This ws the first record I ever bought, a 45rpm single second hand from Beano's in about 1982. Just a random treasure amongst all the New Wave, Punk, Ska, NWOBM, Soul, Disco, Reggae and early synthpop and Goth that was going on in the UK at the time.
There was a period toward the end of the 70's and the very early 80's when there was a rather innovative and fresh sounding variety of popular music became evident. M and Pop Muzik was just one example. I guess The Buggles and Video Killed The Radio Star was another, along with New Musik and Living By Numbers/This World Of Water. An early style of synthpop that led to the more obvious incarnation as the 80's got going.
M as he called himself for this solo project was a member of the band Devo. This was his one hit wonder but Devo had a large catalog but few mainstream hits. The obvious one being Whip it.
M is awesome. The song came out in 1979 and quickly became a worldwide hit. It hit number 1 here in the states. Robin Scott is M. He came out of the mid 70s punk rock Era and fused a lot of his music into a creative sound based on a spectrum of worldwide styles and influences. He was considered new wave. M and his song Pop Muzik really opened up the new wave lane because the song was radio friendly. Pop Muzik may have been one of the first new wave songs to hit number one on Billboard in 1979. Few new wave bands made a number 1 hit in the latest 1970s.
It's impossible not to be happy when listening to this song.
That song was very popular by the group M.

I was surprised I didn't know this, but it seems you've made a mistake. This is an English act, Robin Scott.
