The peated scotch that turned me into a “Peat-Head” was the Lagavulin 12 from 2017.
Prior to that I used to avoid anything peated.

My first was Ardbeg 10 and I fell in love with it. Originally cut my teeth with bourbon in the whiskey world. However I love all styles of whiskey. Even though peated is not the one I reach for as often as others, I still have several peated whiskeys in my collection when I’m feeling for some smoky goodness

Great video, especially since therep wasn't much editing, that I could tell. Several years ago before starting my whiskey journey, I tasted a sip of some Laphroaig that I was not prepared for. I stayed away from peat until earlier this year when I tried Glenglassaugh Torfa. Oh boy, smoke and salted caramel. So good that I purchased several backups since this expression has been discontinued. Cheers!

I think my preferred scotch would be peated. If I had a choice to reach for a peated or unpeated bottle 8 out of 10 times I would grab the peated bottle.

    Great review you guys!
Laphroaig was my first peated scotch but it was Ardbeg 10 that really got me into it.
I don’t get much iodine on this Lagavulin. I get charred pineapple and sugar dosed rum with that same bitterness you mentioned. I much prefer the Lagavulin 8 to this.

Islay whiskies in particular I find I often spend more time rolling in the glass and nosing than I do actually drinking. I just really enjoy the richness and complexity of the nose, and how it blossoms and changes after pouring.
It's also probably a combination of the whiskey itself opening up and your sense of smell learning to ignore/tone down certain notes.

My very first bottle of peated scotch I purchased was an Islay Port Charlotte Heavy Peat. I really dove in! I got home and the whole room smelled like peat when I opened the bottle. I was so put off by the smell that I was worried I had wasted my money. But…. I must say, it was absolutely beautiful on the sip. I tasted it and it was one of the most beautiful sippers I have ever had. It is now going to be on my shelf as a continuous sipper.

Solid review and the experimental/educational element included in these bro/sis videos is exactly what it should be. Don't worry about low scoring these gems due to where you are in your journey. For me, once I got into the peated scotches some months/years ago, the first 15-20 mins are dedicated to nosing, set it down, sniff, let the brain acclimate with what the nose is telling you and then start with a small sip or two. I would then progress to adding tiny drops of water to a point where I feel the scotch and palate have come to a mutual agreement. This approach gives me what I think I expect out of my drinking experience. I have enjoyed multiple lagavulins over time including a couple of Diageo special releases in the last couple of years.

Another solid video even with being flipped off 😂
Lagavulin 16 was my first peated scotch. It was ok but not great. My second peated was an Octomore and I fell in love with peat.
A great daily is Port Charlotte 10 year.
I decided to slow down buying and passed on this edition as Lagavulin isn’t my favorite it is just a good pour. I think I need to still go get the Lagavulin 8 year so I have all of last year’s releases.
After your review I am so glad I decided to spend a little bit more and bought an Old Line 114 cask strength & a Sagamore Sherry instead of this special release

When I first began drinking Scotch, I primarily enjoyed unpeated Speyside single malts and blended malts like Monkey Shoulder and Orchard House. I couldn't tolerate the peat level in JW Black. However, someone introduced me to Highland Park 12, which has a subtle heather peat. I found it palatable, especially after adding a bit of Drambuie to enhance the heather and honey sweetness. Nowadays, I rarely have a Rusty Nail but have become a fan of peated Scotch. I prefer peat flavors like Highland Park and Ardbeg's bbq flavor or highland style forest floor type peat, even the Campbell "tire fire" style, though I still avoid the iodine/bandaid flavors.

I have found that acclimating yourself to the nose of a heavily peated whisky makes it easier to pick up the other characteristics like sweetness and fruit flavors.
Absolutely no need to be apologetic for voicing your opinion Mary Bridget. The campfire peat flavor in these Offerman bottlings is much more pronounced than the brand's flagship 16-year-old whisky and is a turn off for many Lagavulin fans.
