    Have you watched any of the FEI Dressage World Cup Final replays, yet? If you have, you may be envious of all the talented horses and how expressive their trots are. While some horses are more talented than others, expression in the trot is trained, which means you can teach your horse to have expression and cadence in their trot too!
    In this week’s video, Leo and I will be showing you how to begin to develop expression in your horse’s trot. This video is from the end of a training session with Leo and he is just learning to hold expression in his trot.
    The perfect time to work on developing cadence in the trot is after you have worked on your canter. I like to do my canter work first because it is easier to get your horse on their hind leg in the canter. After the canter work, I really focus on gathering up the walk and getting my horse on the hind leg before I start trotting. Then, when I ask for the trot, I want to feel my horse push off right away in the trot with his hind leg.
    In the trot, I really want to think about my horse being supple and through, especially when I’m working on developing the expression. Lateral work really helps with this, so I like to work on movements like shoulder-in and shoulder-in to half pass.
    Once I feel my horse is in self-carriage and is supple and responsive, I will begin to test asking for a little more forward/lengthening in the trot on a large 20m circle. When asking for more trot, really focus on keeping your horse on their hind leg. Ask for a little more trot, then bring your horse back, then ask for a more energy, and bring them back. Lots of transitions are key!
    It will take time for your horse to gain enough strength to hold expression in their trot, but eventually, they will be able to! Be patient, ask for a little at a time, bring your horse back to a more collected, balanced trot, and build from there as your horse gets stronger. Some horses are more talented than others, but pretty soon your horse will be able to hold expression in their trot just like the talented horses you saw in the World Cup!

    WOW - So fun to watch you two working that trot! "need expression" is something we all see in judges comments. Thanks for fleshing it out so clearly.

    Thank you so much for sharing the “real” part of training! I have a Morgan who will greatly benefit from these exercises!

    Thank you for this video. It is so helpful to see a horse learning and not just horses that are consistent. This is how we learn! MUCH appreciated Amelia!

    You can see that once he starts to get it, there's no longer a hollowness behind the saddle and you can see the engagement from behind. Thanks for showing us the struggles!

    This was really helpful! It was especially helpful that you chose a horse that was not already accomplished / finished in the training. Thank you!

    Thank you for the video, very instructive especially when he breaks into canter which happens to my horse. Plenty for the rider to work on with the aid’s which is where I am at.
    Your videos are great Amelia 😊❤

    I once saw a horse that would gallop so slow that he only moved forward aout 1 to 2 ft at a time. Does anyone know how a horse is taught to do that?

    Laod up the hind leg? Are you putting more weight behind with your body ? ❤ working on this with my horse. 😊

    • @AmeliaNewcombDressage
      @AmeliaNewcombDressage  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, by adding leg in timing with half halts to encourage them to carry weight behind

    Love your videos but is he off on the left hind? There's some unevenness happening in the hip, you especially see it in the left rein work

    • @AmeliaNewcombDressage
      @AmeliaNewcombDressage  ปีที่แล้ว

      No he isn't, but he is weaker. Horses have a strong and a weak side, and it takes time to develop them evenly. If you continue to watch you will see his progression.

    Hi that's a great video My horse Junior is in appendix I'm also on your rider seat position challenge I was wondering when you have time could you please make a video on exactly how to get my horse around up he's not doing it ever since all the rains out here in California he took too much time off and I've been writing them for a month straight and he's having a hard time coming up underneath himself and thus having a hard time for me to get him to cancer He's too much on the front cuz you possibly do that so I can watch it and try to fix my horse

    Amelia, I am a subscriber on both my desktop and my phone and I have another question for you!!! How did you cue this horse to speed up yet stay in a trot? Also, once the trot is subtle and controlled, how can I teach my horse to have a more expressed trot? Need I do this with crop cuing from the ground first? Which cue did you give when leading from a natural trot to the expressed? I do not want to teach her one way and then confuse her so I am waiting for your response. Trot is good but the expression is poor. How can I teach the expression properly and then cue from saddle? Steps would be greatly appreciated so I can ,master each one before checking it off the list. HEEELLLPPP

      @@AmeliaNewcombDressage Thanks Amelia! I watched and while the video was EXTREMELY helpful, is is the steps from ground to saddle teaching that expression I would like to see you do. That expression in one spot was absolutely beautiful on the first horse! Would I train this from the ground first and use the whip to stimulate lifts of each leg first. That is how I am currently doing so but forgive me, what in the world can you do for the back feet with this trot?

      Half halts to engage his hind leg, while adding leg to add power.
