  • Bentonite clay and kaolin clay are both really popular clays in DIY recipes, but they are really different (and bentonite in general is super weird compared to most other clays). See the two clays in action to see how!

    I'm a chemist - your fear of metal and bentonite clay is misplaced. I think if you wet the clay and put more reactive metals in the mixture (like iron, copper, or aluminum) and let it sit for a couple weeks, the metal will become oxidized causing some discoloration of the clay. But this isn't something that occurs rapidly - it takes quite a bit of time. As long as you aren't storing bentonite in a metal container or storing something metal inside your bentonite clay, you won't have enough time for the chemistry to actually occur and have nothing to worry about. If you have a source of information that contradicts this, I'd love to see it. I suspect it is a non-chemist getting worked up over the fact that bentonite is considered a "charged species" or a "negatively charged ion". That just means it is an alkaline salt (kind of like baking soda - the difference being this is an alkaline salt of clay where baking soda is the alkaline salt of carbon dioxide. It doesn't even mean anything relative to its oxidation potential. It just so happens that salts (especially alkaline salts) speed up oxidation reactions with metals and oxygen in the air. In any event, I personally use metal spoons with wet bentonite all the time and it does nothing. Spoons are usually made of stainless steel which is quite resistant to oxidation anyway (if they weren't, your spoons would rust in the dishwasher), so that makes any reactivity even less likely.

      You're totally right! I interviewed a geologist a while after making this video and yup, the common metal + clay fear is bunk (though feel free to scroll through the comments to see people yelling at me for using a metal spoon, ha). I noticed that the bentonite clay reacts much much better when combined with apple cider vinegar. I actually despise using it with water because it just doesn't combine well with water at all. When mixed with vinegar you get a very nice smooth consistency!!

      @HumblebeeAndMe  8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Mixing it with vinegar helps counteract the very basic pH as well :)

      I know you posted this a year ago, but I only realised this about two or three months ago. It's made my hair masks so much easier to make now that I don't have to mix with water, wait 30 minutes, add more water, etc all day. Just one run through with some ACV to blend, then water to consistency, done!
      I've been making this mask for years and this has drastically shortened the time these past few months.

    I live in Utah where a significant amount of the Bentonite Clay is extracted from the earth "Redmond Clay." I purchased 2 jars of the clay a couple of years ago one of the jars I mixed as was directed and one I left in it's powder form.
    My favorite story for the clay is I was curling my hair with a Hot 400 degree curling iron and dropped it, instead of letting it fall I grabbed it by the barrel and was burned quite bad. I was in so much pain first I grabbed some Lavender and drenched the palm of my hand and then I turned to the mixed clay and slathered it on my hand, I wrapped it in Suran wrap and could feel the heat being drawn in to the clay I did this about 5 times when the clay would heat up I just gently wiped it off applied lavender and followed with the clay and within a few hours no more heat but I left the clay on for about 12 hours. When I took it off there was only a slight pink to the burn and within a day or so I was completely healed. I cannot imagine what would have happened to my hand if I had not done this process, it was so badly burned.

      Yes me too, I've got to try the Kaolin, for a mask the Bentonite Clay is really drying, I mixed it with some Charcoal it was too drying caused me some redness that took about a week to go away. If you get a chance go on the Redmond web site they have some pretty good videos about their clay and all the uses they have discovered, plus the clay is super inexpensive there too.

    Hey Marie,
    I am a fan of your videos. I am from India and Bentonite clay, we call it Multani mitti is a star ingredient in our skin care routine. Definitely it's super absorbent and best for oily n acne prone skin. The reason why it looked clumsy in your video is becoz you tried to mix water instantly we usually let it sit with water for a few minutes and it turns into an amazing smooth clay. It doesn't absorb slowly. So though it's super absorbent but the absorption process is slow. It works wonders on oily skin and also works great where atmosphere is humid. Also, though bentonite at is super absorbent it is known to take away the impurities and dirt from the skin and people claim that it doesn't leave ones skin dry.

