  • I was given a chance to play around in the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited for this test drive. Should I evaluate it on the same criteria as my other reviews? Jump in as I give my personal, UNSCRIPTED review. We'll look at real cargo space, interior ergonomics, fuel economy and take it in the dirt to test the powertrain.
    thanks for watching.

    It is the only 4WD, 4 dr convertible for under $100k that I know of. Grab the wife, the kids, the dog, some gear and you are off... ANYWHERE. Bring it home, wash it off, its roomy and comfortable for a night out. The next day, fold down a back seat or two, toss in surfboards or other gear, take the top down, grab a friend or two, and you are off to the beach. Are there better cars for quiet or comfort or speed? Sure. Any other vehicle that does all that I mentioned? Nope. None. Keep your hard top SUVS... I'll stick with my JK Sahara Unlimited.

      omg yes! The only problem I had with them in the past was not enough horsepower but now with a 3.6 Pentastar, that is not an issue. Easily merges with and keeps up with traffic highway traffic flow. One thing I discovered this winter was you don't even have to put the hard top back on in the fall. I live in Northern Canada and found that my two door was always warm within about 5 to 7 minutes, especially with heated seats. The only remaining issue with the two door is lack of space-not much room to pack stuff if you have passengers in the rear seat. A long distance haul would require you to install a luggage rack on the roof. Other than that, Jeep is awesome!

    • @groberts1980

      +Kailer S Sure, if you realize it's not a smooth a ride as a luxury SUV would be. It's not a BMW or Mercedes. But they're great daily drivers except the gas mileage is on the low side. If you live in the snow they're even better daily's.

    • @DoinThupidThings
      @DoinThupidThings 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kailer S Personal preference I think. I love a truck with a lift kit and aggressive mud tires. But for me it's a Jeep Wrangler all the way. Greg Roberts is right when he says it's not a smooth ride but that's something I don't care about. You should test drive both and go from there

    too much speed in suv was causing rollovers, slow the engines down, now you think theyre too slow.

      Im saying don't expect speed and highway performance from a truck, and if you must have both in one, there's the Porsche Cayenne Turbo, BMW X6M, ..but I love Jeeps despite their cheap build and sketchy handling, Im still debating a JK or Rover LR4.

    • @empowermph

    I had a 2001 Wrangler and now have a 2014 as a daily driver. As long as you realize it's not a Mercedes or other luxury car, there's no problem. I've never complained about the harsh ride. I wish the fuel economy could be better, but other than that the Jeep is a great daily driver.

  • @johnnnewmex
    @johnnnewmex 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think a wrangler makes more sense as a second vehicle for fun, off-road trips, or just when the weather is good and you want to take the top off. But as a primary vehicle, a truck or suv make much more sense. Buy yourself a good car and get this as a pleasure vehicle. But when people use these as daily drivers...well it is just as stupid as using any other work/heavy duty vehicle to carry a gallon of milk. Also the level of 'off road' most people tackle can easily be done in an suv or truck. Whatever you do, be safe. There are pretty of videos on youtube of fools nearly killing themselves while off-roading.

    I have a 2010 Jeep Wrangler Sport (2Dr). The 2013 with its 3.6L engine is better in fuel economy (not by much though) then 3.8L in the 2007-2011 editions. My sport has very firm shocks and I drive around 43 miles a day in Louisiana so I feel every bump on our bumpy roads. That being said, while I complain about my MPG (I am at 19mpg now doing good driving, not going above 60, breaking easy, and coasting some times as I have a manual), I would not give up my jeep as it is a jeep :). I'd have a secondary vehicle though.. like a Fiat or something lol

    I was given an all day test drive on a new Wrangler. I was offered $2000 more than the Kelly Blue Book value for my 2001 Wrangler. I decided to go ahead and take the all day test drive. I bought it back in 45 minutes and told them to give me back my 2001
    Jeep died in 2006. After seeing what the new Wrangler had to offer, I started upgrading my old Jeep Wrangler because it looks like what Jeep/Fiat is offering is junk compared to my 2001.
    I just installed a 4.5 inch SkyJacker suspension lift, stainless bumpers and side steps, new Supertop soft top, axle gearing at 4.11 to 1, new seats, extra headlights and off road lights, 33x12.5 R15 BF Goodrich All Terrains tires, rear disk brake conversion, and a nice 10 meter ham radio. It is way cheaper than a new car payment and I have a much better Jeep.
    For the record, the 4.0 liter in line six is nearly indestructible. There is no way the new V6 could be better. It is kind of sad that I bough my last Jeep at the age of 33, but there is nothing I want from Jeep past the 2006 year.

