Great video Alex! I totally agree with you on the paper towel substrates for animals. It's nice too, how your explaining that these work good if you have certain animals, yet some species that need substrate. I can't wait to see more!
Great vid I have a corn snake and your youtube channel taught me everything I needed to no to take care of it thanks for all of your hard work and keap it up
+GoHerping You could always point out all the unnatural things humans do, like drive, fly, use the internet, make a video, or drink liquid out of cans.
Noah's Ark Exotics I strongly disagree, you can take perfect care of your reptile, but if you are using calsi-sand, that reptile will most likely get sick.
Goodness, you need way more subs. You have like some of the best info and editing out there... and a ton of adorable animals :) what do you use to edit?
I agree for snakes. That is the way it was done for a long time. For larger desert lizards, claws can catch on the towel and you will get rips. Bad kitty! Seriously though, I use paper towels at the school where I teach. Easy to keep the snake cage clean at all times.
As Im getting a baby beardie soon, Ive only got a 20 galon tank but will upgrade with sheds. I have a small portion of repticarpet on the left hand corner with their food and water dishes but was wondering if a few layers of newspaper would be OK to fill up the rest of the tank?
Can you put papertowels directly on the heating mat? How do you prevent snake from getting burns from the mat? (I'm not a pet owner, just doing researches)
I use paper towel its great but my bearded dragon keeps trying to eat it is there anything i can do about this i dont have any other sunstrate right now
My baby ball python has been getting the substrate I use stuck in her mouth and I've been having to take it out every day because it just builds up all night so I wanna try using paper towels I was wondering how do I do it so she doesn't get burned by the heating pad that I have under her glass terrarium
TO ANYBODY WHO KNOWS: I would use paper towels/newspaper but I believe corn snakes like to burrow (maybe?) and was wondering if it would be alright to use shredded newspaper. I know that this wouldn't have the all the same effects (like having everything on top of the paper) but it would still be cheaper. I am getting a corn snake within the next week or two, and this is fine being left unanswered. I was just wondering about this a little bit.
Hmm. It could work, I've never tried it. You could try shredding some and ensure isn't not sharp enough to cut the snake, but other than that I don't see why not
Paper towels are used a lot in tanks I bought a backround for my bearded dragon tank to cover the back but he can still see his reflection can I use parer towel to cover the sides or will crickets crawl up it thanks
hey what do you think about bamboo substrate. does it even exist? if yes, the bamboo has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and being actually a grass should have no problem in keeping the moisture inside for a while.
I don't think I've ever seen bamboo substrate! I know a lot of people use actual bamboo in their enclosures but haven't seen an actual substrate made from it
So when it comes to heating the tank with paper towel substrate, should I put the uth underneath the tank or on the side? I just don’t want to risk burning my snake.
Fiona Shepley I’ve heard bad things about aspen due to it impacting bps because it’s so fine. I decided to go with forest floor combined with reptibark instead of paper towels.
Riley Carlson those 2 substrates actually hold alot of humidity which can be good. But bacteria starts to grow and can be harmful. Unless you have alot of money to spend on bedding which is alot. Paper towels or newspaper are so much cheaper and safer. Aspen only would be ingested if the snake ate it with the mouse and a few pieces are ok just put a plastic lid under the snake as it eats so the adorn can't stick. Also if you put a layer or two of paper towel then aspen and have your uth on a thermostat. Your snake may burrow but couldn't be burned since there is a layer of glass and paper towels then bedding.
Just got my boa black paper towel. Tried to feed him out the viv and he just got stressed out and didn’t eat. I needed to get him a substrate with no risk of impaction
my main problem with this is the fact my beardie likes to go crap twice a day, i currently use reptile carpet but is there anything better u would suggest?
bioactive is the best....... you got a cleanup crew that gets rid of waste in a matter of hours, kills off any mites entering the enclosure and in the long run its cheaper. You never have to replace the substrate. So if you have one of two reptiles and your okay with bugs, go for it
paper towels for cane toads because they poop alot(which is oftenly wet)and squish their feces everywhere. also about the unnatural topic animals like leopard geckos and corn snakes are domesticated and do pretty hood on paper towel
So I've seen a lot of big businesses and others saying 2 different things for paper towels and ball pythons, some say it's a terrible thing to do and others say the same as you, what is your say on this?
When my python had mites, I just stacked up extra layers between the pad and the snake so he wouldn't burn himself. So if you're able to create a large enough buffer to where the heater isn't too hot to the touch, it'll be fine.
I just got a load of Dubia roaches. Do you know how many I should feed my 18" Beardie a day? I know you don't have one but I thought you might know about a healthy diet.
All I know is that the insect part of their diet should only make up about half their food. So I'm not sure how many you need to feed them, just ensure it's approximately 50% of that your dragon's eating. Don't know more than that, sorry!
love your videos I'm praying my parents will let me get a ball python. you are one "real" TH-camr that makes very professional content and does his research. I have a relevant question about how you have a custom screensaver in this video. if you could comment, link me to a video or make an off topic tutorial it would be very appreciated. and congrats with the 19k subs
Thank you! I have a 2nd channel with no content yet and I'm going to dedicated it to video and editing stuff th-cam.com/channels/cG3bggbXn3ZJ6kxKn35EPg.html but for the wallpaper, I just edited together the text and colors I wanted into a JPEG, downloaded some free falling bokeh effects from TH-cam or something, overlaid in video editing software and made it into like a 15 second mp4, put the video on fullscreen with windows movie player or VLC player and set it to "loop"
GoHerping thank you so much for replying so quickly it's nice to see some youtubers that aren't stuck up and don't reply. I'll check out your other channel to. it's nice to see someone proving us teens can be mature
I never use paper towels. some paper bedding like the rabbit bedding with baking soda is fine because itl stay dry. paper towels soak up water and stay wet which if left can cause scale rot or even repiratory infections. The "ease" of cleaning is a silly argument because in my previous example it gets wet right away so you'll have to replace it all the time maybe daily. so just buy aspen bedding in the long run it'll save you money and its better for the animal. This is my opinion and experience as not just a non venomous and venomous reptile owner but amphibians, mammals and birds as well for at least 8 years or so now
Great video Alex! I totally agree with you on the paper towel substrates for animals. It's nice too, how your explaining that these work good if you have certain animals, yet some species that need substrate. I can't wait to see more!

