    DISCLAIMER: I make these videos to share my own personal methods and techniques for how I make cold process soap. These videos are not intended as tutorials for beginners. These videos are intended for those who already have an understanding of cold process soap making. Cold process soapmaking has many variables and involves working with sodium hydroxide (NaOH, also referred to as lye). Lye and raw soap can damage your eyes and burn your skin. When making soap, you should already know and practice lye safe handling procedures and always wear safety gear. While I hope you find watching my videos helpful or entertaining, so many variables go into making soap and even the smallest change can greatly affect the results; therefore, I am not liable or responsible for your results if you try any of the methods or techniques that I use in my videos.

      Is it possible to make it using a hot process (Crockpot) instead of the cold process? I like the fact that the hot process cooks the lye.

    Middle of a sleepless night, and here I am watching you Holly make another batch of beautiful soap with your beautiful calming voice. I have the ingredients so plan on making this in a few days. I like the idea of lower concentration of salt, and a sprinkle of crystal salt on top. Thank you for all you share with novices like me.

    I made this soap two days ago and not does it smell fantastic, I tested small pieces that broke in one of the cavities and omg! My skin feels soooo good! I used my own blend of essential oils. My only observation is my soap hasn’t hardened fast. I have left it two days now. I think because of the lower salt amount and I didn’t cover or CPOP the soap. I can’t wait until it fully cures. I got a feeling I’m going to love this soap! I like I may try a different water discount to see if they harden faster but other than that, this recipe is perfect for a newbie like me to soap making! I have learned soooo much from you over the past year. Thank you so much for the inspiration and tutorials. I am a huge fan ❤️

      @emeraldrainbow6695 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      philip ma I converted her recipe to a soap box of 269 oz. I wish I could easily tell you an exact amount but you must know the dimensions of the box you are using (length X width X depth, that will give you cubic inches. Then you must multiply that answer by .4 which will give you the total oz for your recipe. You must use “Soap Calc” with her given percentages. There just is no easy way to do it. I desperately wanted help too when I started. I am not trying to brush you off, but it is critical to follow those guidelines. Watch videos, write everything down. Keep them in a folder to refer back to. It will take months to figure it all out. Get beginner books. Try ready made kits from Bramble Berry. Don’t give up on your dream...it will happen. I’m starting my own business now! Best wishes!

    The first time I tried this recipe, the grapefruit EO expanded the entire mix , ruining the the entire batch. The second time, I added a different type of EO and it was wonderful. The third time, I felt like I knew what I was doing and did not review this video before and added sodium lactate one TSP only but that was enough to make all of my bars look terrible, broken and brittle on the edges but soft in the center 😢 🤦🏼‍♀️ so thank you for sharing your knowledge.

    Dear Holly, I made this soap with a very little changes (I had sesame oil instead of avocado), but kept the 12%sf and 50% coconut, also the 33% lye solution. But when I sliced my soap it fully broke to pieces. I had to do with knife because my soapslicer could not make it - I almost broke the string. How can I fix the soap?

      And ofc recalculated after switchin with sesam oil.

    Hi Holly, I was wondering, if you make a double or triple milk soap with liquid milk, does it matter how much of each you put in it? I know you have to subtract it from the lye solution.

    • @hollysoapmaking
      @hollysoapmaking  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A double or triple milk soap sounds wonderful. 😊 I’ve never made one, but I’m sure you could use any amount of each that you like to make up your liquid requirement. I saw a video by Holly of Missouri River Soap here on TH-cam where I believe she used 50% goat milk, 25% coconut milk, and 25% buttermilk.

      Thank you! I did cut them a little thicker than I usually do. I think the bars are about 1.25” thick x 4” tall x 2.5” wide.
      I’m so glad to hear you’re doing well. My hands are super dry, too, from all the washing and sanitizing. Thank goodness for body butter! 😊

    I haven't done a salt bar yet... 12% superfat doesn't create DOS? Thx for an inspiring video.

    • @hollysoapmaking
      @hollysoapmaking  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for watching! I’ve never had any orange spots develop in my salt soaps, but I’m sure it can happen and higher superfat probably increases the chance since there’s more oil to go rancid. So many things can contribute to DOS (storage temperature, humidity, age of the oils, etc) so I try to manage all of those as best I can...and keep my fingers crossed. Haha. 😊

    When you say 12% superfat. Do you mean lye discount? Or do u add the added oil after trace? Sorry a little confuse.

    Is it better to use salt than using dry petals in melt and pour soap?

  • @1lisalopez

    Can you clarify please. You started with 2 tsp clay fir 454g of oil; then changed your clay to 3/4 per 450g.

    • @hollysoapmaking
      @hollysoapmaking  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure! I hydrated 2 teaspoons of clay (just to make sure I'd have enough when I color the soap). When I added it to the soap, I used 3/4 teaspoons of that hydrated clay per 450g of oil in my recipe. I never really know how much clay I'm going to use, so I always hydrate enough for a particular recipe, then I slowly add it until I'm satisfied with the color. I try to include both measurements so you know how much to prepare and how much of that you'll need for the soap. You can also just add the clay dry if you like. I simply hydrate for ease of blending. Hope this helps! 😊

    I loved the recipe. But when i made it, I used argan oil instead of avocado. My soap crumpled a bit. I was able to cut half of my batch perfectly but rest crumbled. Please tell me how should I fix the problem

    When mixing the 1 oz of water with the clay, do you substract that amount from your water total?

    • @hollysoapmaking
      @hollysoapmaking  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, I don't worry about the extra water with the clay since it will evaporate during the cure. However, I do try to use as little water as possible when hydrating the clay. Just enough to make it fluid. 😊

    What lye concentration do you use for this bar? Does it need less water or more bc of the salt? Or less water bc of the water used to hydrate the pink clay? Thank you!

    Hi Holly, how long did you waited before cutting the soap. I did a salt bar and everything crumbled. I waited about 24hrs before cutting and the soap was so hard I couldn’t even cut it with a wire so I used a knife, which did the work but it crumbled it. Do you have any advice on how to prevent this next time.

    • @Soul.7
      @Soul.7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I see that you haven't got a reply, so I am stepping in for you.
      I would suggest that you cut the log sooner than 24hrs, so it doesn't get so hard and dry. I saw a video of a Sea Soap creation recently by Ariane Arsenult, she was making a very large batch (around 4 log moulds). She unmoulded and cut her soap using both her soap slicer and soap cutter, even though the mid section of the soap was in transparent-looking gel phase throughout the centre. But that didn't phase her as she knew what had to be done. Once all cut, she placed them back together, tightly knit for another 24 hours. So as not to break her cutters wires or get crumbling like yourself. If not doing this, I suggest you use a large cavity mould with say 12 bars, whereby no cutting is involved. Lastly you can increase your Superfat number so that a little more of the fat is not sponified - a little excess fat is left out by the lye, making the oil a little more moisturising.
      I hope that this helps you, and also finds you well.x

    Love this soap, Holly! Thanks for the tips. I have some kosher salt I'd like to use, would it be ok to use this in place of the pink salt?

    • @hollysoapmaking

      Thank you! I’ve used fine kosher salt before and the soap turned out great. If it’s a course salt, it might be too rough or scratchy, so I always stick with fine.
