    I've only seen barrels made in the traditional way before. That pulley system and the adjustable hoop sure make the process a heck of a lot easier.

    Many people have asked about fitting the tops and bottoms into the barrel (the 'heads') which did not happen during my visit: a slot is cut inside the barrel, round its whole circumference, near the top and bottom. To fit the 'head' piece, a couple of the steel rings are removed to loosen the staves slightly, and the head is manipulated into the slot. When the rings are hammered back down it tightens the barrel staves and the head piece is firmly squeezed into the slot. I hope you enjoy the film :) th-cam.com/video/BReofCcAx-Y/w-d-xo.html

      Thanks Al. Yes, as I have said elsewhere, there are some stages that just were not happening during my short and unplanned visit, but I hope 90% of the process is there and explained clearly enough - and is helpful :)

    To make one misunderstanding clear: I guess the author heard "collège" in its Burgundy context and translate it in "College" in a US context...
    in most cases you are in a collège (or Lycée) from 14y to 17/18 y old and then choose your track. and yes it can take 3 years to become a skilled professionnal (at 20/21) when you didn't choose to become a professionnal at 16 but even then 6 years to become a highly skilled professionnal.

    using gas flames to soften the oak staves , how does that affect the final flavour of the wine , as oppose to using oaks chips fire.

    • @winepagesTV
      @winepagesTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Stephen, well the flame is doing the work: charring the barrels to a greater or lesser extent as required by the cooper or the customer who has placed the order: the charring can be done with any flame really, as it is the charring of the barrel itself that gives the level of "toast". Using toasted oak chips, or steel tanks lined inside with toasted oak staves, is a cheaper alternative to using barrels.

    • @winepagesTV
      @winepagesTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heating softens the wood so it can be bent, but also charring the inside of the barrel contributes to the 'smoky' aroma and flavour. The barrels will last for decades, but after the first half dozen uses won't really impart any aroma or flavour.

    • @winepagesTV
      @winepagesTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That all depends on the level of 'toast' the barrel maker wants, and the winery who buys the barrels wants: heavily charred barrels impart more of a charry, toast and coffee character to the wine.

    • @jenbow88
      @jenbow88 ปีที่แล้ว

      Originally the purpose of the barrels was to both ferment and store the wine. These days wine is typically fermented in huge stainless steel fermentation tanks, then transferred to barrels to age. Aging both mellows the wine and allows more complex flavors to develop. The reason for using oak is that the wood imparts various flavors to the wine that are considered desirable.

    This is not cooperage, but assembly. All the staves are machined, the bands self tightening, and the rammed home by a machine. Even a machine puts all the staves together and the base groove cut by a programmed lathe, as will the bottom be. So the skill it takes three years at collage and three years in apprenticeship to learn is how to light a fire in a barrel. It reflects the modern process of making supermarket vinegar....sorry, ‘wine’.

      There is a traditional Australian cooper that does a video showing how to make a bucket. He shows how to taper the rings. Barrels are bigger but the same process. although modern they probably use cold roll rather than a hammer.

    Would be good to show how long the toasting takes, at what temperature and why?

    • @DH-xw6jp
      @DH-xw6jp 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Toasting does two things.
      Heats up the wood to make it more flexible for bending the staves into a barrel, and starts to caramelize the wood sugars to add flavor to the wine.
      (Toasting and charring are two different steps)

    It was not shown how the ends are installed after the cutting operation. I suppose some things are kept secret for the sake of the trade.

      Hi Frank, not a secret, just something that wasn't happening during my visit. If you read my description of the video just below it on TH-cam you will see that I describe the process for installing the head pieces in some detail which I hope makes up for not being able to film it.

    How many years is a barrel used?
    How much is a 250 liter barrel price?

    • @winepagesTV
      @winepagesTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Devrim, barrels can last many, many years, but each year give the wine less and less aroma and flavour from the oak. Barrels are expensive, somewhere around 700 - 800 euros each.

    How do you decide where to drill the bung?

    • @winepagesTV
      @winepagesTV  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jim, the bung is always in the centre of the barrel, so I guess you choose one of the broader and thicker staves, so the barrel structure won't be weakend too much by the hole.

    Would like to learn how the ends are installed.

    • @NathanNostaw
      @NathanNostaw 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim Pursley the temporary bands are removed, which allows the staves to spread open, allowing the ends to be fitted into the grooves. Then the final bands are fitted, closing the staves around the ends.

    question - once a barrel is used, and a hole is made in it, how can one close the hole again? or does every barrel is one use only?

    • @winepagesTV
      @winepagesTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The barrel has a hole drilled in the side and a 'bung' - like a big rubber stopper - is used to open and close the hole.

    • @nikimilky
      @nikimilky 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@winepagesTV can you reuse the bung and fill the barrel with wine again once it is all used?

    • @winepagesTV
      @winepagesTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nikimilky Yes, absolutely. Barrels can be re-used many times, and a lot of winemakers prefer barrels that have been used 1 to 3 times before instead of new barrels, as they don't give such a strong 'oaky' character to the wine.

    In my country they use boiling for softening the wood using direct fire is considered primitive because the wood catches smoke taste, and more fuel is wasted for the fire. This is not very efficient.
