Zoom.' Jeff Lynne brought ELO back again in 2014 as Jeff Lynne's ELO. They've been touring and have released 2 new albums, 'Alone in the Universe' and 'Out of Nowhere.' I saw them in concert a couple of years-ago. Fantastic concert! and the albums are great, too! Check 'em out, if you have the time.
They never got back together with Jeff. The band actually reformed without Jeff and are still playing to this day with with the members still living. Bev Bevan retired from that project many years ago - Jeff just recently put together a new "official" band with new musicians... Not the same as they don't work with him in the studio.
Yes and no. The original members never reformed the way a lot of fans thought they would. Some have left the world and the few who are still around are doing their own thing. Moving on is a hard thing to do but you do it anyway no matter how much it hurts.

Its weird, i only got this last week on cassette. I had heard that it was the worst elo album hence why it took me so long to hear it, but listening through the album i see that isn't really an insult, being the worst elo album is like being the worst beatle, you're still a bloody beatle!

A beautiful song, with heart felt lyrics. The album stayed under the radar of many fans, but this song is right up there with the best Jeff Lynne ever wrote. Between 1.06 - 1.15 the song is so so sad, enough to bring tears every time I hear it. And that sax solo near the end is fantastic (and I'm not even a sax fan). The whole thing is a wonderful piece of music.

I am just now discovering this album. I have a strange nostalgia when I hear music from 1986 and I find a lot of my favorites in that year and to find ELO has this album from 86~ Electric Light Orchestra~BALANCE OF POWER! I just keep finding gold!

I saw an interview from early 2000s and Jeff Lynne said that his particular contract with the record label stipulated that he write 3 albums. He didn't say in what space of time but I can only imagine it would've been an unreasonable space of time, considering its a contract with a record label. The music industry has allot of talented fantastic artists, but the record labels burn them out hard and fast, and for that I look upon the artists with appreciation but also sympathy.

If ELO never reformed, Balance of Power would be a great send off for this band. It sounds like a band that’s ready to part ways. But it’s not a breakup out of anger. Just a mutual understanding that it’s time to end. But I’m glad that they eventually did get back together
In 2001, 15 years after 'Balance of Power,' ELO released a new album, 'Zoom.' Jeff Lynne brought ELO back again in 2014 as Jeff Lynne's ELO. They've been touring and have released 2 new albums, 'Alone in the Universe' and 'Out of Nowhere.' I saw them in concert a couple of years-ago. Fantastic concert! and the albums are great, too! Check 'em out, if you have the time.
They never got back together with Jeff. The band actually reformed without Jeff and are still playing to this day with with the members still living. Bev Bevan retired from that project many years ago - Jeff just recently put together a new "official" band with new musicians... Not the same as they don't work with him in the studio.

Yes and no. The original members never reformed the way a lot of fans thought they would. Some have left the world and the few who are still around are doing their own thing. Moving on is a hard thing to do but you do it anyway no matter how much it hurts.

Its weird, i only got this last week on cassette. I had heard that it was the worst elo album hence why it took me so long to hear it, but listening through the album i see that isn't really an insult, being the worst elo album is like being the worst beatle, you're still a bloody beatle!
