Whoever edited that commercial was a true god. The timing and organization of each clip was perfect. I can't hear any of those songs without thinking of its place in the commercial.
Great stuff The 90's were incredible for ambient and electronic. I started in about 88 and every week new tracks would come out that were so wonderful. My best setup back then was a Wavestation, Roland sampler, ARP2600 and Jupiter 4. Made so much music with them.
Thanks David. Have to agree, endless quality electronic releases from the 90s - really inspiring to go back & listen to a lot of stuff. Which Roland sampler did you have back then? S-330/550? Isn't it incredible how the simple setups are where we get the most work done?
@@DavidMorley Ace! Actually just snagged an S-750 a few months ago, just haven't had time to mess about with it yet. Have heard nothing but great things about the sound on the 750/770
This style is a huge influence on my own music-probably from seeing the infomercials all the time! Enigma, Enya, Kitaro, Deep Forest, all that stuff is fantastic! Thanks for the tips, I will definitely be working these into my own productions.
I feel a video entirely about these kind of drum loops could be super useful, and as usual, I probably missed the one you already might have made lol, so I’ll go looking lol🎉
@@Thought-Forms That would be nice, and I also think talking about how to program them when you have the sampled drum loop in the sense of Slicing the transients to make a performance of your own would always be a welcomed thing! You pretty nailed it. Really brings back time. It has the vibe of that Enigma song with the French vocal (forgotten the title) One little tiny thing I'm missing the little pitchbends with the shakuhaschi-flute sound. Otherwise great production, such simple tools but hey they do their job! Nice work! 😎
Didn't know the Bitwig sequencer looks this good! Anyway...I've been trying to make this kind of music on and off for a while now, but somehow avoided installing Wavestation in favor of M1&Triton, only to be dissapointed by them for this particular genre. Time to add WS to my active VSTs. Thanks for the tips!
Bitwig is a slick, slick DAW. General navigation is so incredibly smooth and intuitive. Highly recommend giving it a test if you haven't yet. Wavestation is absolutely the one you want for this genre. Have fun!
Watched a lot of your vids recently and bought the korg Triton vst. Subbed by accident of misclick but might as well since you make a lot of classic 90's type songs. I want the cheese of the 90's 🧀
I was trying to figure out the swing to the hats in that sample at 1:10, (I've never been good at swing, though love how it's used in 90s music like this, I wanted to see exactly what subdivisions the hats were landing on), and I noticed there isn't one definite bpm where everything lines up to grid. Multiple measurements I got an average of 95.23bpms, but as low as 95.1bpm and high of 95.44bpm. While that is only a 0.35% difference, I found the discrepancy odd, I would have expected a by-hand playing to be more out of time, and a programmed beat to be more in time, so I don't know what's going on here, regardless, the timing imperfections probably only add to the feel of the swing. // Great tutorial, nailed the sound. That wavestation plugin sounds awesome, I'll have to get it!!
The swing on those hats are legendary. Was trying to recreate it manually at first then just ended up dropping the sample in after 30 minutes of no dice. Want to tinker with it some more & see if I can't recreate. Thanks mate! The Wavestation VST is a MUST! Let me know how you like it once you grab it

Enigma's production for its day was phenomenal. If you haven't already, checkout his album The Screen Behind The Mirror. there's defo some proper cheese on here, but the production for its day and especially the mixdowns are insanely good. not to mention the arranging and sound choices that sounds like it inspired most 90ies console music that matters (Donkey Kong Country for instance)
They really were. Some would argue it was cheesy even back then, but to your point - the mixes were fantastic. Guy is really talented. A few studio videos floating around that were pretty interesting to watch
Valhalla is probably the best you can find in VST form, they did a bang up job for sure - but STILL, that Quadra just has some magic in it...there is nothing like it imo
@@Thought-Forms I start to think bass was not so prominent in this genre. It made space for the imagination or something. It sounds right without a big bass.
Great samplers! I think old gear sounds better. Also limits your choices which I think breeds more creativity than endless possibility in a DAW. A hybrid approach is a good mix of best of both worlds
90s jungle? Yeah. 90s romplers? Yeah. 90s spacious pads? Hell yeah! 90s new age compilations? TOO FAR 😂 Honestly I thought this was pretty cheesy at the time, and haven't changed my mind. Great job recreating Enigma though! The 90s hardware outboard is real attention to detail. I dug out my old ART Multiverb last week and unfortunately it no longer works. Looked at buying another one for a laugh and they go for 70 quid now! WTF. I may have to get it fixed for purely nostalgic reasons, but it's crazy how stuff from the 90s is becoming desirable again.
Believe it or not - there is a level beyond 90s New Age we can go 😃 and we may go there because why not LOL. Cheers mate. The old ART stuff seems to usually go for DIRT cheap, 70 quid does seem a little high. I see a multiverb for $30 USD locally. You should totally snag one for nostalgia. No doubt, all the 90s stuff has been skyrocketing since covid, but it's cooling off a little, and I do think prices are going to slowly drop down across the board....except maybe a JD-990
The adverts for Pure Moods are forever stamped in my head, damn things were on every channel.
