    Would you use a tube tester to check if any of the tubes are failing before buying new tubes. Do you have to replace all tubes if one goes bad?

    • @bbmade
      @bbmade  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You don’t need to replace all the tubes. If it’s the power tubes, you might want to replace both if one goes bad so they are matched. Basic tube testers can give you a sense of their general strength but won’t tell you if they’re microphonic so it’s good to listen to them. There are higher quality tube testers on the market but they run around a thousand dollars each (preamp and power tubes).

    A Fender Hotrod Deluxe is not supposed to be completely noiseless, am I right ?
    Mine has somewhat of a hum when the guitar is not playing.

      Yes there’s a certain noise floor an amp will have whether you have the guitar turned all the way down or not. If you stop playing but have the guitar volume up the amp will have noise from the pickups coming through and if they are single coils, it can be quite noisy.

      My apologies, but I can’t read your comment and can’t seem to copy/paste it on my phone for a translation.

      Thank you, please, I have a fender hot rod deville 212 but the valves were damaged, I can't find them, the ones on amazon are jj. what are they like? the originals are groove tubes 6L6 and 12AX7. What will I use? Thank you.

      @@leonelvesga5199 6L6GC and 12AX7’s will work. JJ’s are good tubes, people have their opinions or favorites but I have found the JJ’s to be pretty good and not as expensive as other tubes. You could also try a 12AT7 in the first position if you want a little less gain which can help the drive channel a little. Otherwise just get 12AX7’s. It will be helpful to check the bias with the new output tubes. If you don’t work on amplifiers I’d have that checked by a tech.

    Hi mate this was very useful. Just one quick question. Is the 12ax7 valve on it's own classed as the phase inverter? And the two together the pre-amp? I've got a dodgy pre-amp valve in in the far right position, (if your looking at the amp from the back) it needs changing. Would you say it's better to change all three?

    • @bbmade
      @bbmade  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Darren C - Yep. The phase inverter tube is usually next to the power tubes. I wouldn’t necessarily replace all three. I’d do a simple tap test on the tubes with the amp on and see if they’re microphonic. V1 (far right looking from the back) will have the biggest impact on tone. You could swap them around assuming they’re all the same basic preamp tube. Any crackles or cutting in and out could be dirty sockets too. Thanks for the comment.

      @@bbmade thanks very much for that. I gave the valves a tap test and it's V1 as you say that's duff it seems to be making a loud metallic sound compared to the other. It's a new ish amp but I've had this problem a while with I've not used it much recently. I'll definitely swap them around and see if that makes any difference. Cheers again mate

      Darren C - You are welcome. Yes sounds like V1 is microphonic. Put it a new one and tap again and my guess is the problem will be gone.

    Hey, very nice video. In how much time all the power is drained from the capacitors to be safe?

    • @bbmade
      @bbmade  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! It depends on the amp but usually just a minute or so. Some have bleeder circuits built in for safety but no matter what I always check with a meter to be sure there’s no stored power in the filter caps. I wouldn’t recommend anyone mess with them, it isn’t worth the risk in my opinion.

    Which one of the pre amp tubes is v1?

    • @bbmade
      @bbmade  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends on the amp. V1 is the first preamp tube furthest from the power tubes generally speaking. On a Hot Rod Deluxe it is the the furthest to the right if you are looking at the back of the amp.

    Yes now you have to Bias the power tubes I have the same amp I just put a set of tung sol tubes in my amp now bias it

    • @bbmade
      @bbmade  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Petty - I checked the bias, it was good to go. They weren’t new tubes, they came with the amp.

    I have a fender blue deluxe with volume on 10.You hear low volume. What can it be?

    • @bbmade
      @bbmade  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Could be a lot of things. Input jack mounted to the circuit board, bad tube, not sure honestly. Could be a problem in the output section too. Check the cables you are using, see if input jack is loose...recommend bringing it to a shop.

    why are there NO videos showing the process of draining the caps??? so frustrating

    • @bbmade
      @bbmade  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My guess is, no one wants to encourage people to work on high voltages who might not be qualified to do it and therefore, hurt themselves. Some amps have a bleed circuit of sorts,to drain filter caps automatically and others don’t. Even if there is a bleed circuit there might still be residual voltages and, if it has a tube rectifier that wasn’t in the amp during a power up, all of the voltage might be present.
      Ultimately, anyone working on amps assumes the risk and should know their way around and how to do it safely.

      Also, check Psionic Audio on TH-cam. He might have something on that topic.

    I was always told not to get your oily hands all over the tubes.

    • @bbmade
      @bbmade  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scott Head I’ve heard that too but in my personal opinion it doesn’t hurt anything. When I’ve installed tubes using a soft cloth it has made handling the tube more difficult and slippery which increases the likelihood I’ll drop it which could damage the tube. I think it’s an old wives' tale.

  • @bobbyhavoc26262000

    Did you bias it?

    • @bbmade
      @bbmade  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I checked the bias and it was fine. These were the original tubes that came with the amp which were removed for shipping purposes.