    Fair assessment Greg. The only people who have a use for a Jeep are people who take them off road. I live in Australia where we get the 2.8 Common Rail Diesel version of the Wrangler. Much better fuel consumption and much better than a petrol for the frequent creek crossings that you can get here in Tasmania.
    There are lots of annoying things about the Wrangler, but at the end of the day it comes down to this. You've got coil springs (not leaf) over solid axles (not independent front suspension). That is THE tried and true recipe for off-road articulation. With the demise of the Land Rover Defender, along with Nissan and Toyota's retreat to IFS for better on-road performance, that leaves you with the Jeep or the Mercedes G-wagon for the pure coil + solid axle set up. The G-wagon is over $100,000 worth of automobile. So -- at least for us non-millionaires -- when it comes to priority for off-road over on-road, the Wrangler is the last man standing. It's made for a purpose and you have to want it for the right reasons.

    Just competed a road trip 1,200 Miles on my JK Sahara. I drove 50mph, 75mph and 85mph and it felt good. No sluggish feelings. There were high winds with some rain but my JK was solid. I saw many road cars, suv's fly past me while i kept 21mpg to 24mpg.
    The Jeep is a cool vehicle with capabilities flair and safety that the suv sleds and car (go carts) don't have. I removed the freedom tops for 200 miles while i listened to the sound of the air and getting 24mpg at 60mph and that is worth more than getting 30mpg inside a bubble of metal and plastic.
    The Jeep also has confidence with its stance of height and safety because you are not sitting so low that an accident will cause most cars to become crushed or squashed at the life essential areas of the vehicle like roof and legs. .
    Most Jeepers will call my JK a non jeep compared to CJ or some jeepers will call my Sahara a prius of the Jeep family compared to the Rubicon or Sport but its my daily driver and I wouldn't trade it for anything. The Sahara is a trim level of what could be compared to car and I've added 800lbs of bumpers, winch, rock sliders and lights. Bottom line is doors don't ding my doors in parking lots they ding their door edges on my bumpers and rock sliders. I get great mileage and i can see over the cars in traffic while jamming out to the radio or the wind with the freedom tops removed.
    If you want a cookie cutter road sled or suv aka wagon with 2 wheel drive then buy a kia a honda or a chevy but if you want options, confidence and feeling of awesome capability on and off road then buy a jeep. Sport ,Rubicon and Sahara are all great so enjoy the feeling and know you will never have the same love for any vehicle ever again.
    I'm not a car lover i'm a jeep lover and its a choice to have options of roads on and off top on or off muddy, snowy rainy or sunny my jeep accepts all and achieves it with coolness and confidence!

      Not discounting the vehicle, it's a sweet off-roader! However, the Jeep safety ratings are sub-par compared to comparable off-roaders... Marginal score (second lowest) from IIHS SIDE crash test (which PASSENGER CARS have been passing since 2006) and granted, it scores high in the moderate overlap from crash, it scores another marginal in the small overlap front, another test which some vehicles have been passing since 2003 (Volvo XC90). So I would not advocate safety...
      Give me standard side airbags for front and rear seats, and improve front crash ratings and I'll buy one in a heartbeat, but until then I'd rather stick with a Subaru Forester.

    The jeep experience (owning a wrangler) is really like skydiving.. it doesn't seem like the greatest idea in the world when you look at it from a distance and have never experienced it yet.. but you just have to take that first leap of faith, and once you do, you'll only want more and more. its hard to really explain to people who haven't taken that leap themselves. 200,000 miles later in my YJ, and it still hasn't gotten boring. The old girl is on her last leg but still just as fun as the day i bought it. A JK will be in my future.

      furk I have the same jeep. color and everything. at first I didn't like what he was saying then after a few min into in it got better. yeah some things are out of place but after watching its like he says its a jeep. they are made more for the off road but mines a daily driver. gas mileage does suck at times but its better then a car that you only get to drive on the road.

      Amen. I live in Canada. I'm sure I don't have to tell you what its like in the winter. Also, protip: Mud tires? BRUTAL on ice. You will slide all over the road. However. When it starts snowing heavy? You will go places nobody else can. We got a 2 foot dump of snow in 2 days here last year, everyone else was stuck in their driveways and I just drove away like it was nothing.

    it's interesting you say that, b/c others are complaining that I shouldn't expect it to be a good daily driver b/c its meant for offroad...So which is it?
    The point you're making here is that "good daily driver" is subjective. Clearly you love your Jeep, and I really liked driving this one...I think you missed the point I was making in this review.

    Sorry dude, but you're way off. I keep these vehicles on average for about 5 days. I use them as my everyday transportation as well as drive them in other suitable situations. I did take the Jeep off road as evidenced in my video, but I can only capture so much when shooting the video myself and I'm not going to trash a vehicle that is going back on the lot when I'm done.

