The most old school DAWless setup on Youtube? (NO MIDI)

  • I see a lot of dawless setups on TH-cam, but they're all digital-heavy and sync'd via MIDI connection, which bears the question - is mine the most old school one? Thought I'd use this short jam to explain my setup below ↴
    SYNC:
MIDI wasn't invented until the early 1980s and up until 1983 synthesizers didn't come with MIDI ins and outs, the most common way to sync those machines together was using CV/gate. The TR-808 is no exception, being released in 1982, it only offers two ways of syncing with other machines: DYN sync and trigger outputs. I prefer using the TR-808 as the brain, controlling the other machines via CV/gate (I'll explain why below).
    SEQUENCING:
No midi connections, external sequencers or digital samplers are used in any of my live jams. All the sequences are programmed on the machines’ internal sequencers and the TR-808 is triggering them via trigger outputs. Specifically, the cowbell trig-out controls the Grandmother’s sequencer and arpeggiator (bass) and the accent trig-out controls the Minilogue’s sequence (harmony/melody). You can get a lot more out of both those internal sequencers and arpeggiators this way. For example, by changing the cowbell pattern I can select what notes to play off of the Moog’s sequence or create a pattern out of its arpeggiator (effectively using the arpeggiator as a sequencer). Thanks to the A/B switch of the TR-808 I can also instantly switch all patterns, creating variations on the sequences of all three machines at once.
    GEAR:
All my gear is analog, apart from a couple of pedals I use to process the 808. The drums of the TR-808 are being processed separately, something that you can do with these old X0X Roland boxes or the Behringer clones (but not the boutique Rolands!). The kick is going through an Ibanez Tube Screamer, which acts like a compressor, and the clave/rimshot is going through the TC Electronic Skysurfer reverb for obvious reasons. The cool thing about the Skysurfer is that it can produce 100% wet signal, turning the clave/rimshot into background texture. The rest of the drums are being run through a cheap Danelectro slap echo which, although a crappy guitar pedal, it generates some really cool artefacts on the TR-808 top drums.
The black box next to the 808 is the ART Professional Tube Mic Pre-amp, here used with the Korg Minilogue for warmth and saturation. I find the Minilogue to be a bit thin on its own and need extra oomph to sit well in the mix. The mixer is my Tascam Porta One, which really is a 4-track cassette tape deck, but I use it here as an analog mixer and sometimes as an analog vocal sampler (by popping in cassettes I pre-record) .
As far as the Moog Grandmother is concerned, I really don't do any processing on that, apart from running the signal into the Tascam's preamps. It really is a great machine for bass sounds and more, and I'm in love with the integrated spring reverb even if it is noisy as hell.
    That's all folks!
The use of headphones is highly recommended