Those are all natural.
thank you!! im getting a reptile soon needed this
Yeah, I believe that as long as you give reptiles proper care, you can use the substrate you want
Noah's Ark Exotics I strongly disagree, you can take perfect care of your reptile, but if you are using calsi-sand, that reptile will most likely get sick.
I totally agree with you Alex paper towels are away to go when you have mites and other crazy pericyte great video bro 😊👍🏼

Alright, guess I'm starting with Paper towels.
Literally everything me in my family thinks snakes are disgusting. My grandfather said they are ugly and that they don't have personalities.... smh

GoHerping i just found out that there's something called exo terra bamboo forest floor. would you make a review on bamboo bedding?
How would you keep up humidity using newspaper as a substrate for a ball python in a 20 gallon glass tank?
You have to put oil
Should I buy heating pad or a heat tape for tub? I am thinking of getting my first Ball Python...
I would really only use heat tape if you'll be keeping a lot of animals, it's generally used with rack systems so a heating pad will be easier imo
I know this has nothing to do with the video but how do u sterilize leaves and sticks and stuff
Boil them for a while, and bake them after. Let them cool after each process.
+Drugstore film is the best You could do just one. I prefer both.

static viper1324 try a 25 gallon tub
Can you use cut up paper towels?
Can you use printer paper then?
The guy who gave me my leopard gecko he used paper towel it this tank I switched to carpet but I did use it for a while and she did fine

ik this is like 3 years later, but i prefer paper towels over repticarpet because its harder and takes longer to clean the carpet
to keep it more natural and like it is in the wild it's probably a good idea to keep a few predators in there as well
love u vids

Fiona Shepley but we dont have aspen in our city
Fiona Shepley they only sell a substrate for tarantulas
Fiona Shepley theres no loose substrate in the store just a substrate that holds humid
Good video, I agree that it can be good and stuff, but if the animal is healthy I still think naturalistic setups are the way to go ;)
Yeah, just takes a lot more up-keep and money but it's worth it.
+GoHerping Bioaceive setups require very little up keep but yeah they can be expensive
I agree with the video but the orcas at sea world life span is like 13 years, in the wild they recently found one 100 years old
True, Sea World's an exception just because they don't know what they're doing..

Can I use toilet paper as bedding for my baby selucata Turtel
I've never kept tortoises however I believe most need to be able to burrow so paper isn't a great option
I use paper towel for my baby American toads
Cool, although that might make it a bit harder for them to thermoregulate since toads will often warm up by burrowing into their substrate.
