    I liked the versioned filesystem a lot where you had tool.c;1 and after editing it tool.c;2 and so on. I remember "purging" a directory to clean it up only to need an old version a few minutes later ;( Another great tool from our DEC machines that I really miss is VUIT, a GUI design tool for Motif applications.
    On our VMS/VAX terminals we used a text editor called nase, an acronym for "new and sensational editor". I still do not know if it was part of the OS or some commercial 3rd party software.

    Hm, is "set def [directory]" similar to "cd" in Linux/Unix/Windows/DOS?
    I'm also a fan of how Motif looks, it just seems pretty classic IMO.

    1:13 Back when I still used VMS, the login program would enable the option on the terminal read request to uppercase the username. It still looks odd to me to see it echo in lowercase...

    11:20 You are defining a “foreign command”. All the usual commands that DCL knows about are defined in CLD files, which are compiled and loaded as shared libraries. But as a special case, it also checks if the first word on the line is the name of a global symbol (previously defined with two equals signs, as you are doing here); if so, it tries to interpret the value of that symbol as the path of a .EXE file to run, giving it the rest of the command line, with minimal preprocessing, to handle as it sees fit.

      Correction, the value of the symbol should be a dollar sign followed by the path of the executable file.

    To old for COBOL. Wow! That made me seriously feel my age, first job I had after uni was doing maintenance on mainframe MF COBOL systems ha ha

    I know I am *very* late to the party, but thanks for such a clear guide - it helped me to get DECWindows working on my MicroVAX 3100. One difference was I had to add the "-listen tcp" option when starting Xephyr on my Arch linux PC. I'm having a problem with fonts though - I seem to be stuck with one fixed font, and applications, such as DECterm, give errors about not finding fonts. Did you add any fonts to your linux box?

      I was using Slackware at the time which included many fonts, I would take a look at the font packages provided with slackware.

    1:56 You don’t have to type filespecs in uppercase. They’re case-insensitive.

    Are there any games for VAX stuff?

    • @StephensMachineRoom
      @StephensMachineRoom  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes there are games. I don't think there is a system which has no games. Even the pdp1 had games.