    For a moment I thought I will learn what kind of clay I have at home, it is in appearance similar to the bentonite one but the texture is more like the kaolin... My family get it from the market and is only know as mud from a close by lake ("Barro de Catemaco"). It is supposed to be green but I see it just plain gray, it is wonderful, I use it as a mask and it takes away all the grease and black heads from my face and all the dark circles and leaves a super soft, fresh and smooth the skin but no idea how else to use it. Well now I know there are many kinds and I must not use mine freely in any DYI recipe. Thanks!!!

    I have a question about bentonite clay - you said it shouldn't touch metal once wet. If I'm adding it to just oils, does that count as wet? Or does it need to be something with H20?
    I want to make a diaper rash butter that contains bentonite, but am not sure how to whip it up? There is no water in the recipe, but obviously there's plenty of oil. Just not sure if that counts as "wet" or not.
    I can't find info on that and thought that your research skills are definitely better than mine, so maybe you'll know?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe

      Kaolin is definitely more gentle than bentonite (and has a much lower pH, which is a good thing-bentonite has a very high pH), but I still find it works really well for face masks. I have pretty average skin (not too oily, not too dry). I tend to prefer kaolin as I love the creamy consistency rather than the clumpy gel-like thing bentonite's got going on :)

      You can, though the traditional combo is bentonite and diluted ACV as bentonite is very basic (much moreso than kaolin), and the addition of an acid helps balance the pH. You may find that much ACV without a basic counter to be far too acidic for your skin, so be careful!

      I use bentonite clay in my shave soap pucks to increase slip, but that is quite a bit different than a balm or clay mask. I’ve been very happy with the results.

    What are the dangers of wearing kaolin clay on your face for long periods of time?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Well, if it was wet (like a mask) and you let it dry for ages it might dry out your skin a bit, but I'd hardly call that dangerous. Just don't snort lines of it and it's pretty darn safe :)

      Nope. I use a lot of clays in my soaps (rarely bentonite, though) and haven't noticed any difference in how long the scent lasts.

      It's hard to say-it could also be something that was in the soap. If you used an essential oil or fragrance oil that could be the problem, or if the base contained SLS that is a fairly common irritating as well 🤔

    I used kaolin clay for my skin balms and I love the consistency!!! BUT now I have another issue that popped up...this clay gives my balms a honey smell. takes away from my essential oils. Don't know if it's a reaction from the kaolin clay and beeswax, but this smells like something a brown bear would rub on his coat! lol!!

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is very odd and I have absolutely no idea why that would happen. I'd probably just embrace it, honestly. You could try other light clays like French green and see if those produce the same results, but I have nothing to recommend and no experience with that happening in clay + beeswax recipes. Huh.

    • @gnomebeard407
      @gnomebeard407 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is what i found out using kaolin clay with beeswax. When I add kaolin clay to raw yellow beeswax I get a strong honey smell, but when I use refined white beeswax I don't get that smell. So odd!

      The clays are drawing the impurities up to the surface. This is good, better out than in. When I only did clay masks once every 2-3 months, I always had a breakout after. Now I do it weekly, I don't. I think this is because I do it regularly, there isn't the build & not much to draw out. When I get a few small spots now & do mask, the next day they are clear. In the past it made them worse, ad I said, probably lots to draw out.

    If your age between 14-28 i recommend you to dont use any acids to remove blackheads (eg Salicylic acid) i think the bentonite clay is best thing to remove blackheads deeply. Dont use blackhead peel off masks because just they dont remove the blackheads deeply they just cleans the the top of blackheads not deeply as you can see after using blackhead peel off mask the blackheads starts to come off from the spots again

      Humblebee & Me Oh, it does! But, it comes very fine and is tan. Quite expensive but worth it. Family owned mine. It’s the only one recommended for internal cleansing by a New York doctor who helped his patient detox lead, because it is clear of lead. Much Bentonite on the market can have lead. I got lead poisoning from using another in my toothpaste!

      I've done quite a lot of research into this and this whole OMG METAL + BENTONITE = BAD! thing is grossly exaggerated and over-applied. For starters, the clay must be wet in order for the charge to be present, AND the metal must have the opposite charge to impact the charge of the clay. If you have a solid scientific source that says otherwise I would love to see it, because all I can find is bloggers parroting the same thing over and over again with no sources.
