    I imagine myself coming home late, exhausted and then my bed is stuck.

    Can you post a video with explanation so we can replicate the system?

    So this was a project that took a lot of trial and error and the resulting solution was unique to this specific project. In short, the components are a winch sized large enough to handle the load. To slow it down for more control on the bed height, I added a pulley to the mechanism to get 2:1 mechanical advantage and it ends up being 2x as slow (good for this application). The pulleys were regular ceiling-mount and sized for these particular loads (weight of bed/platform, and assuming 2 people) divided by the 4 separate pulleys (I added a lot extra to be safe). I used Stainless Steel wire because I thought it would be the most durable and it wouldn't have any stretch. Something like Dyneema (a low-stretch product) should work well (at least in theory). Yes, the winch is a little noisy, but much less than in the video (I enclosed the area in which the pulley is mounted which helped). The one thing that I don't love is that I wired the winch's kill-switch to go to a sensor that detects when the bed is at the height it should be when stored. That height has very little tolerance and there is no "stretch" or "give" in the system, so if it ever doesn't work for some reason, the winch will probably have enough power to rip something like a pulley out of the ceiling. I plan to try some additional safety-stop options so it isn't relying on one point of failure. I don't think there is any way of getting around that fact that it took MANY hours of trial and error and adjusting/replacing bits and pieces. I don't think it would be reasonably possible to figure out a "standard" that people could use because it will need to change quite a bit for each project (how high being lifted, how much weight, where you can mount the pulley, etc.). Regardless, I used the bed just about every day except in the winter and have no regrets with the time or money invested. I hope this works to inspire people to work on their own project, but is definitely not a how-to.

      I actually want to build this and as soon as possible. Can you list what pulleys and the diameters you used?

    • @jordan879
      @jordan879 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you use 2-1/2” fixed pulleys for the cluster of pulleys, and swivel ones for the outside corner pulleys?

    • @virtualhuck
      @virtualhuck  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jordan879 All the pulleys could be combination wall/ceiling mount 1-1/2" (something like this www.amazon.com/Mounted-Pulley-Ceiling-Single-Zinc-Plated/dp/B08PBW87FB/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=ceiling+mounted+pulley&qid=1672347053&sr=8-3). None of the pulleys needed to swivel. The pulleys at the 4 corners that change the cable from vertical to horizontal are aligned to point at the cluster of pulleys that redirect the cables to the single pull. In short, they are all in fixed locations and don't swivel. Those 4 corner ones are stainless steel because I wasn't sure if they would be exposed and wanted them to look nice (suncorstainless.com/steel-product/surface-mount-blocks/). The other flat ones in a cluster were the same as the link I had above from Amazon.

      If you pause the video right at the first shot, it shows the pulley layout pretty clearly and you can see how the corner pulleys point at the pulley they lead to in the cluster...

      Thanks you just answered my questions and yes I am inspired to make a bed similar to that. I think if the main frame was cut into three sections and secured from the sides instead of the middle, you could also have two of the bedframe pieces and could drop down into an indoor swing also! What do ya think?

    interesting build. I see you started with cord but ended up using SS wire? I'm using 4mm Dyneema and a heavy duty blind motor with a counter balance to reduce the load. Also installing a fall arrestor just in case. What winch did you use?

    • @virtualhuck
      @virtualhuck  ปีที่แล้ว

      I used SS wire for the least amount of stretch possible, but I believe Dyneema would be a good option if you didn't want to use SS (Dyneema has very low stretch).

    try 4 motors

    • @virtualhuck
      @virtualhuck  ปีที่แล้ว

      4 motors get really hard to control within the 1/16" to keep the platform level and reasonably tight to the ceiling. Also, q motor is usually strong enough and the most expensive part. Using 4 may get a bit more pricey as well

    Will it work with a mattress and box springs, plus two people😊? I guess what I wanna know is what is it's load capacity?

    • @macp349
      @macp349 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most platform beds forgo the box spring, there's no need with a sturdy surface for the mattress to rest on
