Ottawa Yard Truck 5th Wheel Lift Assy Inspection

- There were multiple complaints of trailer 5th wheel approach plates getting damaged. It was suspected that one of the Yard trucks was doing the damage. I was sent out to investigate and found issues on both Yard Trucks which were just in the shop for a PM Maintenance. This video I made was what I found during the investigation. The guys in the shop thought it would be a great "How To" video on proper inspection of a Yard Truck 5th Wheel Attachment including the mechanic who over looked the issues.

The yard truck at work won’t latch correctly onto king pin intermittently. Locking jaws go around king pin, but won’t hold onto it and the unlatch button won’t engage after extended use
Can someone explain to me why my fifth wheel wont go up and down on my yard goat
How does the manual 5th wheel release work. Our truck currently won't release from a trailer.
As you see there isn't a handle for it. There should be a metal piece that sticks out on the left side to where you can put a 5th wheel hook in it that truckers use. Other than that remove the air cylinder on one side and use a pry bar to open it. If it is stuck on the fat part of the king pin because the trail was too high you are removing the 5th wheel and cutting it off. Been thru that too

Question ..will jaws close if air cylinder leaks?
The air cylinder is only to release the 5th wheel. It will still lock as normal but you may not be able to get it to unlock and that is a horrible situation. Luckily the one that would not unlock for me had a small lever that stuck out where you could put a 5th wheel release extension in it. If you are having issues with it locking that is due to a wore out 5th wheel jaw