    Wranglers are awesome until the transmission takes nice dump at 50,000 miles.
    Reliability: Awful
    Dependability: You and your mechanic will spend more time together than your significant other
    Safety: Almost certain death in side-impact collision above 45mph
    Comfort: Worse than awful
    Do yourself a favor and buy an FJ Cruiser. Kelly Blue Book best resale value of any car sold in North America, Unbelievably reliably and dependable (c'mon, it's a Toyota), outstanding safety ratings, just as comfortable as any SUV on the market, and just as capable off-road as the Wrangler for 99.9999% of what anyone who owns one actually takes it (soccer moms *cough cough*). The Jeep brand has changed ownership 7 times since 1941, so the only thing original about the brand in the four little letters J.E.E.P. So, if you think you are buying a Jeep for tradition, you are buying a product of a 7-time failure of a brand. Guess how many times Toyota has changed ownership since 1937 when it was founded.... a whopping ZERO.

    • @KnightShadey
      @KnightShadey 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      What a surprise, a Toy driver whining about a Jeep review/video.
      Not surprisingly the Toyota has more issues (dependability? c'mon Toyota has more recalls than all other car makers). From Toyota's infamously bad brakes (yes on the FJ 2007-2012) to faulty FJ seatbelts, plus the recent recall this month for fuel issues that caused 5 FJ fires, there's nothing special about the FJ cruiser. And the FJ notoriously rusts far more than most other off-roaders despite not going anywhere near the same level of hazarads as Jeeps or Rovers.
      The FJ isn't anywhere near as capable off-road even with the Toy TuRD package, Toy drivers just prentend they're the same, while Rover and Jeep drivers know that the Toys belong only on the highway where they suck compared to other on-road SUVs.
      As for a failure, the fact that this is the last year for the FJ as it is dicontinued due to decreasing sales figures (which are a fraction of the Wrangler) show that the FJ was/IS a failure, while the Wrangler increases sales and continues to sell well year after year, which makes it a target for others to want to help buoy their flagging sales by purchasing the brand.

    • @mambac7
      @mambac7 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      KnightShadey I advise you to check vehicle dependability ratings from every source you can. They all say the same thing; Toyota/Lexus continues to make the most dpeendable vehicles in the world. I won't try to argue with you if you think 2+2=9. As for the sales. The FJ Cruiser wasn't supposed to be a high revenue vehicle for Toyota, or a permanant one for that matter. If it was, they would have advertised it like Jeep does with the Wrangler. Toyota recalls vehicles when they see fit, not when they are forced to by law like Chrysler. The gas pedal issues were discovered to be the results of user error, not the fault of Toyota. The seatbelt issues on the FJ Cruisers were the result of the back half-doors being violently slammed thousands of times; not something the averge driver would ever experience, but Toyota demands the highest quality of their products, so they chose to recall them. Meanwhile, Jeep gas tanks are exploding and Chysler tries to sweep the issue under the rug and cover it up for years. Good joke. I will buy American the minute union workers are no longer building them. FJ Cruisers still have the highest resale value of any vehicle on the road in the United States. You can keep your Jeep, your mechanic will appreciate it.

    Sure they are more comfortable and very capable. But adding all the comfort features doesn't make them any cheaper or easier to repair, especially out on the trail miles away from civilization. My YJ is almost 23 years old and still working great. Also very cheap to maintain. What are we going to be saying about the JK's in 20 years? I'm sure the body will outlast the drivetrain but how many owners will be able to afford keeping them going. Or even have the desire to keep them going?

    Don't judge the book by its cover on your title. I was ready to blast this review, being the owner of two 2012's (3.6s, one two door, one four, one manual, one auto-respectively). And, yes, they aren't the best daily drivers, but I was glad to hear you review WHY people love their Jeeps. We take ours off road. We USE our Jeeps. And I'm glad to hear it from someone that gets that it is not a vehicle you get without the compromises. But it's worth it. Thank you!

  • @highdesertutah

    You're review is pretty much right on. Head to head a quad cab pickup blows the WU out of the water. I owned a 1990 Wrangler for 16 years and the shitty mileage, noise, and lack of space made me really wish I would have bought a 4 banger 1990 Toyota pickup. But you buy these Wranglers because the doors/roof come off and because their cool. If you want a reliable practicable daily commute vehicle buy a civic.

  • @michelthebassplayer
    @michelthebassplayer 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    also you're talking about it's small size and short wheelbase. Well again I prefer the even shorter and narrower Wrangler TJ to the big by Jeep standards JK Unlimited (4 doors) version. Off-road where it counts for a Jeep these new machines don't fit nearly as many places as mine does. I even fit in most ATV trails. As for the interior mine is strip down to metal everywhere because it works best that way. So if you want comfort buy an SUV. But If you want off-road buy a Jeep that's what they do.

    I have exactly the same wrangler, even the color is the same. First of all, you don´t buy a Jeep Wrangler to be ergonomic or aerodynamic, the "poor" side lines, is a matter of design, it´s a car made to be rude and with a Safari look, never meant to be pretty or so, that´s one very important thing for me in my wrangler, actually. It´s a Jeep, that´s all and I love everything about it. Except for the backseats, I had to modify them not to be so uncomfortable.
